These are made of some nice thick plastic. In my reels, a lot of the ball bearings appeared a little stuck from the manufacturing process, but after moving them, they loosened up and work perfectly. The action is smooth and works well. These are easy to load and there is a something in the spiral so that it holds onto the Paterson center column securely so you can spin them by turning the center column.

question
Can I use these in my steel tanks? I have some old Kindermann and nameless steel spool tanks. The steel spools are frustration devices that are designed to torture hapless photographers. Can these plastic reels be used in my steel tanks?.
The plastic reels are 3 and 5/16 inches in diameter, and They don't fit my steel tanks. But if yours are larger, why not? I had the same problem with steel reels until I took the plunge and got a Hewes reel, which works great...if a little pricey.
