The Gitzo GT1541T Traveler 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs uses a unique patented 180° folding mechanism that accommodates a head inside the folded tripod legs, which makes this the smallest folded tripod for its open size and number of sections. In addition, this tripod uses advanced "Carbon 6X" carbon fiber material for its leg construction. This improved tubing is stronger, lighter than and as resistant as its 12 layer predecessor. Carbon "6X" is manufactured using a complex, 3-D process weaving 6 layers of carbon fiber into smooth, solid constructed tubes.
The GT1541T is ideal for use with a pro DSLR with a 135mm lens (up to a 200mm maximum), MiniDV camcorders, or spotting scopes. This Series 1 model is the ideal solution for photographers on the move or when space and weight are key factors.

I purchased this tripod with the Gitzo G1178M ballhead as a super-lightweight and portable setup to take with me to Kauai this August. It is replacing a Giottos MT9170 tripod with MH3000 Pro heavy duty ballhead and Giottos M621 Quick Release Assembly with a long & short plate as my setup (which comes in at over a whopping 10+ pounds). This Gitzo setup is just a fraction of the weight and totals out at 2.85 total pounds (that is without the plate that is always attached to my camera now). AMAZINGLY light! My wife would usually carry around my tripod and mumble about it the whole time because it was a beast. Now she actually enjoys carrying around this little treat and asks me all the time "want me to carry the tripod?" THAT was worth the price alone! hehe
It is super compact as well. At just a hair over 16.5 total inches in length (and that includes the ballhead) when folded up... it will easily fit within a backpack or carry-on when flying. I even attach it to my Crumpler 7-million dollar home with a carabiner and put it at the top of the bag while folding the bag flap over it to secure it and it travels along nicely that way.
So we've covered super-light and extremely compact... what about sturdiness? I'll admit that I held on to my Giottos beast of a tripod because I figured something as light as the Gitzo Traveler wouldn't be able to stand up to strong winds or being knocked around. I was wrong. The first weekend I had it I took it up to Boulder where they were having 65+ mph gusts of wind. I was there a little earlier where it was gusting up to 40 mph and this little beauty held up wonderfully even fully extended and with my 70-200mm lens on it and that was without using the anchor hook. I ended up using the hook on it with my bag because I didn't know how strong the gusts were gonna get but it did fine even without it. These legs are very sturdy and the locking mechanisms don't fail. When completely deployed you can push down on it with a lot of body weight and it doesn't budge a bit.
I've never been able to deploy a tripod and get it setup for a shot as fast as I can with this one. The G-locks on this tripod make it super easy to deploy. You can easily unlock all three locks on a leg with one twist of the wrist and extend it all the way by just pulling on the outer-most leg. A quick quarter-turn of each lock on the leg and it is set. Take-down is just as easy and fast... a quick quarter turn of all three locks... push in on the outer-most leg to contract and then one twist of the wrist while holding on to all three locks and it is ready to pack up and move on to the next shot.
I really researched my tripods when trying to find the ultimate setup for travel and/or hiking and I believe that research paid off. I wasn't 100% comfortable with the price at first but when you get the BH package of this tripod with the G1178M ballhead you are already saving about $100 there. Couple that with the $100 rebate that Gitzo has/had going at the time and $200 off of the complete setup made it very enticing. It was almost like getting the legs for $50 off and the ballhead for free!
I've always been of the mindset that with many things in life you get what you pay for. This tripod is no exception. The price may seem a little steep for some people but after having used it several times already since receiving it I can say it was well worth the cost and if I were to lose it I would definitely buy it again even at full price!

Used this on photo trip to Yellowstone in winter. Great for weight, but at same time a draw back as a little unstable for Telephoto in low light conditions. The weight however is great for traveling these days and weight restrictions.

This Gitzo has saved me money! I wanted a tripod to travel with US and EU; wanted strong, wanted light. I've heard it said: "everybody buys a second tripod - or wants/needs to upgrade the lesser model they now have". I'm cheap - I decided I only wanted to buy one rather than starting less and later upgrading: Gitzo was the name that kept rising to the top of the list.
This unit is plenty strong for my D7000, plenty light and plenty short when collapsed. Does it do what I need? Uh...GITZO!
The frosting?... Gitzo giftcard rebate! I so love it when things work out. Thanks B&H!

