Sony Remote Commander for Alpha Series & NEX-5, NEX-7 Cameras
This Sony Remote Commander is a home-theater style wireless remote control that enables shooting as well as viewing convenience. it is compatible with Alpha series (e.g. A230, A330, A500, A550, A580, A850 and A900) and the NEX-5 and NEX-7 digital cameras. It allows you to control HDTV photo viewing and trip the camera shutter by remote to put yourself in the picture.

Can be used anytime one wants to be included in the photo. When using 300 & 500 mm zoom lens, on my Sony A500 DSLR, any vibration is magnified in the photo. With the camera on a tripod and using the Remote Commander you do not touch the shutter release button, so there are no vibrations tripping the shutter. While advertized for use on the A700 & A900 Sony Cameras the Remote Commander can be used with any of the Sony Alpha series DSLR cameras.

I purchased this handsome Remote Commander model #RMT-DSLR1 with the nifty red Alpha logo, so that I might remotely release the shutter of my Alpha NEX-5 camera. Of the seventeen functions available, only two are related to the camera, 1)shutter release 2) 2 second delay of shutter; does a mighty fine job as long as you're "facing the camera" (USE FROM THE FRONT ONLY, as designed, use of the remote on the sides or behind camera, is not supported. For all Alpha cameras except a35, a100. Wired remotes RM-L1AM (16 feet, Long) or RM-S1AM (18 inches, short)only has one button, and one function; "shutter release" from any position (wired remote not compatible with the NEX-3,NEX-5). I willingly purchased this beauty, and i'm neither employed by the good folks here, nor paid to produce such notable and worthwhile copy. I hereby confer three stars upon this outstanding piece of marketing!

I pulled the battery seal, turned on my a55, set the Drive to remote control and Bingo, It Works.
I feel the range is adequate, it has performed at around 50ft line of sight without fail. What else should this remote do?

I use it on the nex-5n to take landscapes without touching the camera causing it to vibrate. Unfortunately, only the shutter button works on the nex-5n, but that in no way hinders the purpose.

Picked up an Nex-7 and needed a remote for the photography I do. Looked at a few and decided to get the Sony Commander. Although I really didn't need all the extra buttons the price wasn't that outrageous. Works well behind the camera in most situations.( nice surprise ) In some situations you have to point it in front but not too many
and you don't have to be right on top of it which is handy. All in all Iam very happy with this remote and would recommend it. Buying from B&H was a good choice as they had it in stock and shipping was very fast.

Yes it will take pictures for you but it really does shine when its time to playback those pic or vids on your screen.

Although this accessory is NOT a NECESSITY, it is welcome addition to the A-77, for it makes several things easier to use on the camera. First, instead of using the self timer, one can get into a group photo .. or a self photo using the IR (Infrared) remote control, Second, if the camer is used on a tripod and the BULB feature is applied for longer time exposures the camera can be triggered using this device, and lastly it is mainly handy for controlling the A-77 when hooked up to a HD television for presentations, slide show, HD video.

Does everything it claims. Even remotely triggers the camera through glass. It is IR so it will not work unless the IR receiver in the camera is facing the remote. If you are at an angle such that you are trying to remote the camera and the IR is traveling at an from right to left looking at the camera, it will likely not work.
I used in to review photos on my TV and all functions worked as advertised.
The only limitations from my point of view is that it will not trigger from the back (no claim that it will) and the range is shorter than I would like at about 27 feet.
Great things: It works exactly as advertised.
Not so great: I wish it were RF with a longer range.

Feel and construction are wonderful. Works well, and does trigger the shutter from the front as well as the back of the camera.
I use my Sony NEX-5 camera on a monopod holding the camera at 8 to 12 feet in the air. I was hoping to mount the remote at the bottom of the monopod and trigger the shutter as needed. (I have been using the 10 second timer) I was disappointed that the remote did not work at that angle... I will keep the Remote Commander it works fine for everything thing else, but disappointed that it didn't work for my needs.

Finally...the perfectly-sized remote.
For a SONY DSLR this remote is a MUST-HAVE if you do any type of tripod or long-exposure photography.
SONY DSLRs are generally so light that they even exhibit movement while on tripod in light breeze.
The 2-second delay allows the camera enough time to settle-down before the shutter is tripped.
Most importantly...size. I have had other remotes that are literally the size of a half-stick of gum and are easily lost or mis-placed.
This one's a keeper!
