The Gitzo GT2540 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs uses advanced "Carbon 6X" carbon fiber material for its leg construction. This improved tubing is stronger, lighter and as resistant as its 12 layer predecessor. Carbon "6X" is manufactured using a complex, 3-D process weaving 6 layers of carbon fiber into smooth, solid constructed tubes.
The GT2540 is ideal for use with DSLRs with 200mm lenses (up to a 300mm maximum), lightweight camcorders, and spotting scopes. It offers an excellent load capacity rating of 26.4 lbs (12 kg) and good torsional rigidity.

Comments about Gitzo GT-2540 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
After owning three tripods in the $100 and under category, I finally bought the real thing.
I've since used it on commercial assignments as well as on a 9 day backpacking trip in the Sierra.
I LOVE this tripod. Despite some recommendations I've read to buy the 3-leg one because it's less work to collapse, I chose the 4 leg because it's smaller when collapsed for packing and carrying.
I made the mistake of buying it with the 2750QR off-center ballhead. That head is big, heavy and unwieldy (and poorly made). I've since replaced it with the GIG1077M for my backpacking trip and was delighted with it. Used it with a 5D and 17-40L and 24-105L. Can carry it sideways and ball head keeps tight.
Fantastic, fantastic tripod.
Don't settle for less.

Comments about Gitzo GT-2540 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
I just bought this tripod after having a very cheap one. I like it over all, the only problem is that the operation of the leg extensions are kind of a pain. It simply takes too long to extend the legs. Once they are extended, it is a very stable tripod and very light weight.

Comments about Gitzo GT-2540 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
When I started buying digital SLR gear I stayed away from Gitzo because it's way expensive.
But recently I found out why...they are worth every penny. I swear by these tripods...I own 2...I have a GT1550T (with a RRS BH-40 LR ballhead) and a GT2540 (with a RRS BH-55 LR ballhead).
Buy it! You will love it!

Comments about Gitzo GT-2540 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
If you're looking for a sturdy, easy-to-use tripod that's small and light enough to take into the back-country, this one is great! There are smaller, lighter Gitzos available, but the 2540 is a bit more stable. If you're thinking about it, just get it! It's everything you need unless you regularly photograph in 40 MPH wind gusts!

Comments about Gitzo GT-2540 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
This thing is great! After falling into the trap of buying cheap tripods (3), I finally bit the bullet and bought a really good one. I also got a Really Right Stuff ballhead at the same time. What a great combination. Long overdue!

Comments about Gitzo GT-2540 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
Was looking for a lightweight tripod suitable for long hikes and wanted to keep the entire set (legs/head) at or below 4 pounds. I paired the Gitzo with a Markins M10 ballhead, the TB-20 tripod base, and a Really Right Stuff lever clamp. The entire setup weighs under 4 pounds with the center column removed and easily supports my 5D with 70-200 2.8L IS or the 5D and 100-400L IS. The quality is evident right from the start and the workmanship is top-notch.