I have used this tripod around the world because it is small but stable.
Better to have a smaller lighter tripod than no tripod at all. Even used it with all three legs extended and together as a monopod for a 500mm. Gitzo is the best.

This tripod is exactly what I was looking for. Very lighweight, stiff, and folds down small enough to fit in my equipment case. Very easy to set up and breakdown.

I needed a lightweight tripod for travelling and hiking - this worked out perfectly. I did some research and decided to get a Markins Q3 Traveller with their quick release plate. This ballhead was designed for the Gitzo Traveller. What an outstanding combination. I own a Nikon DS3 with a few lenses including the 70-200mm 2.8 so I needed something fairly strong. The entire setup is light so I wouldn't trust it in high wind, but other than that it works great.

With carry on luggage space at a premium, I was able to pack this tripod in the bottom of my carry on and not risk losing it to damage or theft in my checked luggage. Extremely light weight I hardly noticed the extra weight in my bag.

I use it as a traveling tripod since it fits in a small space, can go in my suitcase, and does not put me over airline weight limits. The legs are easy to extend and it is very stable for its size. I used it in Yellowstone in the midst of a blizzard and it kept the camera steady and did not blow over.

Comments about Gitzo GT-1541T Traveler 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Supports 17.6 lbs (8kg):
Smooth as silk, light as a feather, and holds my Canon 5D with 24-105mm lens rock steady and very secure. The legs slip out easy and firm. There isn't any slack in the couplings. What I liked most was the way the legs can be folded around the extension cutting off almost a whole inch from the collapsed position. This makes for very neat compact feeling when slapped to my back in the Katza backpack. Another amazing feel about this tripod was the magnesium alloy leg locking switches. It creates a strong stop against the chims when the legs are spread out. Just an amazing bit of quality craftsmanship. Knowing the premium price for these legs almost deterred me. But tooling around the City with them in my pack makes me greatful every block that I walk. There wasn't anything lighter, cooler, or proud to own as this tripod. I matched it up with the GH1780QR ball head which made a perfect match. In the end I saved $80 on each by mailing in the rebate which was valid until February 28, 2011. If you are hesitating in buying this tripod don't procrastinate too long as the rebate offer will expire soon and I don't know if they will have an offer like this again anytime soon.

This thing is small, light, stable and versatile. It feels like it costs as much as it does, but it gets the job done well. I looked at a lot of tripods, and am very happy with this purchase.

This is a great travel tripod, very light, yet very sturdy. Love how the tripod folds up around the ball head giving it extra protection. I have a Nikon with an 18-270mm lenses and the tripod handles it very nicely. Another great thing about this tripod is that it fits in a carry-on suitcase, great for those people who travel by air and don't want to risk putting their equipment in their checked luggage. You can't go wrong with this tripod. Very well made and a breeze to set up and use.

I bought it so it can fit in my carry-on. Previously I had a Manfrotto 190CXPro4, which would fit also but looks more like a club so I didn't want to take the chance. Using it with a Markins Q3 Emille, the ballhead base is too big (get the traveler version). Compared to the Manfrotto: lighter, has higher weight rating (somehow I doubt it), feels a little more fragile, it can be extended and closed faster but you have to pay more attention that you securely locked it, it's quite stable but I have a light set up for now (the biggest is Nikon D90 with 70-300). With this set up it damps most of the vibrations but not entirely, probably I have to put extra weight on it. Overall I would say it's 4.5 stars comparing to 4 stars for the Manfrotto. If want the best it's worth it, but it definitely is less value than the Manfrotto, as it costs 50-75% more. Didn't use yet in more challenging conditions, such as sand or water, where the Manfrotto did well.

I have been researching for good tripod for months and decided to purchase Gitzo 1541T. I used this tripod for Nikon D90 with 18-200mm/12-24mm wide angle lenses. The tripod is very light and sturdy, and I usually take it on my hike with me. Although the tripod is a bit expensive than I would like to spend but I am very happy with my decision.
