Lastolite HiLite Illuminated White Background (5 x 7')
The Lastolite HiLite Illuminated White Background is a unique way to achieve hi key photographs. This inventive system, allows the photographer to minimize lighting scenarios while achieving spectacular results.
The HiLite Background is different in that it permits you to place your strobe head INSIDE the background, completely directing the light to the background and filling it with white light. No more worrying about 'spill' or having to test to see if the background light is positioned correctly since the background will be evenly lit. Furthermore, because the background is actually illuminated it means the subject can stand virtually right in front of it without casting a shadow.
This system also works as a rear softbox and can illuminate your subject as well. This means you can simply use use one other light in the front and you're ready to shoot.

Great results even with full auto shooting on my Canon EOS 7D.
Highly recommend you watch the demo video for speedlight & HiLite setup.
For my first shots, I used my one speedlight(slave) in the HiLite and the build-in flash(master) using the automatic setting & E-TTL. Got great headshots.
As I added another speedlight to fill in and used manual setting I got even better results (with a few practice shots). For manual flash setting, I used F/4 in the HiLite, f/16 for the fill-in flash and f/8 & 16 for the built-in. I played around with it for a little while before I got the results I wanted for a group photo and product photos.
I also recommend you watch the demo video for folding the Hilite & putting it back into the carring case.

It has been useful to blow a out pure white background behind larger products I shoot. I also am excited to use it with people too! ( they are much more exciting to shoot than products)

You definitely pay for the convenience with the price, but it does make creating photos with a high key white background very simple and easy.

the HiLite allows me to shoot in smaller spaces where a cyc wall or properly lighting seamless white background paper would not be feasible.
one caveat, though: when shooting full-length, you really need something to provide a flat white floor. i purchased the lastolite vinyl train, but it wrinkles and rarely offers a smooth white floor in the photo results. it's a quick fix in photoshop, but extra work nonetheless.
if getting the high-key look without having to drag a client to a studio is important, look no further. however, if you're shooting in your studio, there are less-expensive options for high-key results.
separately, the HiLite can also be used as a large soft-box... but that's a nice-to-have and, again, i wouldn't buy it for that purpose - there are far less-expensive options.

I have had my HiLite 5X7 for a couple of week now and have already used it commercially twice. One problem is that I wish I would have gotten the larger one. The white vinyl train is nice but looks sloppy. It come rolled up in a tube that crinkles the vinyl and is really hard to straighten up when photographing full lengths. I taped it to the ground but still looks funny in the pictures.
The light is beautiful, creates a little lens flair but its nice.

This product is great! Easy to use, light and versatile! Once you get used to putting it away, then you'll be happy! I am able to put it on it's side for shots of people sitting or with big groups. This is the choice product for isolated backgrounds. Also great with colored gels.
