Kinda a must have if you ever put the camera on a tripod. It is small enough to tuck away but just right for a thumb control. The Zoom control has nice resistance for smoothly changing speed, the trigger is where it should be and it has Focus controls there as well. Compared to the other monstrosity they offer this is a much more sensible option for the HVR series of cameras.

I'm using it with my HXR-NX5. The commander is made of plastic, and at first sight it could look that it is not reliable, but when you look closer, you can see, that it is made of good, solid plastic. It is a must have for anyone, who uses a tripod for shooting. You can easily attach it to tripod arm or tripod leg (in rare cases this way is more convenient) You can switch zoom direction in a reverse if you are left-handed. There are 3 zoom speeds. The focus control is not very convenient, because when you focus, you can accidentally push the zoom rocker. But I don't use this commander for focusing, the ring on the camera is a more comfortable way to focus, the remote i use only for zooming in and out. Also, when you are attaching this remote to the tripod arm, be careful not to attach it too close to the tripod arm handle, because then the zoom rocker could be stuck. Also this commander is a must have, if you use your HDV with steadycam. I gave this unit 4 stars only because it is overpriced.

Very useful if you are mounting your camera on a tripod or shoulder mount. Makes controlling the camera alot more convenient and reduces fatigue on your arm. Must have accessory.

I've recently gotten this remote. It is a good product according to price. I use it with my Sony HVR Z5. Controls are nice and smooth. The zoom variable speed really helps. Adjustment to tripod pan handle is easy and feels confortable. I wish it were cheaper, but it works fine.

The zoom controls and start/stop were the perfect addition to my setup. My camera did not support the focus button but I generally shoot with auto focus anyway.

We use this during our live church services that stream online. We love the different speeds because when dealing with volunteers, certain camera men have "heavier hands" and tend to zoom not as smooth as others and this allowed us to gauge that.

We didn't have any issues with it! Great product!

This controller makes it easy to run the camera in a more comfortable position. Just came off a shoot which involved a couple of 16 hour days and couldn't have done them without the controller.

Really nice well built remote control. I expect it to last a long time, solid construction, and does everything as advertised.

Very convenient when attached to a tripod arm. However, when using away from camera, with extension cable, does not easily lie flat on surface, and therefore can be a bit cumbersome whe using it away from camera. This is a minor point, but some additional thought in design could have addressed this inconvenience.

I would also like to have seen more control features. Seems a bit overpriced when compared to other Sony products.

Overall, for hooking to a tripod and working basic camera controls, this remote works great.

I have modified a dual handle, shoulder brace for my Hi-Def Sony Z5 camera. The Sony RM1BP remote control mounts on one of the handles and operates the zoom and start and stop funchtion with my thumb with out any camera movement. The zoom speed is controlable with a switch for 3 speeds and then changed with the rocker control. It seems to be well built and mounts in many places. I also use it as an extention zoom on my jib arm. Exactly what I expected.

We are producing training videos, many of them, and the ability to start and stop the camera, without having to constantly walk back and forth is a REAL time saver. The product is also great for smoothing out camera controls, making tripod work even better. I use this now as a matter of habit, great tool.

I love the controller. I am so use to being bent over the camera controlling the zoom manually that this added feature makes me feel spoiled. Really Spoiled!!!

I only had one problem with the unit. I accidentally attached it too close to the tripod arm, and the zoom kept getting stuck during shooting a basketball game.

I needed the product really bad, but I can see where there would be much better versions of this. For a cheap, quick fix, this will definitely work.

Used with a Sony HVR-S270U w/Carl Zeiss lens to remotely control lens functions when mounted to a tripod in a studio configuration. The focus control did not function until I assigned the lens focus to a preset on the camera... now operates fine.
