I have been curious about infrared photography but converting a whole camera was too much of a permenant conversion to take the internal filter out. But after playing around with it, I did produce some very nice images with my nikon d80. A note for people trying this setup in mind: get the ISO as low as possible and use a custom white balance. Overall a very affordable way to infrared photography.

I recently bought this filter thinking I would get those amazing pictures you see of IR photographs.I was unaware that my Nikon D5000 was not as sensitive to IR as some other cameras. I have to use long exposers of up to 30 seconds even on bright days. Which I dont like because it blurs the clouds. Also with my camera not being as sensitive as other cameras I dont get great detail and contrast. Also with the blur of clouds it hard to match up a color picture and IR. I would not recomend this or any IR filter unless you have a camera with a high enough sensitivity to IR light.

Comments about Hoya 52mm RM72 Infrared Glass Filter:

The RM72 is a must for black and white infrared photography. I have tried lighter red filters that do well enough with foliage, but hardly affect the color of the sky. I wanted a dark, almost black sky and this delivers. This filter requires use of a tripod and use of manual focus capable lenses. You must also focus your lens before attaching the filter as it is virtually impossible to see thru.

I wasnt sure I wanted to go down this path, but this filter is a great start for infrared pics. It leaves a red tint to it, but it works great. You have to use very slow shutter speeds and have bright lights reflecting off greens.

Comments about Hoya 52mm RM72 Infrared Glass Filter:

My first infrared filter for a digital camera. A baby step. I could have spent more on a longer wavelength filter, but this one seemed like a great comprimise.

I have a Nikon D300, but for infrared I largely use Nikkor-A lenses (Non-CPU - from my F body). The filter and camera work as advertised!

Will probably resurrect the F body and try the filter with it (just for chagrins..). Kodak used to make an infrared sensitive Ektachrome. It will be interesting to see how "Normal" film reacts. Sensitometry in that range is usually pretty weak.
