The Bogen/Manfrotto 055MF4 provides professional photographers with a "beefier" tripod that's still light in weight, simple to use, strong, and extremely versatile to position.
Without compromising on stability or rigidity of the tripod, the 055MF4 consists of carbon fiber legs that feature quick action lever locks in magnesium and resin. In addition, the design of the 3021PRO series top spider which offers four leg angle settings is also used with this model, and it allows for the center column to be converted into a lateral arm.
The center column itself is of the latest generation of aluminum and resin materials. The low-angle adapter forms the top section of the center column and is easily detached by simply unscrewing the knob at the bottom of the column. This enables the head to be left mounted on the center column when switching between low-angle and normal shooting positions.

This is a wonderful product and the second one I have purchased. The first one is still in use, just needed replacement for weddings and commerical work after first one looked ragged after four years and too many miles, trips, mountains, etc.
The tripod is lightweight and easy to use. You may need a weight bag when winds exceed 18-20 mph and or the gear weight approaches the maximum.
I strongly advocate keeping the center column in place and down at all times. Raising the center column drastically shifts the center of gravity, making the tripod very tipsy. I am 6'6" (2 meters) and have no problem using the tripod without the column (right angle viewfinder is needed, though). I originally replaced the column with the head plate on the first 055 and found that made hanging a weight bag much more difficult, took away the ability for side mounting the head/camera, and robbed me of the colum and head as an emergency monopod.
The column/center of gravity issue is the only reason why I would not make the rating 5-star.

Don't Rely On Its Bubble-Level!!
PROs:
Usable in cold ( UNlike metal-leg tripods, unless one wraps 'em in bicycle-handlebar cork ).
Light ( for the build & height, that is: wonderful )

PROs:
Usable in cold ( UNlike metal-leg tripods, unless one wraps 'em in bicycle-handlebar cork ).
Light ( for the build & height, that is: wonderful )
Solid ( supports good-size kit, hook your bag on the spider of the thing for adding weight's stability
Flip-locks. Why anyone would prefer twist-locks, I don't understand.
Horizonta center-column!! WAY excellent for straight-down shots.
Fits in carry-on luggage ( even if checked luggage's lost, *this isn't*, right? ).
Includes a plastic wrench thingy for tuning the firmness of the flip-locks.
CONs: bubble level is a bad joke ( it's on a split gripping piece -- the 2 halves clamp the column when you've got it horizontal -- so the LEVEL isn't level with the tripod-spider! Rotate the center column & see "level" drift around ( way-off when rotated to one orientation, and, without touching the legs at all, dead-on-level when the center column+clamp is rotated to another orientation! ) They should have put the level in the solid-part of the spider, not in the split-part. This is worse than useless: how many people are going to just trust the thing *without testing it* to discover it works wrong? Use a level on the tripod's center-column-platform ( or get one built into the base of your head ), & then level the camera as well, so panoramics ( etc. ) end up working right!
Uses grease between the top-end of the center column & the long shaft -- collects dust/sand. Should have been dry-lube.
Leg-end rubber caps fall off easily ( gonna glue 'em on with contact-cement, if they keep that up )
Center platform is engineered to assume a Midi or Large ( don't know which ) head, but mine's a mini, so the locking screws don't get anywhere near the bottom of the ballhead. For my small cameras ( G10 being one ), there's no logic in lugging a bigger head ( G10 can take glorious landscape/nature photos ), and the lack of tripod-to-head lock is annoying.
Included plastic wrench thingy for tuning the firmness of the flip-locks is lightly clipped onto a leg, so expect to lose it soon, unless you unwrap it from the leg & put it ( it's "C" shaped ) in your carry-all.
I'm giving it only 3 stars because of that design-engineering flaw that is going to wonk up many people's photos, without their understanding why.
IF you know to ignore the level, and always do, it's 5 stars...

Comments about Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 055MF4 Magfiber Pro Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
I needed a tripod that would serve me in the studio and on location. The 055MF4 is both rigid for heavy cameras and lenses, and light weight for easy transportability. The legs are a little stiff when unfolding but lock into place easily. This tripod is great for macro shots as well with little to no vibration or resonance being transmitted through the legs. Highly recommended.

Comments about Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 055MF4 Magfiber Pro Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
The tripod is light in weight and folds small which is ideal for traveling. I do a lot of nature photography , so sometimes out where it is hard to get around because it is light and folds small it is perfect. Right now it is still a little stiff but gets better every time I use it. I have a Bogen ballhead on it, so it is a perfect combination.

I'm quite happy with this tripod. It's light, stable and holds a good bit of gear.
When collapsed, it's fairly small. I purchased it at the NY store and brought it as carry-on luggage home.

Comments about Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 055MF4 Magfiber Pro Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
I use this primarily for bird and nature photography, with a Markins ball head. It's a great support for my D80 with a 300mm f/2.8 lens. Once set up, it's a breeze to use and quite stable, even as I swing the lens around to track animals.
A few minor issues:
Set-up and break-down can be aggravating, especially in colder weather. The leg segments tend to bind up and require a bit of jiggling to slide. I deal with this by simply moving the tripod around with legs extended during shoots.
The rubber feet are loose and slide off easily. I remedied this by replacing them with the 440SPK2 retractable-spiked feet, which also provide better traction outdoors.
Don't let those issues deter you though! The price is great, construction is solid, and after a lot of online research, I couldn't be happier with this rig.

This is a very stable tripod and is extremely versatile. It folds to just over 21" making it fairly compact. It is a little heavy (almost 4 1/2 pounds) but as a result is very stable. The flip levers make it easy to make quick adjustments.
I'm using it with the Manfrotto 804RC2 Tilt pan head which makes a nice combo.

So far I have used the 055MF4 indoors;I look forward to taking it out. I also look forward to using the horizontal center column as sometimes you can not get close enough due to the tripod legs. I only wish that it were yet lighter as I suffer from back and neck issues__which is why I chose this tripod as it is high enough for me that I need only extend the center column an inch or two and the tripod is perfectly stable.

I have my tripod for around 3 weeks and I love it! It's light and sold as a rock with my Canon ef 70-200L IS and my 100-400L IS lens. Manfrotto solid quality all the way. I will use it for Macro and wildlife Photography. It is awesome how low it will go and the ability to shoot straight down is a real plus. A bargin for the quality [...]!

Comments about Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 055MF4 Magfiber Pro Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
I recently bought this tripod for use with my Nikon D80. I've used it a handful of times with some long exposure night shots and have been very pleased. The legs are fairly lightweight, but the addition of good ballhead will tip the scales if you carry it for an extended period of time. I bought mine with a padded Manfrotto carrying bag which really makes this a lot easier, although a bag hinders any sort of quick setup. I also love the four sections, which allows it to compact to a really great size. Overall, I'd recommend this tripod to anyone looking for something strong, sturdy, and somewhat lightweight.

I've had this tripod for about a month now, and so far have been very pleased. It's stable and the height is excellent (I'm 6'1 and don't have to stoop unless I choose to). Haven't had any problems with the leg locks.
In a perfect world, it would be a little lighter and the strap would be longer, but for the price, it's a great piece of equipment. I use it with a D80 and up to 70-300 VR glass.

This is definitely not a 'small' tripod. I wouldn't say it's huge... but it's a good size. But it's extremely light without the head on!
No real cons yet... it comes with a carry-strap, but would have been nice if it included a bag or something to carry it in.

Lost a star as legs were sticky. Probably an easy fix but should be a smooth movement right out of the box. Other than that a really solid platform, highly recommended.
