The .75 wide angle converter will give you a 26mm zoom equivalent. I attached mine using a metal Lensmate adaptor instead of Canon's plastic adaptor. (The entire setup feels more solid and professional this way.) I was impressed with the clarity of the images, and the fact that there was very little distortion of the images even when zoomed all the way out. I feel like I got my money's worth in these respects (i.e. sharpness and lack of distortion). The lens comes packaged very nicely with some strong lens covers and a padded lens bag.My only complaint is that I wish Canon had put some front threads on the lens for filters. I like doing outdoor landscape and sky photography and like using polarizing and UV filters. I may eventually have to purchase another wide-angle converter lens that accepts filters. The only other thing I would mention is that the G7/G9 line that this lens is designed to complement does not start with enough wide zoom to begin with (the equivalent of a 35mm zoom) and so even with this excellent .75 wide-converter making it 26mm, I'm still left wanting a little more. But don't get me wrong, these are just honest, minor quibbles about a lens/camera that I am overall VERY happy with.

Expertise: Amateur photographer

Problems Encountered: No front threads.

Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Digital DSLRs. Other wide converters for point & shoot digicams.

Items I Recommend: Lensmate 58mm adaptor for G7/G9 cameras.

Technically it is a very sound product. The problem that I find with it is that it is much larger than expected. I bought a wide angle converter for my canon video camera that was much smaller and had expected something a little more reasonably sized based on that. I probably should've done the optic calculations or looked harder to find the size. My fault. Still, had I known it was going to be that large, I would've insisted on it being wider than it is. At this size, I should've just moved up to an SLR.

GREAT PIECE OF GLASS FOR THE G SERIES

Pros

  • Rugged
  • Strong Construction

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Tough To Attach

Best Uses

  • Indoors/Low Light
  • Landscape/Scenery

Comments about Canon WC-DC58B 0.75x Wide Angle Converter Lens:

The converter was designed by Canon specifically for their zoom, it is a high quality heavy chunk on glass, and well worth the money. It introduces almost no barrel distortion, which is generally a problem with cheaper off brand converters. Make sure you pick the right tube adapter for the camera though, I ordered the wrong one and had to return it.
Only problems, you can't use the zoom with it on, so its more like a fixed 18mm lens, and it is a little hard to screw it on the tube, and it would be easy to mess up the thread. You want to screw the tube onto it, then mount it to the camera.

Comments about Canon WC-DC58B 0.75x Wide Angle Converter Lens:

I use the WC-DC58B wide angle converter for photographing automobiles, and interiors. This lens is sharp and consistent out to the edges, and is an excellent way to get to the 35 mm equivalent of a 26 mm lens. It is large and heavy, so it requires special handling - I usually grasp the lens barrel (combined with the required adapter) instead of the camera. It is susceptible to lens flare when shooting anywhere close to the direction of the sun - surprising since the front glass element has a strong violet-colored coating. Otherwise it gives very good results - I like that it maintains f2.8 max aperture. Very good value.

Comments about Canon WC-DC58B 0.75x Wide Angle Converter Lens:

This lens is pricey for what it does compared to the cheaper 3rd party alternatives, but you get what you pay for. The optical clarity and performance of this lens is excellent. The G9 is a great camera, but this lens truly makes it shine by giving you a much wider angle.
Though I love this lens, I hate it's size and weight but that is the price for good optics. Unfortunately, this simple plastic adapter does not come w/this lens and is a separate $30 purchase. It is also as heavy, if not heavier than the G9. The lens is huge! The diameter is taller than the G9's making a once-discreet street cam an attention grabber. But for travel, this is a truly excellent choice.

Comments about Canon WC-DC58B 0.75x Wide Angle Converter Lens:

Bought this lens for shooting home interiors and cars. Major surprise was that it maintains max f=stop f 2.8, which is very nice for a lens with effective (35mm) focal length of about 26mm. Lens requires many turns to securely screw it onto the lens adapter, so I'm considering purchasing another lens adapter that I'll keep permanently attached to this lens. Image quality better than expected. Very good value.

Comments about Canon WC-DC58B 0.75x Wide Angle Converter Lens:

I wanted to be able to go wider than the 35mm equivalent on the G9 mainly for landscapes, and I think it does very well for those scenes. The definition remains very good, with some barrel distortion. Adding this to the G9 seems to take the combination out of the compact class, as the weight of the converter is comparable to a prime lens for a DSLR. The lens does not have threads to attach a supplementary filter. Rather than the Canon adapter I purchased a metal Lensmate adapter,
