Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

I hate the traditional hard plastic hoods. So much so that I often refuse to use them. This little beauty is perfect. It's side walls are flexible so there is no need to take it off and flip it around when not needed. You simply collapse it onto itself. Now, some here will complain that it blocks the focus ring when collapsed . . . two things, most shots now a days are made using auto-focus so this is really now an issue. Second - and MORE important - the hood can be collapsed half way down. That is, it can become more of a ring around the end of the lens (not extended past the end of the lens but parallel to it) or it can be pushed back all the way so it looks as if it was put on the camera with the hood facing in.
So yeah, if it is all the way pushed back it will block some focus and/or zoom rings on the lens . . . so if you need to have access to those rings on the lens only fold it back half way. EASY SOLUTION TO A NON-EXISTENT "PROBLEM."
Otherwise, this is an excellent product and highly recommended.

This rubber hood does the job of preventing stray light hitting the lens. It squashes down flat when not needed, but is very wide. It also screws onto the lens like a filter, would have been much better if it attached as a click-on so that you could also reverse it and fit it into a lens bag.

The HR - 2 lens hood was exactly what I wanted. I like the fact that it will screw on tight. It doesn't rattle when extended and being able to fold it over for storage is great. Love it!

Comments about Nikon HR-2 Lens Hood:
Since this hood is rubber, it can be collapsed back over the lens, almost creating a protective case when not in use. The rubber is soft, so if you bump something or someone, it won't damage anything or anyone. It's worth the money, buy Nikon. Don't bother with the knock-off just to save a few bucks.
Note: The factory lens cap can still be used when this hood is in place.
Used on 50mm f/1.8 D-AF Lens.

Comments about Nikon HR-2 Lens Hood:
I was a little skeptical with the hood being rubber but it turned out pretty nice ot fds back so you can leave it on the camera an flip it forward to use it my only complaint is that it had to be purchased separately Nikon should have included the hood with the lens as every lens should have it's hood

I use the HR-2 Rubber Lens Hood on my Nikon 50mm 1.4D to block stray light and for extra protection to the front end of my lens, I like the fold down design which makes this lens hood easy to store. This little baby is worth the money for the service that it provides.

I attached this hood to my 50mm Nikon 1.4D lens. It works great. The rubber is better than the plastic hood - it collapses when your camera is stored, and you just pull it out when in use. Quick and easy...

Comments about Nikon HR-2 Lens Hood:
Like most OEM Nikon products it fits perfectly. I keep hoods on most my lenses if for no other reason than to give the glass that extra protection against accidental smudges or fingerprints.

Comments about Nikon HR-2 Lens Hood:
A lens hood is a necessity for blocking stray light and providing some minimal protection for your lens. This hood accomplishes those basic tasks. It would be nice, though, if it were made of sturdier material than rubber and if it allowed you to use the lens cap at the same time. Until something better comes along, though, this one is well worth buying.

Purchased a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens. The hood is a necessary accessory to reduce glare and protect my new lens. Wish it was included with the lens.

Comments about Nikon HR-2 Lens Hood:
I use this hood for both my Nikon 50 f1.8 , its very useful. Because of the rubber construction you can expand when ever needed and shrinks when you need to store. That way you can keep the hood lens and camera together for most of the time.

Comments about Nikon HR-2 Lens Hood:
I have used the lens hood for my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens. The rubber collapses to tuck back onto the lens when not in use, which is very handy as it means that you don't need to unscrew it every time you want to take it off, you simply just push it back out of the way. It is also just the right size to shade the end of the lens. I have been using it for a few weeks now and have not noticed any glare on my lens.

Good look on the lens.
Easy and convenient to use.
It is perfect for my 50mm f1.2 AIS, but the price is kind of expensive for a rubber hood.

Comments about Nikon HR-2 Lens Hood:
This is a great lens hood - screws onto the camera, allows the lens clap to clip into it, and easily rolls back over the lens when you don't want to use it. Plus it takes up a lot less space in your camera bag than a plastic hood.
