This is my first camera post the common point and shoot. I bought the camera (with both the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm lenses - thanks to great prices at B&H) to work on public art projects with my collective...a lot of photography that will be manipulated in various ways, video, documentation of installations and viewers, etc. It's a bit more powerful than what I need, and there's still much I have to learn, but it's an amazing camera and there's a lot of room to grow into it and grow with it. I've recently been using it on video projects for my collective and it's been wonderful - easy to use, takes incredible hd video. Also been using it to make stop motion videos, and I am beyond impressed with the quality of the images, especially at the stop-motion shutter speed. You'll immediately notice the basics - fast shutter speed, extensive pre-set scene settings, reduced blurriness in low light, its capacity to capture intimate up-close images - and then begin to discover everything else. It's light, easy to hold in your hand, and the rotating LCD is a great addition for interesting angles. I got the bag that came with the kit - it's a bit snug but elegant and works for now.

Just jumped in to world of DSLR and was looking for quality photos. Was torn between the D90 and and the D5000. Picture quality same, more features on D90 and is certainly rated higher on build quality, etc. You can't beat the price/value for this camera and lense combo
D90 was was at top of budget so I put money in extra lense 1.8 35mm prime and flash, good camera bag (nikon kit bag not adequate), big fast quality memory card and so far pictures are awesome. 55-200 vr takes great sports shots outside, 35mm prime is awesome inside with no flash. I wish I would have gone with the 70-300 vr kit, cost more, probably worth it and but I can always upgrade later.
I would recommend googling d5000 user's guide and using that site to get started and make adjustments to make your pictures look phenominal. Manual is good, but doesn't boil it down like the site. If you are not inclined to make adjustments, just use auto and the scene menus, that's what's great you have the flexibility.
D-5000 SLR CAMERA w/18-55mm LENS KIT
The D-5000 is a wonderful camera that works quite well. This is a great entry line camera that has great resolution and features. The video capturing function will record 20 minutes of HD video onto a 8GB SD card. The camera also includes the ability to shoot time-lapse photography. The variable position LCD screen is great for shooting pictures from overhead, ground level, or around a corner. The camera is also expandable through other Nikon products such as remote trigger, external flash, and GPS.
The lens is a good basic lens. However, the manual focus ring is at the end of the lens and can get in the way of using a lens hood.
