Every camera should have this cap on when not in use and no lens attachet to it. I have one cap per camera thai I own. It helps keep the greater part of the dust and dirt out of your camera body.

Replacement body cap that comes with your Nikon.
My one Nikon actually came with a white plastic snap-on and I got this to replace it. Also got one for a used camera I got, whose body cap seemed to have lost some grip when closed.
I've also tried a few aftermarket ones, but they never seem to fit the way I like them to.

With today's digital cameras, dust is one of your worst enemies. Keep several extra body caps on hand and protect the inside of your camera from dust when a lens is not mounted on the camera. I've tried cheaper caps, but never as happy with them as I am with the real McCoy. Show your true colors, after all it's a Nikon.
