Responsive and stylish, the Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera represents the 9th generation of the PowerShot G-series and offers professionals and advanced amateurs superior control and imaging capabilities. The coupling of a 10 megapixel CCD sensor and Canon's DIGIC 4 Image Processor dramatically increases light sensitivity while reducing noise. High ISO 3200 capability makes it possible to capture critical shots even under poor lighting conditions. A 2.8" Vari-Angle LCD returns to the G-series allowing users to compose and review images at almost any angle.
Retro and ergonomic, the G11 features classic control dials to change the exposure mode, exposure compensation, and ISO. The "quick control" dial on the rear of the body mimics the design standard of Canon EOS SLR cameras. At just 1.9" thin and weighing about 12 ounces, the Canon PowerShot G11 offers the control of an SLR in the compact and easy to carry body of a point and shoot.

[...]After a ten day vehicle trip and 2,384 images, all raw full size, great results. Many images taken from side window at 65 plus mph. Base setting ISO 200, 800 if needed. Key for shooting out window preset to infinity, use manual focus with speed 500th or higher. No lag at this setting. Many at 250th also good. During 3,200 miles, five states, recorded at 7,000 ft and at sea-level. To date about 20 deleted for tech reasons, missed composition, not using infinity so still focusing as I pushed shutter, heavy rain on windshield, so all a blur. Weather conditions, low 22 deg., snow, fog, ice, black ice, rain, winds, were above clouds at 5,000 ft, ocean spray from wind and waves. Most recorded images are what I saw on the LCD with manual settings. Images in Snow show blowing snow on road and in air. Ocean has crisp waves breaking with Golden Gate Bridge in background and fisherman foreground, sharp all parts of frame. The light fog also is clearly present in the image. Used SanDisk Extreme 30MB/s 8 GB cards resulting with no wait if next images was in short time. I had review set to off so no wait. The Image Stabilization was set to "Shoot Only". The 8GB card recorded 754 images, complex subjects did produce lower amounts on two of the five cards I used, got around 650 images. Battery life is good, used 1.5 batteries for 754 images, 2 hour charge time each night. Camera was on my hip at all times so recorded many aspects of the trip a full size DSLR would not allow. I could place G-11 on a surface an frame subject using flex LCD and record scenes and no body know the camera was present. My Canon 40D did not come out of it's case the whole trip. Sunsets using a Manfrotto 680B Compact Black Monopod with remote and the G-11 resulted in outstanding images, and many raves from people I sent via e-mail at 25% of original. I have the G-11 three months and only con is with big hands sometimes, like 3%, if moving fast the flash position on the wheel is activated as finger move on back of camera lining up the image, so have to turn flash off. Note my flash is off 99.9% of the time, only on for "must"have image in very very low illumination. I do take no flash images first, than with flash. Also recorded a wedding and reception, the main reason for the trip.I was just a guest, a local pro was hired to record the wedding, I mainly recorded the cousins all 70 plus years not likely recorded by the hired pro. [...] My next adventure is using G-11 with the +10 close-up lens and the Conversion Len Adapter LA-DC58K from Canon, real use is for telephoto. If hotel or motel TV had RCA connection would view on TV after dinner using Canon supplied cable. I do not have laptop. All images are sharp on my 24 inch computer monitor in raw state before any adjustments. I also use the LCD tilt function by placing the G-11 on the monopod with the remote connected and raise the camera high above me to get high angle views, with LCD tilted down for framing images. I use the G-11 for assignments and also for FUN images. Works very good in low and very very low illumination conditions. Have fun shoot images, experiment, and get out of the box. This is a still camera, if the people want to record video's get a real video camera Canon makes a number of them large and small, like the FS series fits in a pocket. I have used the video mode in selected applications, to show operational movements, saved lots of words, as it was handy and did not want to setup the big video gear. Great Camera enjoy. wrk

