The Panasonic AG-HMC40 is a camcorder designed to record in high definition on standard Secure Digital (SD) and SDHC memory cards. The camera is extremely portable and lightweight, weighing in at just over 2 lbs. While SD-based camcorders have been gaining ground in the consumer market, the AG-HMC40 has the ability to record AVCHD images at significantly higher bitrates. This enhancement makes the camera's codec more efficient than comparable HD interframe codecs, such as HDV and XDCAM EX. Using H.264 as its compression algorithm the camera can record incredibly detailed images at a fraction of the file size. The handle is detachable and can hold an optional XLR audio system.

Note! XLR option not included.

3MOS Sensor Technology
The progressive 3MOS image sensors record full HD images with an effective motion-picture resolution of 2.51MP. This produces full-raster HD images with high resolution and superb image quality. Because each of the three separate image sensors receives one of the three primary colors of light (red, green and blue), they render more precise images and more faithful colors than the single light-receiving 1MOS sensor.
Sharp Rendering
With a lens that features 13 elements in 10 groups, the newly developed Leica Dicomar is ideal for full HD recording. The new lens system uses low-dispersion glass and aspherical lenses to reduce color aberration and boost resolution. Use of a special multi-coating process dramatically reduces flare and ghosts. The result is a sharp, crisp, beautifully rendered picture with vivid colors, delicate nuances, and exceptional shading.
120x Digital Zoom
Even at the 490mm zoom setting (35mm lens equivalent), this advanced 12x optical zoom lens is free of image degradation. Additionally, the AG-HMC40 is equipped with a digital zoom that instantly magnifies the image by any of three fixed values: 2x, 5x or 10x. Use it together with the 12x optical zoom lens and you get super magnification equivalent to a 120x zoom, without the drop in light intensity that happens when using a lens extender.
Optical Image Stabilization
Because the hand-shake correction is done by actually driving the lens, there's none of the image degradation that occurs with electronic stabilization. You can capture beautiful, high-quality shots even in situations where hand shake is typically a big problem such as when zooming, shooting indoors in dim lighting, or shooting outdoors at night.
Dynamic Range Stretch
A gamma curve and knee slope are estimated to match the contrast of each pixel and applied in real time. When dark, bright, and intermediate shades are all contained in the same scene, this produces excellent gradation for each shade and minimizes blocked shadows and blown highlights. The images that result are enhanced by a visually wider dynamic range.
High-quality 10.6MP Digital Stills
The new 3MOS sensors also combine with Panasonic's proprietary Quad-Density Pixel Distribution technology to achieve a resolution that is equivalent to 4 times the normal level. The AG-HMC40 captures still images with approx. 10.6-megapixel resolution (in still image mode, 3:2 aspect ratio), which approaches the level of a high-performance digital still camera. For example, you can use it to shoot both motion and still images for a website.
Cine-Like Gamma Curves
Drawing on technologies developed for the VariCam HD camcorders for digital cinema, Panasonic has equipped the AG-HMC40 with advanced gamma functions that address seven different shooting scenarios and enhance your creative abilities. This includes the cine-like gamma, which produces the characteristic warm tone of film recordings.
Exceptional AVCHD Image Quality
The AG-HMC40 features the image-enhancing PH mode that Panasonic developed exclusively for AVCCAM camcorders. It delivers a maximum AVCHD bit rate of 24 Mbps (average: 21 Mbps). Designed for professional image production, this mode lets you record 1080/30p, 1080/24p and 720 progressive images in addition to 1080/60i from the AG-HMC40's 1920 x 1080 full-raster HD images.
Reliable Media
Unlike with videotape, there's no need for cueing with the SDHC memory card because recording automatically begins in a blank section of memory. Nor do you have to worry about accidentally recording over important footage. You can delete unwanted clips instantly right on the spot to preserve memory capacity. Editing after shooting is smooth and easy, with no need for digitizing. The tiny SDHC Memory Card is durable, too. Its operating range is from -13-185°F, so you can stop worrying about harsh temperatures or condensation while never having to deal with dropouts or clogged heads.
