I use the SB-600 (with a diffuser) on my Nikon D80 and the results are fantastic.
I can shoot in a small room, angle the flash head 45 degrees upward, and bounce the light off the ceiling. With Nikon's TTL (Through The Lens) technology, the flash with a diffuser won't wash out the subject. The colors are true and the shadows are not a problem. Red eye problems are a thing of the past.
I can shoot the SB-600 outdoors for a general fill-flash too. I would recommend using a Stroboframe Camera Flip flash bracket for those who wish to consistently practice flash photography. Most wedding photographers use them. You would need a Nikon SC-28 TTL Off-Camera Shoe Cord with the flash bracket too. If you do get a Stroboframe flash bracket, buy the Camera Flip version, not the Quick Flip. The Camera Flip will let you easily turn the camera body for vertical portrait photos with your shutter finger on top.
Overall, the SB-600 is easy to use with a detailed instruction manual that even the most novice photographer can understand. The recycle rate is extremely fast (~ 3.5 seconds) for wedding photography.

This was a great light to use, while it lasted. After only two months of light use, the rubber button on the side peeled off to reveal a very cheap looking inner spring. I super-glued it together, at which I had no further problems until a year later. Now suddenly the zoom function is completely shot, the light output is inconsistent, and the head swivels around unintentionally like a bobble-head doll. I use it very lightly and literally 2 months after the warranty is up, it begins to fall apart. I have a few friends that use these as well and have similar problems. It seems to be a very cheap build. I would recommend spending the extra money to get the SB-800.

I bought the SB600 to use as a slave flash to work in conjunction with my SB800. It works great and fires effectively nearly every time. Keep the SB600 where its sensor can "see" the master flash and you'll do fine with this flash.

I paid [$] ducats for this model 2 years ago. Then Nikon releases SB 700, essentially a rebadged SB 600 for over $100 more, and now this thing is selling used for 100 ducats more than when it was new!!Just incredible! I'm a Nikon fan but ... ok, you can say it's just a matter of supply and demand or coporate greed on part of Nikon. Overpriced now.I can just kick myself for not buying 2 units for [$] back then so I can use the tandem in commander/slave mode.

Pretty easy to set up and use. If you want to shoot off camera and sync it to your pop up flash it has to be on channel 3 which is kind of weird and the sensor doesnt always fire so eventually getting a transmitter will be better.

I've had my SB-600 for 4 years. I've hauled it thousands of miles and taken at least three thousand photo's with it. And with all that it has never failed to work. It works now almost as good as the day I got it.
I going to buy a SB-900 when my 600 fails but gosh who knows when that will be.

This model is for those who want some pro quality to their flash, but can't go with hefty top-of-the-line pricing. You really can do a lot with this model like a pro, and would only come up short if you either needed a huge flash guide, or, you required a complex lighting setup. The pull-out diffuser is a nice touch. The construction is solid. I like the locking mechanism with head tilting, unlike cheaper brands that are just friction setpoints. Nice selection of modes and choices.

I needed a 3rd light to give more dimension to my existing 2 SB800s. At $50.00 less than the new SB700, it's still a bargain. Being a Nikon flash, I knew it would work seamlessly with my D200 and existing flashes and it did. I was surprised as how much power it had. Would have liked the SU4 & commander that SB700 has, but at this price, you should pick it up while they're still available.

Prematurely discontinued: it's great! Get one! Now! Run! :o
This flash is excellent in all aspects, a great bang for the buck, and was prematurely discontinued mainly because it is the expensive SB700's toughest concurrent. Hopefully by the time that you read this you can still find SB600s in stock - I'm glad I got one, wish I could afford a few more!
On paper, the SB-700 comes with color gels, and automatically detects FX/DX. Well, buy the inexpensive gels for the SB-600, and guess what: it makes no visible difference in the light angle if you're with FX or DX, they're too similar. So, the SB-600 does all the SB-700 does, is more powerful, smaller, lighter and cheaper. Winner?
Seriously, it is really powerful, fast, handles several consecutive shots at ease, and works in wireless CLS mode with TTL perfection when commanded by my D7000's internal flash.
Much easier to use than the huge and expensive SB700, and a big step above the built in units: CLS will allow you to take pictures that look studio-like, while using a single SB600 handheld. No large stuff to carry around!
By the way, I strongly recommend the SG-31R IR Panel to covert your camera's built-in flash unit while in CLS mode - unless you use a SU800 instead of the camera's built in flash to control the other flashes -, gives a nicer flash spot on peoples' eyes.
Other touch: don't use it at full power directly pointed at people. This flash is very powerful, and can be uncomfortable to the subject if used improperly.
The Nikon SB600 flash is one of those rare occasions when you find a truly excellent product for a bargain of a price. Go get one (or more) while you can!
