I was hesitant about purchasing this lens after reading that some had difficulties with 'soft focusing' and knowing that is not a light lens.
I am glad, tho', that I purchased it after all. I have noticed a considerable improvement with the photographs I have taken. The images it captures during the day are sharp and colour-accurate. With a tripod, it beautifully captures night scenery -- so much so that photographs look almost ethereal.
Image Stabilisation is of great help, too. It could be my imagination but this lens seems to work better than other, lower-quality lenses when using AI Servo for shooting moving targets.
This lens has a nice focal range and its optics are crisp. Because its optics are so crisp with certain focal ranges, it is difficult to tell the difference between non-macro shots taken with this lens and a prime lens at times, e.g, a 50mm (less comparing bokeh).
This lens is adequate for semi-macro photography. But even with a tripod and beautiful lighting, for macro shots, this lens, for example, at 100mm stopped at f/4.0 still cannot compete with images from a lens like the macro 100mm f/2.8 L lens stopped at f/4.0.
This is the first Canon L lens I would recommend to a friend for purchase; the clarity of its images, performance in a range of lighting situations and the range of focal lengths makes it an astute choice for those who do not plan to purchase many other lenses.

CONSTRUCTION: The lens is solid as I expected, showing a very good construction.
IMAGE STABILIZATION: The IS is effective, and I could handle shots at really slow shutter speeds, even at 105mm. You hear a little hiss when IS turns on and off.
IMAGE QUALITY: The colors are great, and the images are tack sharp when properly focused.
FOCUS: The focus is quiet and fast, as expected from a USM motor. Unfortunately, my copy of this lens is showing front focus, and I was really dissapointed with this. I tried the lens with two other camera bodies (T1i and 7D), and the same problem is occuring. The focus point is on the edge of the DOF, and the images are a little blurry and soft when using AF. I really expected more quality control on an L glass, and this is really bothering me (I dont think that this is some kind of compatibility problem, because I tried the lens with three different cameras, getting the same results).
However, I must say that the micro adjustment feature of the 7D seems to solve the problem, after taking some time do adjust it. I didn´t had the chance to explore more this 7D feature, and just did some test shots with my friend´s camera, but the Micro focus adjustment seems to calibrate the focus properly.
OVERALL: This is a nice glass. A great focal length, great construction, great colors and easy to handhold. The front focus issue was the only problem (really annoying), but hopefully I will get a 7D and will calibrate it!
I will give three stars because of my front focus experience, but without this problem I would give five stars to this equipment.

Comments about Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
The most impressive thing about this lens is probably the image stabilization. I was able to push the shutter speed slower at 105mm than I would have ever thought possible. Really impressive stuff.

This is my first L lens. For a general purpose is excelent., very sharp and lightwieght. The F4 constant is not a problem with IS system.

Comments about Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
Awesome general purpose lens. It's L glass so it has the usual: great optics, incredible construction, extra heft, red ring, etc. The USM is quick and silent, IS works fine and the focus ring is smooth.
What's not so rad is the relatively small max aperature if you're used to fast primes. CA is noticeable at the borders, but only if you aren't careful. If you want one lens and need the range, this one is a solid choice. Have an APS-C? You might want to look at the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 if 24mm isn't wide enough.

I am one of those people that spend a lot of time researching and trying things out before laying my hard-earned dollars on the line. This lens was no exception. It took me six months to make my decision - and I am so glad I now have this lens in my arsenal. With an excellent and sturdy build, incredible optics and a very nice general purpose focal range to work with, this is quickly becoming one of my favourite and most-used lenses. Paired with an extension tube, it is pretty well the only walk-around lens I need. CA is a huge issue for me as I use many of my photos for billboards and large displays, and is CA is very well controlled (visible only in harsh contrast primarily at full-frame edges at both ends of the focal length range). Color and contrast are phenomenal and I will no longer buy any lenses that do not have image stabilization. IS gives me up to 50% more images as keepers. I would highly recommend this lens. I should also add that prices at B&H ROCK and service is amazing. If you live in Canada, do not hesitate to use B&H. Shipping costs are amazingly low, equipment is very well packaged and I have never received any item that has been damaged. It is definitely worth it for the price and the product warranty, as well as the service.

Great walk around lens. Get one if you are shooting outside and inside. 2.8 would be nice too but the price and extra weight would negate the benefit.

Great all around general lens. Though this is my first L series lens, I'm loving it! In all fairness, I can't compare this to other L series lenses, however, this lens is clear and sharp. Focuses generally quick. I just got it for a week and shot only 300 pictures with it, so it's still not enough to give an overall review, but thus far, I'm loving it!

Comments about Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
As someone who is a relative newbie to DSLR world, starting with the Canon Rebel T2i and basic 18-55mm lens (which I still maintain are excellent value for money as entry level kit), I recently invested in this lens as an upgrade. The lens feels reasurringly solidly made and heavy while also being quiet and fast.
Many of my photographs are taken in low/poor lighting situations for use in a commercial print magazine, and I've found this lens to be really excellent as well as versatile under different & varying conditions, always producing tack sharp images - unless I've screwed up somewhere. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to someone in a similar situation who is ready to invest in the next level.

Use: Casual Photography on 1.6 body (EOS 60D)
Lens has at tack sharp image, weather sealing, L glass reputation, as well as full time manual focus
However, it is heaver than the kit lens and it may not be wide enough for some uses wirth a APS-C sensor.

I leave this on my camera. I have several other good lens for specific purposes (10-22, 70-200, 17-50 f2.8, etc, but this has become my usual lens for everyday use. Supurb images are the norm.

Comments about Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
This is a great lens. The zoom range is perfect for a 1 lens kit (when that is needed). And if needing to shoot in lower light situations the IS is really nice as well. I have the 17-40 F/4L, but was finding that I was missing the IS as well as the extra length on the zoom. Of course it is not going to be as sharp as a Prime, but it is still an excellent lens. The Bokeh is good as well. The only frustrating point that I have found so far is the lens does not lock. So there is some creeping when not in use.

Comments about Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
This is a great lens. Small disappointment about only going to F/4 but the optics are great and has a great zoom range. Gives me the flexability I need. One other thing is the Image Stabalizing motor is a little loud. Once you know it is the IS, then it is not problematic. The autofocus is silent, though.

Comments about Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
Like everyone else, it boiled down to this lens or the 24-70mm f/2.8L. This was needed as a 'walking around' lens, as in literally walking around, so the extra range and lighter weight was more desireable.
Not a lowlight lens; you will need a flash. However, it's top drawer for everything else. Very sharp and a good value considering the quality of what you are buying. Highly recommend.

Comments about Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box):
I purchased this lens to go with a new Canon 7D body. Have used the lens extensively for the past month primarily for vacation/landscape and family photography. Overall, the image quality is excellent. At first I thought that the images were a bit soft - not as crisp as I'd hoped but still quite good. I learned, though, that the image softness was due more to my unfamiliarity with the autofocus modes on the 7D (operator error!) than with the lens. Now that I have the AF system sorted, the lens performing at my high expectations. The AF is fantastic - fast and very responsive, and the IS mode is very good at low ambient light levels. On the 7D body this lens is on the heavy side, so the IS capability really comes in handy under low light conditions. Overall, I am extremely happy with this purchase and use the 24-105 lens as my every day walking around lens.
