I have used 2 batteries since I got my 50D about 18 months ago. They always hold up for a whole day of shooting. The real test was during a trip to France where I took about 3000 shots over less than 2 weeks. Shooting by day and downloading the pix at the end of the day, usually on the same battery. It's been great until lately, I noticed that the charge level drops pretty fast and I often have to use the back up battery fairly early. I am estimating these batteries have gone through about 12,000 shots; maybe I am being greedy but I was expecting longer life. I rarely use the live view mode; maybe 1/3 to 1/2 are sot as jpeg/raw files full size. I usually use the batteries until they go flat, maybe that has something to do with it. I read some place that lithium batteries should not be completely depleting before recharging, who knows! I am due for another set of batteries soon. I have checked reviews on after market batteries. Some are real inexpensive, but seems that quality is not constant, meaning you might have a 10% chance of getting a defective one and not find out it's gone bad after a couple of months of use. The "brand name" after market battery is cheaper and has fairly good reviews but [...] you only save 10 bux. So I'll stick with Canon.

I shoot with a Canon 5D very regularly, and I want a battery that lasts the whole day, at least. This battery wears down very quickly over the period of 6 months. I have 6 of these batteries and 4 of them die in about 30 minutes. However, the Canon factory made bats beat the generic batteries, so I don't really have a choice.

Camera battery. Hope the extra money for the Canon brand will be justified considering the unacceptable life of the generic brands that I've bought in the past.

Comments about Canon BP-511A Lithium-Ion Battery (7.4v 1390mAh):
First off, don't buy the knock offs. You will end up returning it and buying this anyways.
A battery backup is definitely needed for trips or if you will be shooting for long periods. Great for the 5D battery grip!
If you are shopping from Canada this battery is almost 100$ cheaper at B&H!

Comments about Canon BP-511A Lithium-Ion Battery (7.4v 1390mAh):
It's a Canon battery. It means Canon brand compatibility and quality. It lasts long, longer than my third party batteries and unlike my third party batteries, it properly displays its remaining charge on my 40D. Buy this if you don't want to worry about compatibility or charge length.

Comments about Canon BP-511A Lithium-Ion Battery (7.4v 1390mAh):
I bought this as a back-up for a Canon 40D. This is a really stong battery. I sat my camera up recently for a corporate headshot photo shoot and ran the camera over 2 hours straight and barely made a dent in the battery. I also do occasional sporting event shoots where the camera is on for up to four hours. There is always enough battery left to get the shots. It's pretty amazing.

I thought i would save a buck by buying an off brand rechargeable lithium-ion battery as one of my backups, It did not last. The Canon BP-511A has the maximum battery life to get you through.

I've bought other companys' versions of the BP-511A with mixed results. Sometimes they work as well (for less). But when I want a battery I can count on - I buy the real thing.

Comments about Canon BP-511A Lithium-Ion Battery (7.4v 1390mAh):
Rough and tough. Genuine Canon battery with the information imprinted on the side of the casing (not silk screened). I use them in the battery grips of my 20D and 40D and find I can photograph at an airshow all day on two batteries in each.
Impact resistant material is nice and don't shatter like aftermarket products if accidentally dropped. I'll pay a little extra every time for true Canon quality.

Batteries are not cool like big telephoto lenses, but they are the heart of the DSLR. This battery quietly gets the job done, day in and day out. B&H prices are quite reasonable..
