Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This Impact 33" White Translucent Umbrella is suggested for use in head-and-shoulders portraits for one or two persons.

I feel alot better using the [$] umbrella in my portable kit though! Grab a few, great for shooting through in the studio or in the real world!

This came as part of a kit. It seems pretty cheap. It uses soft plastic bits to hold the umbrella's cloth onto the frame. It seems like in this case, a more sturdy version from a reliable brand might not be all that much more expensive, but as an add on to a kit, it seems fine.

These umbrellas came as a part of a hot light kit I purchased. The umbrellas are easy to use, create a nice diffused light and are light weight.

These are light weight and work great for portrait lighting. I say "starting point" only because I know I won't have them forever and I have nothing to compare them to as the two I purchased are my first set. I bought them to use with this 1000w 2-LT FLOOD DAYLT KIT w/6' STAND. Altogether a great starting point for a student's wallet!

It seems I go through these a lot, but it seems like gusts of wind love eating these things in 2's and 3's. I like these because they have the solid filler in the tube preventing them from crumbling when the screws are tightened in the brackets.

Great size, great price. I bought this as a replacement for an umbrella that came with my kit, and it worked perfectly! Lightweight, translucent, easy to use.

Great bargain umbrellas.
I was hoping that these umbrellas would collapse into a shorter length - but they do not have that feature.
Altogether a good accessory, at an excellent price.

I use this with the Qualite 300w tungsten light. It works well; produces a nice soft look to the light. It doesn't, however, stay on the light well if the light is pointed downward, but that's not a big deal because I don't do that too often anyways. Could probably tape it on or something if you had to.

easy to use, compact for storage and transportation. I shoot 3D art and these are not well suited for close up work as the armature frames of the umbrella reflect in the surface of the piece. They do help diffuse the light more evenly at average distances. I would recommend for portraiture or architectural photography.

So normally at this price I am expecting junk cause these things start at double the price and go up at most small camera outfits. This does the job it's supposed to do, and can't complain about the construction. It is a lightweight umbrella. If you are going to try to bend it, then it bends end of story, light weight get it. I would not call it flimsy by a long shot. Overall impression, yeah I would buy this again in a heartbeat, and it takes nice soft shots with my Nikon speed-lights, and handles the warmth from my Ari Tungstens (from not too close) just fine.

Great for indoor portraits, or outside if it isn't too windy. This smaller size is easier to move around in rooms with lots of furniture, ceiling fans etc. It's thin vinyl like a shower curtain. Treat it like your other good tools and it should last quite a while.

I use this umbrella whenever I see fit. The best thing about this umbrella is the price for what you get. It's inexpensive, but it helps provide great light when used with a flash. The only thing bad about this umbrella is that the base of it that you attach to a swivel is a bit soft, so if you screw the swivel into it to much the base of the umbrella can be dented. But, if you're cautious, you can avoid that.

Use to shoot thru with Canon 580EX II, Nice fill light in the shade. Broke it the first time I used it. Fell over on the stand I was using it with. Bent 3 of the umbrella ribs, still works but bent to heck!

As a semi-pro photographer I use these umbrellas for lighting models with my Canon 580EX II flash units. They work exceptionally well in this respect. Just remember to weigh down the tripods when shooting outside in the wind ;-)