Shot Mark
To simplify shot selection, you can add a mark to the thumbnail images of each clip. You can then display and play only the clips that have shot marks.
Pre-Record Function
This helps to ensure you always get the shot you want, by letting you continuously store, and subsequently record, images and sounds for three seconds before the REC button is pressed in standby mode.
Fast On-Screen Clip Searching
Image data is recorded as a file for each scene. Thumbnail images and file information are automatically attached to each file to enable smooth, easy confirmation and deletion of files displayed on the LCD monitor.
Easy On-Screen Touchpad
The 2.7", 230,000-dot (approx.) LCD monitor is especially convenient when shooting wide-screen images. Just use a finger on the touch panel screen to start playback, make menu settings, and even focus the camera. You can rotate the LCD monitor 270° for easier viewing when shooting low-angle or other difficult shots. This lets you check the framing and parameter display on the LCD monitor as you shoot.
HD Focus Assist
There are multiple focus assist functions on the AG-HMC40, including both the standard center zoom, as well as a focus bar. Additional focus assists include a face "detection" which "recognizes" faces near the center of the screen and focuses on them.
Manual Focus Ring
The manual focus ring can be used to control the iris too, by switching the Focus Ring (Focus/Iris) selector. Use it whichever way best fits the shooting situation. For example, you can set the camera to Auto Focus and use the manual focus ring to control the zooming. You can also add backlight correction or spotlight correction to the auto aperture function.
Waveform Monitor Display
A horizontal analysis of the input signal's brightness level can be displayed on the monitor. This lets you adjust the standard black and white levels while checking the Waveform Monitor (WFM), making it easy to get highly accurate adjustments.
Interval Recording
You can make automatic, intermittent recordings at set intervals from one frame per second to one frame every two minutes. For example, use Interval REC to record operations at a construction site, to shoot sunsets, or to capture time-lapse recordings of growing plants.
Slow Shutter and Syncro Scan
The slow shutter function uses image accumulation to allow shutter speeds with frame rates reduced by half or more. The accumulation method provides bright-color images with less noise than those captured using conventional gain-up, so you get the higher sensitivity needed for nighttime shooting without illumination. And the Synchro Scan function is ideal for capturing images on monitors.
Optional XLR Adapter Available
The AG-HMC40 comes equipped with a built-in stereo microphone and a 3.5mm EXT, mic-in jack. Adding the optional AG-MYA30G XLR adapter provides compatibility with professional-use XLR terminals for audio output from microphones and Public Audio (PA) systems in studios and auditoriums. Line recording and +48V Phantom powered microphone recordings are possible from the XLR terminals. Featuring two XLR audio input terminals and level controls, the adapter lets you independently switch ch 1 or ch 2 to microphone or line input, with each having its own level adjustment. (Input 2 can be assigned to both ch 1 and ch 2.)
SD Downconversion
The AG-HMC40 is equipped with both component (Mini D4) video outputs and AV output (AV multi terminals), allowing HD images to be down-converted and output as SD images while they are being recorded or played. At the same time, a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio can be selected for side crop, letterbox, or squeeze images. Audio output (AV multi terminals 2 channels) enables a wide variety of applications, such as viewing on an external monitor or SD dubbing.
HDMI
The AG-HMC40 is equipped with an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output terminal for digital transferring of high-quality HD video and audio signals.
Tilt-up Viewfinder
The viewfinder can be tilted upward about 70° and the large eyecup is excellent for blocking out light from the sun and other sources.
REC Check
You can check the end of the most recently recorded clip with one-touch ease.
Last Clip Delete Function
Only the most recently recorded clip is deleted with this one-touch function, adding practical convenience to everyday operation. It can be assigned as a User button function if desired.
Record Meta Data
The date, camera operator, location, title and other information can be added to the video data.

