The Nikon D90 is a winner!
I've shot both Nikon and Canon digital slrs for years and the D90 is wonderful. I shoot a lot of travel and nature images as well as portraits and experimental night shots. I consider myself an advanced amatuer and maybe pro if I could afford the higer end cameras. The color is the most acurate to date and can compete with the professional and more expensive cousins.
I just finished shooting in Monumet Valley, Arizona and New Mexico and can't believe how perfect the color and color contrasts are. When you have brilliant reds against brilliant blue in most cameras without filters, usually the reds turn yellowish, but not the D90's images. It is as if you put a circular filter on the lens. It's fast, handles bright and low light superbly. Hardly any noise in low light and when there is it emulatees film grain. It's kinda like using both a Kodak and Fuji film bias, but in one camera. Also the self cleaning sensor is a great improvement. I was shooting in very windly and some times sand storm conditions and nothing on the sensor, wow!
The 18-105mm lens is very nice too. I usually use the 18-200 Nikon vr, but didn't even take it out. It's a great travel lens. I love the new HD video feature too, it really comes in handy. Before I used my Nikon Coolpix 8800 for video and time lapse exclusively. Being able to use hight quality lenses make the video so real looking that you think its shot with a HD camcorder. The live view is a nice feature and also comes in handy, especially in low light long exposures. The live view focusing takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do it is nice to use. The battery life is better than before, but would recommend purchasing a second battery.
The only things I can say I'm not crazy about is the D90 doesn't shoot time lapse and it uses SD cards and not compact flash or at least a choice of cards. The only other thing would be the doors for the battery and the card don't seem to be very strong, and no springs. I think after a lot of use there may be issues.
I am very happy with the camera and would highly recommed it to a novice, a advanced amatuer and pro's for a second camera. You won't be disappointed!

I may have gotten a "dud" one, because I have only used it for less than a month and it is in the shop. Nikon is a week behind in getting to repairs and now that it is in repair, the part is on backorder at Nikon USA waiting on a part from Japan. Not sure about the quality of the camera at this point. It was slow to focus and seemed to have some fuzzy pixels at edges. It is a lot of money to spend for the time it worked. The problem was the lens contact communicating with camera body.It would not show anything in display, and after reading Nikon D90 blogs, found out is a common problem and that if I extended lens (18-105)back and forth a couple of times it would reset..which worked, but even after a while that quit working.

This camera is very perfect for those who are transitioning from point and shoot to DSLR! It may look very intimidating at first. But once you know all the controls, it is very easy to use! The preset settings are already great! Creating your own settings are so much fun! You can now create those professional photos and be on your way to becoming a professional photographer. The lens kit that it came with is very stunning also! Close ups are very vivid without loosing its clarity. Night mode is like shooting in day light! It captures every color even in the dark. I'm having so much fun with this camera that I go out for a photo shoot almost every weekend since i got this camera!

As a sophomore in college for fine art photography, I was looking for a digital camera that can capture what I want with fine detail and amazing versatility. The D90 is amazing for its price. The detail is amazing and the colors remain vibrant. I use it to take photos, enlarge prints, and everything looks great.
The lens is quite nice as well.

I use several Nikons at work; D70, 80 and 90s. Used daily for portrait, public affairs and medical photography for years and they all deliver outstanding results. Matched with Nikon speed lights and light rings, they are the most versatile DSLRs you can buy. I recommend them to any serious photographer.

Comments about D90 SLR Digital Camera Kit with Nikon 18-105mm VR Lens:
I wanted a DSLR that would be user friendly and yet powerful enough for me to pursue something more than family photographs. The D90 is all that!
It's easy enough to just point and shoot with the Automatic features and yet I have all these options to control the shutter speed, aperture, the ISO sensitivity, etc. And with the advantage of digital photography (versus the actual film), I can shoot and shoot to my heart's content and not be burdened by film development.
The camera is easy to use as a lot of the settings are thumbs away. I had the choice between the D90 and the Canon 60D which is considered a "Professional" camera. The feel of the D90 as well as the construction of the camera has won me over. The 60D is a great camera filled with features. But I'm just a hobbyist. The D90 is more than enough camera for me. The pictures I have taken so far are outstanding and I have yet to scratch the surface of the features of the camera.
The only downside for this camera is that the HD movie is only 720P compared to the newer cameras that has 1080P. This camera was the pioneer of having movies for DSLRs so this part of its technology is a little behind compared to the newer cameras.
If you're a newbie like me, you'll be extremely satisfied to own this camera. The shutter speed, picture quality, screen resolution and the multiple of lens options available, are not too bad for the price of a high end entry level DSLR camera.

The morning I left for SXSW 2011, I came through the superstore to outfit myself for my first time photographing concerts. The D90 has had all the controls and features necessary for everything from casual every day use to demanding indoor low-light situations like small club shows.
In terms of professional use, this is definitely a "learning curve" body - as in, it has everything on it you need to learn the ropes, and advance quickly, but it will also show you where the upper echelon of Nikon's lineup outshine this.

Highly pleased with the responsiveness of this camera as well as the relatively intuitive command processes. I learned on a Nikon FM manual camera and wanted to duplicate the ability to select my f stops and shutter speeds to create close ups and nature photography. I am finding that the Program mode is making my transition to digital a lot easier than I thought. Brilliant photos, captured without a lot of fuss makes my amateur experience a joy.

I thought my D80 was a great camera but the D90 steps it up. Great pictures right from the start. Still trying to figure out how to use the video though.
