The DR-07 from Tascam is an extremely compact digital audio recorder, ideal for recording interviews, lectures, music practice sessions, and much more. The pocket-sized unit can record high-quality WAV or MP3 files to readily-available SD or SDHC flash memory cards, allowing you to record hours of material and share it easily.
The recorder features a built-in stereo electret condenser microphone with a built-in analog limiter and switchable low cut filter. A 3.5mm stereo mic input makes it easy to connect an external microphone, while 3.5mm line input and output jacks allow you to connect additional equipment, such as a CD player, headphones, or small speaker. The high-speed USB 2.0 port allows you to transfer your recordings to a Mac or PC for editing or sharing.
The DR-07 can be powered by a pair of standard AA batteries, or by an AC adapter (sold separately). The recorder includes an SD card, AA batteries, and a mic windscreen so you can start recording right out of the box.

Choose between 16 & 24 bit, between 44.1ks/s and 48ks/s, mono & stereo, have a "pre-record" buffer, if you have the thing "armed" for a couple of seconds, fits on a gorillapod or equiv, so you can put it on a magic-arm, or ultrapod or one of those snake-extension-thingies that Manfrotto makes, to get the thing *anywhere*...
It's small, slim & light, so you'll never notice the weight ( and it fits in a Lowepro Sliplock Pouch 20, *with* its foam windscreen, if you want to take it with you in your Street & Field rig )
3 levels of boost for the mic + a level-controller rotary, switchable plugin power, nice mics for the money with switchable bass-cut...
*it comes with a foam windscreen* yayy!
You can tell it whether you're using Alkaline/Lithium or Nickel-based ( NiMH or NiCad ) batteries, so then it knows whether the batteries are good or not ( since the 2 categories provide different voltages ).
Handling noise is huge, as to be expected ( no shockmounts on the mics, at all... ).
No remote, as iirc the Edirol HD or HR recorder has ( and the Marantz and Sony ones have wired-remotes, too ), so *they* all can begin recording without the handling-noise, but this one .. just start recording early, and eat the file-size...
You can tell it what filesize to cut from the current recording-slice to the next one, at...
( it defaults to 2GB, iirc, but I prefer 500MB because it makes work more organized .. it goes smaller, too, down to 64MB, if that's gonna work better for your editor/system )
You have to HOLD the Power button down to get it to change from Off to On, or On to Off, which is The Right Way: no accidental poweroffs or dead-batteries!
Auto-poweroff is an option, and it applies to idle-time, not to recording-time ( some gadgets have done it the *other* way -shudder- ), with selectable timeout...
Choosable backlight-time, up to 30 seconds...
The ONLY thing I can think-of that they might have done better, that wouldn't cost anything ( in terms of hardware ) is a 24ks/s or 22.05 ks/s setting for recording meetings/negotiations!
Oh, yeah, it records & plays MP3s, if you want that...
A beautiful little unit, without equal, in the current market: every journalist would do well to use one for interviews, every indie videographer would get better sound from this than from any shotgun or dinky $75 mic, any beginning foley practitioner would be able to *always* have their recorder on 'em...
It's affordable, it's excellent, and it changes the rules.

I bought this unit primarily for over-the-air recording. As it is almost impossible to find an mp3 recorder these days (i.e. an mp3 player with a line in), this recorder fills an important niche. My requirements were few: be able to record a minimum of 4 hours via a line-in directly into mp3 format with at least 128 bit depth. This recorder does that in solid fashion. Recordings sound good and don't skip at all, indicating that the recording buffer is adequate and recording itself is handled smoothly. Here are some observations:
1. Extended recording. The unit won't record more than about 3 hours without running out of battery power. If you need more recording in one session, you need the power supply (which I do and I got), so I have no regrets.
2. I wish I could limit recording to some time (i.e. 4 hours) or specify a start/stop. That isn't possible, though, but what you can do is have the reorder cut the recording every x meg. For me, limiting file size to 256MB gives me 4 hours of recording (3.5 is what I really need) in one file. The additional files I just delete. It's not ideal, but works.
3. Files can be divided on the recorder, but not mp3 files.
4. Recording occurs directly to SD card. Thus, it's possible to fill up the recorder, replace the card, and keep going without having to deal with (i.e. dump) the audio files immediately. Also, the standard SD card can be inserted directly into a computer, so the recorder doesn't have to be linked to a computer at all.
In summary, I took off stars for its limitations, such as being date/time aware, but not using a start/stop time for recordings, not being able to limit recordings, being able to divide files, but not the mp3 files I use. Operation, though, is excellent. I'm fairly happy.

Comments about Tascam DR-07 Portable Digital Audio Recorder:
The unit does exactly what is advertised - you get great sound at a reasonable price. Compact design is very intuitive. Housing doesn't feel quite as substantial as I would like - but then again this is PORTABLE unit. Great for on-camera recording with the new DSLRs. One note - this unit is VERY sensitive and will pick up the slightest noise generated by handling it. You MUST use some type of mini tripod or vibro-isolator for best results.

