Comments about Sound Devices 442 ENG/EFP Deluxe Field Mixer Kit:
Hi there,I've just tested the Sound Devices Mixer 442 and here is my opinion about it.What I really appreciate on this mixer is the possibility of outputs. It is for me the best mixer on this aspect. Very cleverly done. Now I thought at the beginning... well I'm not sure about using Lemo 3 pins for aux output instead of classic XLR... but When I thought about it I realized that the size of that mixer would have been too big and then Sound Devices had to compromise on that and they did an amazing job on it... You just need to purchase the good cables and there you go...I really appreciate the menu of the mixer. I have to say, the first time you try to understand how it is working, you feel a bit lost. But after a few times of practice, a nine year old boy could do it. Honestly, once again good job from Sound Devices.I tested the Limiter as well and I have to say, very good sound quality at the output. I calibrated it at +6dBu and it's just perfect.... oh yes, you need to know that coming of manufacture, the VU/PPM meter is set at 0dBu and not +4dBu as competitors do. The possibility of brightness choice for the VU/PPM meter is a super idea as well. Direct under the sun, you boost your brightness and here you go, it takes 2 seconds to do...Regarding the use on the field, it's great design... everything is in front of you, so super easy to use as well. What I didn't feel so comfy about is the weight... I have to say, I tried the 442 in a Petrol carry bag and it is heavy! But once again, can you do lighter with so much features on a mixer as this one??? Maybe not.And my last comment would be about the Mic preamps. I used a SQN-4S a lot and I have to say... the SQN preamps sounds better... I'm sorry guys I have to say it. It doesn't mean the 442 is not good. Far from that. But it could be better.Other wise, if you are looking for a very friendly use, good sound quality for a good price... go for Sound devices 442. You won't regret it.
Expertise: Sound recordist for 6 years.... My god it's going quick and still so much to learn.
Problems Encountered: I just had it for a few days... So I couldn't really see any problems.
Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Not owned but used a lot: SQN-4S
Items I Recommend: comfy bag to carry it all day on your shoulders and back.