First of all, this is my entry into the prosumer camcorder market. I haven't really been interested in film until I started writing a script for a movie. I knew I needed something better than an ordinary camera for that, and I think I found the right one. The best part about this camera is the variety of capturing modes. It works in 1080 and 720 progressive and interlaced, as well as 60i, 30p, 24p, and the slow motion capable 720/60p mode. The full auto mode of this camera is really well designed. I thought I would be doing a lot of focusing and adjustments manually, but the full auto mode is really very nice looking. Transition between different lighting situations is really smooth, and yet fast enough that you don't get 10 seconds of blinding white. Zoom is nice and smooth. The rocker is somewhat analog, so you can zoom in fast or slow. That is a big big plus for me.

It supports ordinary 1/8 line in, and xlr via the mic adaptor (sold separately). I ended up going with the Rode VideoMic (B&H# ROVM), as it supported the 1/8th inch plug. You will probably also want a shoe Y adaptor so you can have a light and a mic. I went with an LED light (B&H# BELED35D), and that works well with this camera.

For lenses, it supports 43mm threads. It's not some weird proprietary thing. It's something I would expect on a camera that's not quite professional grade. But like I said, this is my first camera.

The depth of field you get out of box with this camera is actually quite amazing. It's not quite the shallow depth of field you would see on a movie in the theater, but it provides a nice effect. You can always go with the Letus35 (B&H# LELT35M43) if you want to develop a more shallow depth of field.

Positives on this camera:
1) Comfortable sturdy weight. It's sturdy enough to feel like a pro camera. Nice weight, it does not feel flimsy.
2) Good selection of framerates.
3) AVCHD codec means full digital operation. No tapes, plus good quality to storage ratio.

Downsides of this camera:
1) When you have a mic plugged in, you have to take the rubber thing out and leave it dangling there. It just looks ugly, that's all.
2) Lack of standard DV resolution. I don't always want to record full HD rez.
3) Floppy and somewhat flimsy rubber eyepiece.
4) Lack of a second accessory shoe.

The HMC40 is superior for it's price point. It has all the professional features you could ask for in such a small body.

For outdoor daytime shoots, it rivals camcorders twice it's size and price. BUT in low light situations, it is one of the worst performing camcorders I have ever used.

The Canon HV and HF series of consumer cameras gave better low light than the HMC40. Even the Panasonic TM700 was better and it has a similar chip set.

The HMC40 has a lot of great features packed inside the ugliest body design ever made. When the camera first came out, I didn't even want to try it because it was so unattractive. But the images speak for themselves and in good light, this camera rocks.

The next model, Panasonic needs to include:
* Bigger sensors - 1/4 ain't cutting it.
* Wide angle lens - at least 35mm if not 28mm, like the HMC150.
* Sleeker body design - the JVC HM100 is what the next HMC should look like.
* Dual SD card slots
* 3" or 3.5" LCD touch panel - 2.7" LCD is garbage.
* XLR adapter included w/ camera, not optional.

I recently sold my HMC40 to buy a Panasonic GH2. Although they are not the same kind of tools, I am able to adapt my GH2 to do all the things the HMC40 could do and much more.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HMC40 AVCCAM HD Camcorder:

I am the video manager for a large summer sports kamp. This is the camera I send out with all of my college age summer videographers. they have varying levels of ability with video cameras. This camera can be used by a novice and has most all of the manual controls a professional would want. Only down side is that some controls are in the menu rather than externally. However, compared to other cameras at this price this has way more manual control. It has three sensors as well. The Sharpness and color are remarkable. Overall, a great little affordable versatile package.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HMC40 AVCCAM HD Camcorder:

This is an outstanding camcorder for the price. The image quality it is capable of producing, provided that there is enough light, can be compared to significantly higher-end camcorders. I refer to this camera as the "Baby Panasonic." In essence, it has a significant number of the features found on their higher-ed professional broadcast gear, but in a form factor that, with no shotgun microphone attached, could pass for a consumer video camera. This can be very useful for gathering footage in areas where management is particularly picky about what gear is permitted inside a venue, or in areas where film permits are the thing to require...

