I watched the dvd in addition to reading the HV30 user manual. I only watched it once, but that's because it answered all the questions I had, and had a lot of great info.
I am new to film, and so learning how to use all the features, and get through the multi-menu setup of the hv30, by watching it on film helped out a lot. There were great pointers, too, like how to frame shots and how to adjust white balance (which is super easy and gets way better low-light/fluorescent light/night footage than I think most hv30 users think is possible).
The only bad part was sitting through the whole dvd. It's a little better than those high school film projects you probably did for english class, but not much. Still, it was like having someone there to show you how to best use the camera.

This video was a good introduction to the camera. It covered most of the major menu options and all the controls. There isn't enough information presented that can't be learned from the manual to make it worthwhile, however.
It does have some factual errors, however. The most glaring one was the claim the SD DV recorded in LP mode is lower in quality than when recorded in SP mode. That is simply not true. Both use exactly the same 25 Mbits/second encoding. It couldn't be otherwise to be compatible with the DV spec. What is different is the slower speed at which the tape is moved, striping the data closer together on the tape. It is playback later on a different deck with a slighly different LP tape speed that can cause problems. The video is absolutely the same quality in LP as in SP if you can replay it successfully, however.

The product is good and well prepared, but in my case I already knew the camera did not bring much advantage, yet seem to parabens.
And for most lay people will bring enough benefits

It was nice to have a video on my product, not one like mine. Very informative and had several points not in the manual. I will watch many times and will use as a reference. Much better to view the video than to read a manual.
Would recommend to anyone with the Canon HV30.

Good stuff. demonstrates features well.
good introduction to a new camcorder.
The video made the statement "never use the autofocus" Though I strongly believe in using manual focus I've learned to never say never.

This DVD was included with the purchase of a Canon HV30. Very useful guide to quickly get oriented to the features of the HV30. Fairly objective and not a push for the product

The DVD provides a good overview of the product, covering all components that are necessary for shooting with manual or automatic controls. Also reveals some menu features that might otherwise take a while to discover. It also includes some tips for shooting/editing video that could be very useful to a beginner.

I watched the entire DVD while I had the camera in my hand and I thought they did a great job with it. The DVD is easy to understand and really goes through all the menus and functions nicely. They covered many topics, some that I'll never use, but it's better to have too much information than not enough.

Comments about MasterWorks DVD: Jumpstart Guide for the Canon HV30 Camcorder:
I can hardly believe that this video shows how to get best video and sound quality from an HDV camcorder because it is obvious that the entire video is made by non (or semi) professionals with its poor sound quality (narrator hits the microphone), poor visual quality, poor acting etc.
How can you show to get best results from your HDV camera with a non-HDV format DVD? How can you teach good stylistic videography with an amateurish DVD.
The entire DVD is worse than the magic knife or "call now" infomercials which we see after midnight. It is hard to believe it is produced by or for Canon.

This was so great. Way better than reading tiny print in the manual. Also, I let a beginner borrow this because it has good, simple explanations about things like white balance and why NOT to use auto focus etc. that are really good for a beginner to learn. REALLY GREAT!

It sure beats reading a manual. Hold the camera in your hand and follow along with the movie. Only thing missing is the popcorn.
Seriously, the manual is a good reference guide, ut the DVD is an excellent learning guide.
