I purchased this kit so that I could have some kind of lighting for my cinema 101 project since the community college I attend has nothing in the way of lighting gear for students to check out. In addition to my shoot, the kit ended up being set up and struck about ten times in the last two weeks for three of my classmates shoots, I was using black wrap to control the light ( be careful to allow top ventilation if you do this, as the plastic retaining ring in the socket may melt).
After all this (including a few spills) the kit is still operable, though I've had to do some minor repair on one of the sockets. The stands have proven to be sturdy considering all the handling abuse they've taken. The kit has great versatility, providing a key (spotted with black wrap) a fill (bouncing with a reflector board) and a kicker/backlight (using the boom to get near the ground). The case provided with the kit holds everything nicely, with a little wiggle room to stuff some extension cords and a roll of black wrap inside.
For the price of the kit, there is really not much to complain about it. Though the set up is in general a bit flimsy and fragile, you still get more than your moneys worth. If the kit could be improved upon without raising the price, I would suggest weighting the stands legs and replacing all plastic hardware with aluminum or steel. All things considered the price is really the strong point of the whole kit.
If your a wanna-be cinematographer I highly recommend this kit. You'll be able to grasp lighing theory in a hands on way and practice without going into serious debt.

Simply do not buy this product! I have never written a review ever on B&H, but I have never come across a product this bad in all my audio and photo purchasing life. Unless you like being struck with pangs of frustration, then you should find a better quality lighting kit. Let me take you through my experience. It is true what the other reviewers say about this being somewhat confusing to assemble. But sometimes you have to just use your brain a little more. After assembly I plugged them in to receive their warm glow. . . Then the light switch doesn't work. . . then a bulb blows after I "gently" move the stand (the bulbs are poor too) . . . then I go to turn the remaining two lights off and one won't turn off and the other has a mind of its own and turns itself on and off at will. . . I had replacement sockets sent, which were supposed to have working switches; well they didn't even turn on at all. At least the original sockets worked for a little bit. . . So after receiving my replacement - replacement sockets I thought "well things are going to be better now, I'll just hang on to these instead of getting a real lighting kit." Well the new replacements pretty much do the same thing. Think to yourself, what do you want most out of a product? At least what do you want at the most basic level? I don't want the equipment to become an obstacle to my original goal. . . which was if I remember correctly to take pictures. . .? I just want this stuff to work. . . and it does not. Thus anyone looking at this product should just invest in a quality lighting kit and at least know that it will work when you want it to. I'm never buying impact again and I hope I can save someone else from a similar fate.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
I use this for product photography for listing items for sale on my website, and other online merchant sites. This is the cheapest light duty kit I could find. It is definately very basic and the components are cheaply made, but for my use and the budget I had this fits the bill. There is plenty of light and it diffuses nicely with the included umbrellas. I wish the 250 watt bulb had an ubrella too. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this to anyone. There are no instructions for assembly, but it setup pretty easily, and the carrying bag is a nice plus. If you are looking for a pro-level studio lighting kit then you should spend "pro-level money". Otherwise purchase this without reservation.

This set was a great value. As a newbie, I have everything I need to get started right away. My only real complaint was that one of the light bulbs that came with the kit was not working and needs to be replaced.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
I was looking for an entry level lighting kit to provide consistent lighting for product photography for a catalog. This kit performs as I expected. Once I set up our camera (Nikon D80) to work with the 3200 degree lighting produced by the included bulbs, I got the results I was looking for. The only issue I had with the kit was a broken plastic handle on the mini-boom which was promptly replaced by B&H.

Solid gear at a very affordable price. Ideal for occasional use. I bought this kit for some simple video work. If I were doing video on a larger scale I would purchase florescent lights that are much more expensive, but a lot cooler to operate.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
I am looking to start a small video production company and this light kit was the perfect fit. However, every little piece seemed to be broken. The 2 500 watt lights came burnt out, and the adjustment knobs and plastic bag strap pieces snapped after 3 uses. Very annoying. [...] The kit is great, it just had a lot of broken parts.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
This was inexpensive so I did not expect much but I was happily surprised. The stands are sturdy, the lamp housing is ceramic and hardy, everything was easy to assemble and came in a great bag for toting. I can set up 3 point video lighting with this in about 15 minutes and it does a great job! There are no instructions with the kit but it was easy enough to figure out. If your on a budget and need lighting then this is the kit for you!
Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
You have to keep in mind the cost when comparing this kit to better ones. For the price, its a good kit. It's all relative.
There's a lot here (umbrellas, stands, reflectors, boom, carry bag etc).
The lights do run hot but thats tungsten lighting in general. You can install compact flourescent for cooler lights.
Bottom line: No kit for this price will be perfect. This however, does the job.

I use this kit on video shoots for interviews, it allows me to set up a basic 3 light set up. I recommend using the pro light with barndoors for hair light & a c-stand with grip arm for background cucoloris if you have the cash, the lights do run hot so buy a pair of insulated gloves to use when removing the bulbs after use & I recommend buying dimmer switches for all three lights I paid 9.95 for 1 dimmer switch + 1.95 for 3 prong adapter If you intend on using this kit in a small space even using 250wt bulbs is too much light, the dimmer switches allow some control over this problem

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
This is a nice light set for the money. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it came with no instructions. Perhaps it is intuitive for professionals who are used to working with lights, but for beginners like me, the lack of instructions was a bit frustrating.
I was able to figure it out, although I don't like the connector that holds the mini boom on the light stand. It is either too snug or too loose and adjusting is a pain. That could definitely use a re-design.
The carry case could be just a tad bit bigger so that re-packing is a bit easier.
Overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase, it's perfect for my first set of lights.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
There was one minor flaw with one of the tightening screws in one stand, but it was something we could repair without sending the product back. There are no instructions on how to put things together, but with a little patience and a couple of minutes it is easily done. It is a good product for those who will use them occasionally.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
I needed some hot lights for a simple video studio setup I have for making YouTube videos. I'm a long time and experienced photographer, but I just recently moved into video. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money, but I wanted something that was quality and would last several years. I scoured the B&H website looking for a multi-light kits and this one seemed to fit the bill for both price and quality (given the reviews). [...] I was surprised at the quality given the price. The stands are in fact air cushioned and of decent quality. The light fixtures are simple, but the materials look to be of good quality and the switches (what often fails) appear to be well constructed.I've already used the kits carrying bag for a photo gig and found that it too is well made and very useful.Overall I'm quite pleased with this lighting setup and have no plans to buy any additional lighting equipment at this time. It meets all of my expectations and actually exceeds them a little, I didn't expect a kit this nice.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:
This light set is a great beginning set and is quite decent for the price. As many have said, there seems to be no way to get even close to fitting it in the bag after it is assembled, which is unfortunate. I actually bought this set because it had a bag and now it basically functions as if it doesn't have one. I've used the set, so far, only for in-door lighting and it has worked very well for that. Also note, as others have, that it comes with no instructions at all. [...]

This is a nice and simple lighting setup. The bag makes it nice for transporting and storage. So far I am really loving this setup and am very happy with the color balance I am getting.
I get an extra set of bulbs just to be safe but I hope to not need them for a little while.
A little tough to get some of the handles to hold properly but I think it might be the nuts settling in still.