That being said, there are significant limitations that this camcorder has that should not be overlooked. In particular, these limitations may make or break use of this camcorder in terms of it being used in a long-form production. These are:

-Lossy compressed audio, Dolby AC-3 (A/52). - At the highest quality recording mode, the audio is Dolby Ac-3 at 384kbps. To which extent this will hold up after manipulation, compression, eq, limiting, and multiple generations is up for debate. I would recommend using this audio as a sync reference and using an external recorder in uncompressed PCM. Yes, Linear PCM 16-bit, 44.1khz, is a step up from this...

-Very poor sensitivity: This camera needs a lot of light. If you want to use no gain whatsoever, you will need to be shooting either outdoors, or on a lit studio set. I would wager that this camcorder is very much comparable to the 3-tube prosumer camcorders of the mid 1980s in terms of sensitivity. That being said, the gain at +12dB is perfectly usable, provided that you do not crank up such things as the chroma level in your scene file. The higher gain settings become problematic in HD, though, if your final output is standard definition, you may very well be able to crank up the gain (provided that your chroma is not too high.) and have the noise go largely unnoticed.

-Gain cannot be controlled without the aperture being open: You do have full manual iris control, but it is setup so that you cannot dip into the gain until you are wide open. Keep this in mind if you plan on shooting indoors.

-Camera has poor sensitivity, but TOO MUCH sensitivity outdoors on a bright sunny day: This camcorder needs at least another stop of ND filter. I would recommend obtaining external filtering, despite the drawbacks in doing so.

Please keep in mind that these issues are, for the most part, quite minor. Especially if this camcorder is to be utilized for event video, newsgathering, talking head interviews, or just B-roll.

In order to see what can be done with this camcorder, I do plan to shoot a narrative on it. Having shot an entire production with an HPX500, it will be interesting to see how this little guy holds up.

It was a bit of stretch for me going from my flip-cam style camera to this Panasonic. But wow, does it ever make a difference! Just completed my first video for a sales page in my coaching business, and it looks a thousand times better. Crisp video, lighting is great, and audio no longer a distraction. Love that focus and white balance and zebras are available with a click; and Final Cut Pro X imports the files like a dream. Best money I've spent in a very long time.

Instead of spending $1500+ to repair it I bought the Panasonic HMC40.I needed extra power for HMC40 so I got the Anton Bauer Pouch style adapter to work with the Dionic90 from the JVC. Combining the HMV40 with a HDMI monitor, beachkek XLR adapter, a zoom - focus & iris controller makes a powerful and cost effective studio rig. The picture quality is outstanding for the price. Need CS5 to edit "mts" files

Tapeless HMC40 is wonderful in adequate lighting. Must have BeachTek DXA-SLR XLR adapter, zoom, Focus & iris corrollr and Delvcam 7" HDMI monitor for a cost effective studio or field rig. CS5.5 handles the "mts" files . CS3 doesn't....bummer.

The camera is used to video live church worship. So far it performs as mentioned in the spec reviews provided by B & H. The camera seems easy to operate. The only downside is that it has a delicate feel and video quality in low light, is poor. As though, it if noit handle carefully, it might break.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HMC40 AVCCAM HD Camcorder:

Haven't been let down yet by this camera. One thing for sure, though, is to learn all the functions as soon as you get it, or you'll regret it. It has most of the features for shooting video you'd want from, say, a DSLR with video capabilities, but you have to spend a little time and poke around to get to use them.

If you plan on shooting a lot of stuff in low-light, I'd recommend getting an LED panel or something similar to plop on top. As far as video cameras go, it's only average in darkness and doesn't have a whole lot to boost that up well.

Definitely love the onboard audio quality--it's a lot better than what jaded people like myself have come to expect from that sort of feature. And it defaults to 5.1 Dolby whether you plug in external mics or not (note: sometimes. obviously if you change the settings or a couple of other things, it won't.) which isn't even a huge space-waster or a hassle when editing.

