Hoya 77mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter
The Hoya 77mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.
Digital camera CCD or CMOS sensors are highly susceptible to reflections. This stray light can ruin your photographs with flare and ghosting. Hoya Digital Multi-Coating reduces any internal reflections, which means a clearer image with greater contrast.
A UV filter not only minimizes the bluish cast sometimes found under daylight conditions, but is also the best available protection against accidental damage to the front element of your lens. A lens that accidentally gets dropped on its front element while hiking can potentially be saved by purchasing this item. Some people refer to it as "cheap insurance".
As a lens protector, it should be left on at all times. Aside from that more-than-significant benefit, UV filters render your photos clearer, sharper and more contrasty. For those who enjoy outdoor photography, especially distant vistas, a UV filter can produce a more distinct and acceptable image by removing much of the blue tint normally associated with atmospheric haze.
The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. I was told that UV filter is for mainly protect lens only. So it doesn't matter even i got cheap filter. Wrong! i use $20 filter On 24-105 L that came free with lens, before i buy this. Flare... flare...flare... I took that cheap filter out, no more Flares. then put on Hoya pro 1 UV filter, it is about same as no filter on. Since i got Hoya pro 1, i bought same filter whenever i got new lens. Worth the money. Don't try to save money on cheap filter. Get the nice good Filter.

Even colors were affected, they looked weak. Lens I tested this on was 70-200L IS F2.8 Mark II. Buy the Hoya UV(0) HMC Super Multicoated, you'll be much happier and its cheaper.

Performance, Quality, VALUE, Low Profile in fact it is the same low profile as my Heliopan UV SH-PMC Multicoated ES 77mm ... AND, I feel it is as good. The Hoya also has these ridges on the edge to help hold it to put it ON and OFF. You can spend more , but I don't think you will get more in a UV. and yes, I can use my Nikon Lens caps on my 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 VRII ... and at 24mm no problem. Really like the knurled edge and ultra thin profile. Hoya HMC-level filter has a smooth edge, which I don't like as well, hence will stick w/ the Pro 1. Was concerned that the reduced profile may not accept a lens cap or might scratch the element or coating, fear not, stock lens caps attaches fine, with sufficient space, so as to avoid the cap contacting the glass element. Hoya makes a quality filter. After seeing the quality, I won't buy a lens without purchasing the corresponding Hoya filter.

This UV filter is multicoated but it is very clear when I see through this one. It comes with a square plastic case which I dont like. This filer catches dirt easily and need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Overall, the performances are pretty well. It serves my purpose.