I wanted an in-between camera: an upgrade over control and image quality from
my little Pentax point-&-shoot, but not something as bulky as my D90 with its
backpack full of lenses and flashes.
This camera is solidly built, with quality knobs, buttons, and a bayonet mount
around the lens for other lenses and filters, or a microscope mount which I
will eventually buy.
The image quality is excellent, with little barrel distortion or pincushion,
nice and sharp edge to edge, and almost no discernible chromatic aberration.
Manual settings are as expected: Av, Tv and full manual. The reduced megapixels
results in OK noise control, and in-camera noise reduction is very effective.
However, you can't turn noise reduction off, and it definitely blurs the
images. Thank goodness you can go to the RAW and work on it yourself.
PROS:
-an exposure lock that lets you adjust aperture after locking the exposure
-a manual exposure "find" that will set a correct shutter speed for your chosen
aperture (or vice-versa)
-a digital neutral density filter for very bright situations (skiing) or macro
flash use
-ability to stop down during macro flash so the flash doesn't blast out the
subject;
-exposure compensation and flash compensation are independent, allowing for
creative lighting options
-Exposure bracketing with settable exposure range, very nice
-RAW files! Allow creative manipulation afterwords. Very nice.
CONS:
-minimum 2-sec review time-- too long! Why is there no 1-second choice???
-flash slow sync is not available on all mode-- only P and Av modes. Why??
-Manual flash setting is not available in Tv or Av-- why not??
-Manual setting only is available for flash in Manual mode-- why?? TTL fill
flash is very handy and should be a no-brainer option.
-manual flash has only 3 powers: the minimum lights nothing beyond a foot, the
next setting seems to be about 70% power, the next is 100%. There should be at
least 5 settings, preferably infinite.
- Using flash sets white balance to "flash", even if you've got it set to
something else. Thus if you use fill flash indoors or underwater, the white
balance is way off.
-Fixing exposures across multiple photos doesn't work (should be available in
P, Av, and Tv modes)
AND THE DEAL KILLER:
-In Av and Tv modes, there is NO LIGHT METER READING! There is information only
on the aperture (Av) or shutter (Tv), you have NO IDEA what the other value
will be, or whether you're over or under the exposure range. You can half-press
the shutter to figure out what the other value will be, but you still don't
know if you're over or under exposure range. The only way to find out is to
press the star button, which temporarily gives you a nice ribbon at the bottom
with shutter & aperture (like in Manual mode)-- but it disappears after a
second or two. Aaargh! There should be an exposure meter at least, like along
the right hand side of the display, or a ribbon at the bottom. Why! Didn't!
Canon! Do this!!! It makes Av and Tv nearly useless for taking photos. And yet,
you're locked into them for TTL fill flash, or you have to use Av if you want a
slow-sync fill flash. Try to figure out how to underexpose by 1 stop with fill
flash to compensate: it should be a breeze, but it's nearly impossible the way
Canon has set it up.
SUMMARY: This is a solid camera with great features, a great lens, and
reasonable noise for a small sensor. It is bulky and heavy, there's still a
fair amount of noise due to the small sensor, and the learning curve is steep.
But the real disappointment is the very poor programming choices for Tv and Av
exposure control, and the crazy flash setting choices. I am pretty disappointed
in how poorly thought out these features are.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera:
I've always had one point-and-shoot camera and one bigger "good" camera. The G11 has it all, it's small enough to bring to parties etc and good enough to take great pictures. It's also a great camera for anyone who's just getting into photography.

I was replacing a G3 which was a wonderful camera for over 8 years. I am very pleased with my new purchase. The basic features are easy to use and it takes beautiful pictures. I use my camera very often, mostly for events and pictures of family and active children. I also use it for landscape photos and have been pleased with the results so far!

I purchased this camera as a replacement for the Canon G9, which I had and enjoyed for many years. Canon outdid themselves with the G11, the photo quality is improved from the G9 and the features seem easier to use than before. I love how the LCD screen turns inward when the camera is not in use.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera:
I'm a professional sports and outdoor photographer shooting with Nikon equipment. On the recommendation of another photographer, I bought a G-11 for home use and as a backup. With the ability to adjust exposure, shoot RAW and jpeg simultaneously, adjust flash, and capture Youtube-quality video, I've found that I don't lug the Nikon SLR kit around except on commissioned jobs. The little G-11 does just about everything I want it to do. Of course, I wish it would focus faster. But that is about the only difference between that and my SLR.
I recommend this camera highly. We have five point and shoot cameras in the house as last count. The G-11 and a little bit of photo knowledge blows away the others.

I travel on business a lot and I always like to have a camera with me. However, my full size DLSR and lenses are too heavy and bulky to carry everywhere. The G11 is perfect for me as it has DLSR level controls in a very compact package and can shoot raw images.

When you're going somplace and aren't planning to be the photographer and don't want to carry your DSLR and lenses, but might want to catch a photo op when it happens. This is the camera. You will have to be careful with the buttons and controls as they cram them onto a limited amount of real estate. But, that's why I bought the camera. It's a little more than a point and shoot. But, can be one if that's what you want.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera:
I wanted a the highest level point and shoot for the money. I can still carry it in a small bag, but the quality is far superior to any other P&S I've used -- mainly because of the ISO control. I also love the moveable screen -- good for shooting video or setting up a timed shot. So far, it's worked great for outdoor scenes (fall leaves), portraits and random shots of friends hanging out. HIghly recommended.

This camera has everything that I need in addition to being travel friendly. I own a Cannon EOS Digital Rebel, and made the decision to purchase this camera based on the fact that I can shoot in RAW, the ease of handling, and the ease of traveling with such a compact camera. I have found that I have not had to scrafice quality, and surprisingly, I have taken more photographs because I can keep this camera on my person. It is a great camera for me.

If I don't have my Canon 5D Mark II with me this camera is a good alternative. I keep this camera with me in the car so when I don't have or want to carry the 5D I still can get the shot. It's light and small enough to just carry around. I like the fact that I still can work with RAW images from this camera and use a mode other than auto everything.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera:
My main cameral is a Canon 5D MkII. I bought this for family snapshots and events where the big camera would be too obtrusive. I have had the camera about a week and have taken about 300 photos. It's small and easy to carry. Works very well up to ISO 800. At ISO 1600, the firmware noise reduction is a little heavy handed and reduced the resolution more than I would have wanted. The result is very pleasing, but I was dissatisfied with the loss of resolution. I had much better results shooting in RAW and doing more juditious noise reduction in Photoshop. Overall, a very capable little camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera:
I did a lot of research to find the perfect camera for my needs and the g11 came closest. I've been using the camera for over a week and am very pleased. There are two things I wish were different: I'd love to have a tighter zoom and the way the buttons are configured it's too easy to press unwanted buttons when holding the camera in order to use the lcd. Otherwise, it's a great camera. One of the main reasons I got it is because of the swivel lcd screen and because it has a viewfinder which is impossible to find anymore.
The shoulder strap that comes with it is flimsy.

I'll be purchasing this camera for my mom for Christmas.
