The 501HDV Fluid Video Head features improved drag in both axes and switchable counterbalance for the latest ultralight high-definition camcorders. A sliding camera plate helps balance uneven payloads due to outboard batteries or matte boxes, dual rosettes permit left- or two-handed pan arm configurations, and the rear-mounted spirit level facilitates rapid setups.

I needed a good video tripod for my Cannon 7d. Used the 501 head before I bought this and thought it was adequate. Now that I have it and can really play with setting it is awesome for price....wanted to buy a miller head but for the price.... really good here.... don't have alot of weight on the sticks... but I'd buy something bigger for anything above a gl1 type of camera... but for the 7D...... nice setup

If you want to step into something better than a flimsy tripod, Manfrotto is the name to go with, and here's a great entry tripod and head for the money. I'm using a XH-A1 and this works well in my opinion.
The sticks are simple to extend. They include a snap on tightener for the leg locks. They're sturdy, and being aluminum gives it a little added weight. There isn't a mid-level spreader option though. The leg joints have push in locks so you can spread them out pretty wide. The integrated ball head works well.
The 501 head is good. It pan and tilts smoothly. But when you first start out a move, it can stick a little. You have to control it just right. I heard from some people that this wears off with time, but we'll see. The friction controls, I'm not so fond of. At complete looseness, it's not that loose compared to something like the 516. Tightening doesn't really do too much, it actually works more like locking it down.
Great sticks for the $. Head could be better, but is smooth, making this package a good starter or workhorse option.
