I am a semipro outdoor photographer. I was looking for a bag for 1/2 day trips into the woods with enough room to carry my essential gear. I have a Canon DSLR with 16-35L mounted on the body, a 70-200L, 50mm, a 2X converter, still room for a couple more smaller lens and another body. I am about 5'10" 200lbs. I first tried the Tamrac Expedition 7 and it was very nice with more room than this pack for both lens and equipment. With my gear loaded it was just too heavy. This pack is about 4lbs lighter and it seems to really make a difference.
The flipside feature works pretty well if you need to get to gear without setting the pack down, as long as you don't unzip it too far. It doesn't have the adjustability that the Tamrac bag offers on the shoulder straps, but it seemed to fit me, as is, better than I could adjust the Tamrac pack.
Really not much negative to say about it. It could have a little more room inside but then it would be heavier. The tripod holder didn't work that well with my somewhat heavy Manfrotto tripod (about 7 lbs.) Like the Tamrac, putting that much weight on the back of a pack wants to tip it backward and pulls unusally hard on the shoulder straps. It does work OK to strap that same tripod horizontally accross the top of the pack.
I have taken a few 2 hour hikes in that configuration, you still have the weight, but it is more manageble pushing down on the pack instead of pulling back like using the built in tripod holder does.
Overall the product is very well built and looks like it should hold up well under use. The built in, pull out, water proof cover is a nice feature as well.
I am happy with the purchase, would recomend it to others and would probably buy the same pack again if this were lost.

It's a nice pack and the security feature is great, but it's way too small for serious use, and useless for anyone over 6 feet. A Flipside 600AW would probably be a great product, but this is not useful at all. It's also very hard to open all way, and just generally way too small for any more than a camera and a couple lenses.

I bought this backpack as a gift for my son. He said that it was great. Says it will hold all of the equipment he needs to use most of the time. Much more comfortable to have on when it's loaded than the other backpack he has been using.

This bag is amazing!!! The construction of this thing is really worth the money. I feel like this is the last bag I will ever need. The design of the bag was well thought out. It carries everything I need with room for more. The fit of the bag is amazing, it feels like nothing is there.

I needed a good bag for two cameras. This one is great for that but I don't like the fact I have to open it from the straps side. The straps get in the way. If you can look past that it's a nice bag overall. Many pockets and compartments.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):
This bag is spectacular, the shoulder pads are quite comfortable, it has two straps to tie the bag to you (one on the waist and one on the chest), which keeps the bag from moving while hiking. It is very easy to slip off the shoulder straps and undo the chest strap in order to flip the bag around, I can have my camera out and ready to go in a matter of seconds.
Also, this bag can hold quite a bit of equipment. I have a D90, and carry anywhere from 4-6 lenses, plus two flashes, and some other accessories, and all of it fits nicely in the bag with plenty of room to spare.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):
If I had to choose one word to describe this pack it would be "sturdy". The pack is solid and holds a lot of gear. I hold my Nikon D90 with a 70-200mm lens together, along with a 300mm, 18-105mm, 3 SB-600 flashes and an SB-900 as well. That's just what is in the main compartment. With the additional pocket I hold cleaning gear, sd cards and an array of gels, batteries, id, etc..etc....My only problem with the pack is the way the strap to hold the tripod to the pack is designed. Because it's anchored in the dead center of the pack the tripod tends to hang way away from the pack at the top. My suggestion is to put the straps to either side of the backpack in order to tighten the legs of the tripod against the pack or move the tripod pocket to the side of the pack altogether. I put the con of "hard to access equipment" and it is if you aren't looking for the security aspect. Myself, I'm glad that the gear access is against my back with all the traveling I do. All in all, a great pack - highly recommend.

I was looking for a backpack that could handle two DLSR's. This one does that. I would have liked more storage pockets on the outside and I would have liked the inside zippers that expose the DLSR areas to open more. The zippers stop about 1+1/2 inches to high to allow access the camera I placed at the bottom.

We sometimes have to carry our gear into remote locations as well as distances in cities. This bag is easily carried by people from 5'4 to 6'3". The fact that the important stuff can only be accessed from the zipper side that is against your back makes it secure in urban environments. The hip belt turns out to be quite handy, as you can slip the shoulder straps off and spin it forward to access your gear without setting it down on something.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):
When I first got this bag, I noticed how well it was made. The zippers didn't feel cheap. I took this on a wedding shoot and was able to store: 50D, 5D mark II, 50 1.2L, 50 1.4, 24-105, 70-200 2.8 IS, 580EX II, 430EX II, pocketwizards miniTT1 & flexTT5. I even still had room for another lens or two.
However, at the bottom of the bag it was a snug fit and hard to get my equipment in and out.
I'm about 5'10" and it didn't feel cumbersome or heavy. Quite comfortable when packed full.

