These lights deliver very well for the price. It's hard to have anything bad to say about such an affordable product. However, they have a glass jaw.
The wires leading out the base of the light are exposed to a metal surface. This metal heats up, and eventually will melt away the wire's insulation. This happened to me, leading to a very startling short out, and a busted light. They're grounded, so I don't think I was in danger. Still, minus one star for not pursuing an inexpensive fix to this significant problem. Short circuits are serious business.

It works okay, I'm mostly happy. One complaint is one of the switches failed after a couple of dozen uses. Maybe just bad luck. Also, same unit had the metal ring that the bulb screws into break off, rendering it useless to me. Those rings on all 3 units ( I bought 2 originally and one to replace the bad one) seem kind of stiff to screw the bulbs into and I have to be careful not to stress the ring too much. I tried lubing the new one slightly with a thin film of high temp oil and that worked great. All in all, I'd probably look for something a little better next time.

Comments about Impact Porcelain Socket with Umbrella Mount (500W):
A basic light socket, nothing fancy. The quality of construction is more than satisfactory for the price. I put a 105 watt CFL in one of these for a soft, cheap, bright area light.

Comments about Impact Porcelain Socket with Umbrella Mount (500W):
I bought a few of these to replace some hardware store work lights. These cost a few bucks more than the work lights but are well worth it.
The ceramic sockets will take brighter bulbs, the wooden handles allow you to move them even while on, and hopefully the in-line switches will be more reliable.
Note that the mount for the lights is a screw thread. Nice for putting on a tripod, can't put them on a regular light stand though. (The impact light stand does have threads though)
I've only had the lights out on one shoot, but no complaints so far.

Needless to run an essay over here, it works just fine. Better built and looking than my DIY version.
And for it's price, it's a must. I plug in two 350W bulb lights, and doesn't seem to hesitate on doing its job.

Comments about Impact Porcelain Socket with Umbrella Mount (500W):
Combine this with a 500W bulb, and you've got a huge amount of light for the money.
If you're (really) careful, you can put this in one of the larger china-lanterns, for some beautiful soft light that's cheap/easy/small/light.
The mount is not as heavy-duty as the the ones you'll find on professional fixtures, but it don't feel like it's going to break either.
Comments about Impact Porcelain Socket with Umbrella Mount (500W):
Does what it needs to, holds a bulb and carries electricity!

I like the wooden handles that keep the heat from your hands while positioning them during shooting, and the porcelain sockets are built to last. I would have liked the inline switch better if it were nearer the handle but all in all I am glad I got them.

This is part of a good, basic light system. That said, this was a replacement for the first one [...] Once it's set up, I think it's less likely to break. Time will tell.

Cheap, practical, effective. That's what I wanted, and that's what I got. It's all the bare bones you need and nothing else. The wood handle doesn't overheat, and my reflector attaches firmly.

Comments about Impact Porcelain Socket with Umbrella Mount (500W):
I had to shoot some interviews for a documentary and buying this along with a few other items (stands, daylight bulbs, other reflectors) was about as expensive as renting an Arri kit for a few days. And I still have it for future shoots. Not a great bit of equipment, but does the job in a pinch. The locking mechanism on the sockets is kind of awkward.

Comments about Impact Porcelain Socket with Umbrella Mount (500W):
I use several of these sockets for low-budget videography. They are surprisingly powerful and work well for shooting indoors, especially in tight spaces. The reflectors (which are a must) screw on easily as well.
My one complaint is that many bulbs are too large for the smallest reflectors, which should be longer.
Overall a fantastic, modestly priced product!

I purchased this to convert a Westcott 28" softbox which I use with a speedlight for photo portraits. This device allows me to use the same softbox to create a soft, continuous light for video interviews using a 100 watt fluorescent bulb.

Easy to use on stand on in hand. However, attachment to stand isn't intuitive to a newbie.