It's also very light and handy to carry around. I get broadcast-quality controls and video and audio from a camera that fits in my DSLR bag. One thing, though: definitely splurge on the XLR adaptor if you plan to use external mics even infrequently. It's worth the money. Although, if you also plan on using phantom, go for an upgraded battery, too. I've seen my battery life drop a whole hour--when it only started at three to begin with--because I switched on the phantom. So beware of that.

Construction is pretty solid. I've never felt like it was made cheaply or I felt like it was falling apart, and I've used it heavily for about a year now. The flip-out screen flickers every once in a long while, but not often enough to be an issue, and it's not like it affects the video itself.

Overall just an affordable and great, yet professional, video camera. Do buy if you plan on doing telecom-eqsue video or journalism, or want an all-purpose awesome video camera. Do not buy if you want a theatrical look--it's not built for that kind of thing.

All basics are covered, and there seems to be a considerable amount of bonus features. To me, Panasonic has always been a trusted source. So far, so good.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HMC40 AVCCAM HD Camcorder:

I can't say enough good things about this camera. Coming from an outdated camcorder bought 5 years ago for $800, I am beside myself at this modern day HD prosumer stand-out.

              1) I researched prosumer cameras for several weeks and time and time again, I kept coming back to this well reviewed Panasonic model. Over and over online reviewers praised this camera near the top of their ratings of models for the year.

              2) I've had the opportunity to take the camera to tape my kids at the park and was floored when I inspected the footage at home. I was using Auto mode which basically takes over all the settings for you. Nonetheless, this is the best quality footage I've ever shot and let me tell you, if you are a stickler for quality video, this is the one you want.

              3) The camera feels solidly built and fits well in your hand.

              4) There are so many features and options for this camera, if you are coming from a non-prosumer world like me, you will soon start playing around with the settings and duplicating effects you've seen on tv over the years.

              5) Warranty - Panasonic extends the warranty to 3 years. None of my other cameras ever got that much backing from the manufacturer.

              6) The battery is pretty powerful and at full charge can run more than 3 hours. My previous camera ran for exactly 1 hour on a single charge so this is refreshing.

As others have mentioned, the one downside I discovered was the size of the LCD/touchscreen. I wish it were about an inch larger. Sometimes your hand winds up hitting the wrong area because the button is tucked too much into the corner.

I can still get around this however and would give the camera an outstanding review.

Comments about Panasonic AG-HMC40 AVCCAM HD Camcorder:

I use this for a combination of projects from shooting independent films and TV shows to creating wedding videos. The camera has great image quality in most lighting conditions, but gets grainy in very low room lighting. Typical office lighting is more than enough for a clean image. The color produced by the three chip system is accurate and vivid, in fact better than most of the high end single chip DSLR cameras.
The integrated Leica lens produces crisp, sharp images corner to corner with no perceptible chromatic aberration (a color fringe problem on many lenses of this type). But the lens is not removable, and it's focus-by-wire system is never as good as a true mechanical focus.
The XLR adapter is imperative for film production, as it negates the need for second system audio and all the added chores of syncing audio and video files together in post production. There is a 1/8 inch external mike jack too, but the XLR produces much cleaner audio.
This is a big enough camera to look professional to the average wedding guest, but in a film environment, it looks too small to do the job well. For film work, it lacks the shallow depth of field of a typical DSLR, but produces a much crisper image with less visual artifacting than a DSLR. You can get shallow depth of field, but you need a screw-on ND filter to do it.
The electronic viewfinder and the LCD screen are a weak link in this camcorder, with neither offering crisp enough imaging to obtain critical manual focus. The camera does have video peaking to aid in manual focus mode, and you'll need to rely on it.
In summary, the image quality in properly lit situations is nearly as good as any other professional camcorder in the 2000 to 6000 dollar price range and is up to the task of any TV or indie film production. The optional audio XLR adapter is a must for this type of professional work and it's 300 dollar price should be taken into consideration when comparing prices to other cameras. It is the menu driven controls, the electronic focus and the poor LCD displays that really detract from the otherwise stellar performance of this camcorder and prevent a five star rating.