I carry 2 DSLR cameras with lenses, a flash, and 2 extra lenses in this pack along with filters, spare CF cards, etc. It is deep enough to hold my Canon 7D with battery grip. Nice compartment adjustment and lots of small storage pockets. If you are looking for a small backpack this is not for you. If you want to carry lots of gear in a comfortable pack system then I would highly recommend this.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):
This backpack was bought for a recent trip to England and Scotland. I needed something versatile for both city and outdoor usage during my 2 week trip. It survived and served me well walking through crowded London, the sunny Lakes, the wind and rain of Edinburgh, and back of beyond in the Outer Hebrides. In between it endured travel by air, tube, train, and car without a hitch.
It comfortably held 1 camera body, 5 lenses, plus accessories in the top half of the main compartment while leaving enough room for my field vest, gloves, gps, chargers, and a couple of spare clothes in the bottom half. I was also able to fit a 10" netbook in the outer compartment. Basically all my gear and doo-dads in a nicely padded, protected pack. The straps across the top for jackets is perfect and handier than you realize. It didn't really rain hard enough to justify the rain cover - the weatherproofing of the bag itself was enough for what I encountered - but the cover is easy to access and fits snugly over the whole pack and whatever you have stuffed in the side pouches.
Despite other reviewers claiming it to be unusable by larger people, I found it perfectly comfortable. The padded straps are especially appreciated. It does ride a little high, and the chest strap is completely useless, but I was able to fix the weight distribution problem by not fastening the pads around my waist. Instead I folded them in on each other and used it as lower back support. This worked well for me. I found that part of the design flawed and cumbersome. Sliding the pack around with the waist strap tightened is annoying in that it pulls at and dishevels your clothing. I imagine the smaller versions of this pack are easier to use as changing platforms via the waist strap, but the 400aw is just too big and bulky fully loaded.
That's it for the bad though. I really, very much like the rear access for the main gear. I felt much safer carrying my equipment around knowing no one could casually unzip the main compartment and lift something. The design reminds me of a soft-shelled turtle. The pack maintains its shape even when empty, though it's not stiff, and when you set the pack down it automatically flips to its back.
Long story short, I've been back from my trip several days now and haven't moved my gear back to the old pack yet. Light, roomy, easy to pack and go, and hit the ground running when you get there.
Very worth it.

I bought this pack to keep all my gear in one place. The size for me is perfect. It holds my 7D, 24-105, 17-40, 60mm macro, 70-200 f/2.8, 2x tc, 430exii flash and accessories. It will easily fit the 7D with the 70-200 AND 2x tc attached. The pack is comfortable when hiking. It does not have very much room for personal items other than phone/wallet,keys etc. You cannot fit a jacket inside. Seems to fit smaller people better. I am 5'9" and find the waist belt sliding up as I hike. I think anyone taller than myself would have more of a problem. Overall this is a perfect pack for what I wanted.

I had a trip right after I bought it so I was very aware of what can this backpack could offer. The compartments have the same standard system, velcro and the capability to create whatever distribution fits better for you. But the most important features for me where:
The ability to load or unload lenses with the flipside system. It is solid, easy and it works well even if you are wearing heavy clothes. Another great feature is the ability to stand by itself, even when it's loaded. And if you wish it can fit a lightweight 15' notebook. Great backpack. The only thing you should be carefull is to load your camera in the top and leave the zip open. I will fall.

I bought this bag to future proof my storage needs. I currently have the Canon 7D, 28mm f/1.8, 24-70 f/2.8 and 24-105 f/4. This bag has more than enough room for those lenses plus more! It will be perfect for when I get the money up to get my 70-200 f/2.8

I am an amateur photographer who loves to spend time in outdoor environments, photographing the interesting scenes and/or wildlife I encounter.
I wanted a backpack that would hold my camera (Nikon D300) and the 4 lenses that I have, and yet not be too big and bulky. The Flipside 400AW backpack is perfect. It easily holds my camera gear with room to spare, and the sternum and waist straps allow me to carry it with ease. I also love having the built-in all weather cover and tripod holder. A big plus for me is that I can stow it under the seat ahead of me when flying. This is a wonderful bag and I highly recommend it for extensive traveling or day trips.