Comments about Tascam DR-07 Portable Digital Audio Recorder:
This thing is awesome. I was somewhat intimidated by the thick instruction manual, as all I wanted was a simple off/on/record/playback sort of gizmo. I am a drummer in a small band and use it to record our practice sessions. Anyhow, once you figure out how to use it (I sat the manual aside, as it was confusing) it does a fantastic job. The quality of the sound is off the scale. We use sophisticated recording equipment and this little thing sounds nearly as good. The main reason I gave it only 4 stars is the battery life is pretty short and the 2G chip is not nearly (1hr)enough. Do yourself a favor and upgrade with a power pack to eliminate batteries and at least an 8G chip. I uploaded the music onto my computer and burned a CD from it. The bass is a little much, but compensate with your playback system.

I used zoom h2 but had to return it back because you don't have control over gain when you use line in jack, you plug it in to mixer and it just overflows, but dr-07 fixed that problem for me, now I can control the signal that comes from mixer to line in. Little to big in your hands but does the job well.

I use this recorder for my band rehearsals and whether you use It's microphone or line in to your mixer the end result is going to be the same great sound. Bottom line, it works great. I am very happy with this product and for its economic price your definitely getting a great bargain. A+ for me

I used the Tascam DR-07 for my choir practice and to evaluate our Sunday services. For practice- I forward via email a recording of the rehearsal, every member can practice their parts as we were all together. On Mondays, I sent copies of the Mass in order to listen to all the "bad" parts, so we can improve. The price is right! Easy to use! Doble AA batteries. High capacity SD cards, a 4G card will capture months of choir material... Excellent Digital Recorder!!!

I bought this to record audio tracks for recitals, weddings, etc. I was very impressed with the reviews (from B&H Customers)and the price was great here! Well, they are correct, it works very well. I don't know about the battery life. I record about 1.5 hours then change the batteries just to be safe.
On the downside...be aware though, it is EXTREMELY Sensitive to the touch. You will need a tripod (mini one for conference table or light-weight full size for other uses). If you try and use your hand, it will pick up every movement no matter how slow and careful you are.
I have been blessed with a very high level of Computer Literacy. I do a lot of Video Production and Editing. That does not, however, make me an expert on Audio Products. I can only say that I am very pleased with my purchase and the functionality of this item.

Comments about Tascam DR-07 Portable Digital Audio Recorder:
I bought this recorder to use at conferences and for podcasting purposes, after borrowing someone else's and discovering its many advantages: uncompressed audio recording, a decent-sized display, line in and external mic, tripod mount, and much easier controls than my tiny-but-perfect iriver IFP-795 (which won't talk to my new Windows 7 laptop). Not to mention the easy transfer of recordings via SD card.
The only drawback is that it eats batteries, particularly if you are powering an external mic, and the built-in mic is not nearly as sensitive as that on the iriver. But the DR-07 is a good, solid, well-made device in its price range, and I'd recommend getting one before they've all been replaced by the fancier, more expensive Mark II. (That one looks like it will be good, but I don't have any direct experience with it, and it's a lot pricier.) The DR-07 is sturdy enough to stand up to being taken everywhere, but small enough to carry easily, and it doesn't weigh much even with the batteries in it. (And at least it takes regular AAs, so you can buy a huge pack and swap them out, not wait for a proprietary battery to charge.)

I use this recorder, mainly for voice recordings. It reproduces excellent sound. As others have noted, if you touch the recorder while recording, you will get noise. But, if you can leave it untouched, it picks up sound well and has realistic sound. It is easy to transfer files to my MacBook Pro. I am extremely pleased with this product.

Comments about Tascam DR-07 Portable Digital Audio Recorder:
It's compact and doesn't pick up much background noise. The only con is that you need high gain and fairly high input levels (6+) to record at a sufficiently high volume. Works much better with an external mic.
Comments about Tascam DR-07 Portable Digital Audio Recorder:
I can't rate this yet because I'm still trying to figure out how to use it - there are so many things to set up beforehand there's no description that I can find of actually how to separate the tracks on it. Maybe I'm too old for it, I don't know - it LOOKS great and I do know someone who has one and thinks well of it, but it's a puzzle. I would make the instructions way clearer, or at least direct people to a site where they could get clarification. That's why I only rated one star - if I can't get into the box, the gift is not worth much

Comments about Tascam DR-07 Portable Digital Audio Recorder:
I'm a songwriter and I bought this little gadget to use for recording ideas and rough guitar/vocal arrangements. The built in mics work very well and reproduce sounds extremely well. I have also plugged in a Shure SM57 to the mic input and have miked my acoustic guitar and my tube amp/electric guitar with pleasing results. There are only 2 problems I can see with this recorder- and only 1 is a problem for me. The first problem is that the internal mics are EXTREMELY sensitive to handling noise, so when recording with them the Tascam needs to be on a tripod or mic stand (or table, etc). This is not a problem when using an external mic. I always have it on a tripod when recording with the external mics- so this really isn't a problem for me. But you wouldn't want to use it handheld without an external mic. The other thing that's pretty annoying is the battery life is not as long as I would like- I seem to go through a set of batteries every couple of days or so (faster with prolonged use).
All in all, I am exceptionally pleased with the quality of the recordings. It's REALLY easy to operate, and you can't beat the price.
