I've had an Asus EEE 1000h ever since they came out, but it was getting to be time to upgrade it -- it was not a bad little machine, but the Atom processor was a bit underpowered, and that misplaced right shift key always did bug me.
Man, netbooks have really come a long way. A quick run through, comparing it to my previous netbook:
Screen: 1366x768 vs. 1024x600 is almost twice as many pixels as the previous generation of netbooks, and it makes a big difference. The screen is glossy, which is kind of annoying, and I think the contrast is a little lower than on the 1000h, but nonetheless it's really nice.
Keyboard: Full sized shift keys on the Acer! This far outweighs almost anything else. The smaller cursor control keys are kind of pain, but I'll get used to them. Feedback is not as nice as the Asus but still pretty decent -- I can type full speed on this keyboard.
Touchpad: Touchpad is good enough; at least there are two mouse buttons, which is one of the things I really wanted. It's multitouch, but the drivers are a little choppy with the two finger scrolling -- but it hasn't bugged me enough to try and fix it, either. The two finger to zoom in and out is surprisingly handy when browsing, to be honest, and I'm using it all the time.
Wireless: Wireless on my Asus 1000h was always a little glitchy at home (and would sometimes cause my router to reboot, for whatever reason), but was fine at work and at Starbucks. The wireless on the Acer 1410 works much better, and I haven't had any problems.
Speaker: I frequently watch movies with the speakers on. The speakers seem to be just a touch softer than the Asus 1000h, but still pretty good. There are some tweaks you can do to get the speakers to sound louder.
Processor: The new ULV chips are everything that Atom wanted to be. With the Acer I've been able to a) run Ubuntu under virtualbox, b) play full-screen 480p Hulu, and c) play full-screen Netflix, and it hasn't stalled out on anything. Additionally, the Asus 1000h would bog down when scrolling in Firefox (seriously), whereas the Acer handles it fine.
I specifically looked for an Acer with the SU2300 (dual core) instead of the SU3500 (single core, slightly faster). Virtualization was disabled in the BIOS I got, but an update to a later BIOS enabled it without problems.
The machine only starts up the fan when doing flash video -- fan noise is not too bad and significantly quieter than the Asus 1000h. The computer itself does not get very warm at all, which is nice.
Battery Life: Hard to say, but looks like 5-7+ with this machine while browsing the web, whereas I was getting about 4 with an Asus 1000h.
Operating System: The Acer came with Windows 7 Home Premium. Aero looks slick and the OS performs well — I have no complaints.

Picked one up on my way to Australia. Lasted 4 days and then would not boot up. Blank screen with no bios, nothing..
I am now in Australia and Acer will not help me at all. Not to mention their technical support is basically non-existant.
Did not explain what the problem was or what they think it could be, just send it straight to the depot.. A little difficult to do from the other side of the world..
BUYER BEWARE, STAY AWAY FROM ACER!

This was an upgrade from a Gateway LT3100 and WOW the difference. For [$] this is an incredible lil' machine, I refuse to call it a netbook, it runs too good for that title. Too bad these are so hard to find with the SU2300 cpu now. I get a "real" 5+hrs battery runtime with wifi on, not bad. My only gripe(to ALL laptop/netbook makers) is STOP MAKING THEM GLOSSY!! Get one if ya can find one.

I waited a long time to make the plunge into the laptop world. I finally knew I needed one and Christmas was the perfect time to ask.
After doing a lot of research this little computer seemed to hit the perfect sweet spot of price, performance and portability. It is actually quite peppy. I am not doing anything too intensive on it but I have yet to see any slowdown in over a week of use.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the market for a solid laptop at this price point.

I know it's an extra bit of money, but it's totally worth it for the incredibly long battery life and the Windows 7 package. Plus it's aesthetically pleasing. So that's nice. I'm very happy with my purchase. I'm having a little bit of trouble getting used to the condensed keyboard, but it's not too bad.

Comments about Acer Aspire AS1410-2936 Notebook Computer (Ruby Red):
I really love this notebook. Small enough to carry around, yet big enough to see clearly. I hardly ever used my old laptop, because it was so big and bulky. Now it seems that I find new uses for this notebook everyday.
Being a dual core processor instead of an atom processor, and having Windows 7 Premium (not starter edition) clearly makes the difference. I have watched videos from YouTube and hulu.com at full screen, and have not had any problems. Common games have no problems playing, but I am not into heavy graphical games. Computer boot time, program opening, and surfing the web are extremely fast.
The battery life is very good IMO. It last about six hours, which is plenty for me. I don't even need to bring the power supply when I take it with me, making it an even smaller product to carry. And at a little over three pounds I take it everywhere.
Right now I am reading an ebook that is a pdf file, and find that I can read in portrait or landscape mode with Adobe Reader. In portrait mode I can read a whole page at a time by either holding it like a book or turning in on its' side on a table. Who needs a dedicated reader?
I find that typing on this keyboard seems to be a better experience than on my full size keyboard. I can type faster with less mistakes.
If you are deciding between this and the smaller netbooks, do yourself a favor and purchase this notebook. It will run circles around the netbooks. You will be happy you bought this when you hear the netbook owners complaining of jerky videos, and slow performance.
I am very happy with the Aspire AS1410-2936. It does exactly what I hoped it would do and more. If I had it to do all over again I would definitely buy the Aspire again.

I use this netbook quite often at home and as a tool while at work to access the web. The small size is perfect for my needs to carry around in my case. I love the rich red color and the fast speed. The battery does last at least 5-6 hours depnding on how you use it. I'm very happy with this netbook and highly recommend it to anyone it's very light and durable and is priced very low compared to other netbooks. Go for it!

I've dragged conventional laptops around for years, all over the world, and I'm tired of lugging bricks. I want a laptop that's small enough to carry but big enough to use. The Acer 1410 is exactly that: a breakthrough in combining portability with power.
This laptop has many characteristics of a netbook, including light weight and moderately long battery life.
The advantages over an Atom-powered netbook are significant. The dual-core CPU keeps up with Hulu's Flash video without stuttering. The 11.6-inch screen is bright, sharp, and provides plenty of room for multiple windows and multiple applications.
There is a very similar model that has a single-core CPU and a 250-gig hard drive for the same price. Go for the dual-core.
This laptop came with Windows 7, which I ran just long enough to upgrade the BIOS and install Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala).
Audio required a software upgrade; afterward, everything worked great, including the webcam, audio, wireless, etc. I added Skype and Google Chrome to the software included with Ubuntu; both are well supported. Overall, I'd rate this as a great choice as a Linux laptop.

The AS1410 is a great deal for its price, being much faster than a similar-priced netbook. It is light and has decent battery life. The keyboard is full-sized and comfortable. Overall, it is a good compromise between weight and computing power.

Light enough and small enough, I use an old purse as a carry bag. So much easier than dragging around a 16". Can't find any 11" skins yet, 12 " are hard to find.
Battery life is at least 8 hours. (external drive and mouse runs off USB power) I put in the 4M RAM upgrade and now surfing the net is almost instant. Watching video is way better than my old system. I had a hard time with 64 bit on-line and had to run 32 bit IExplorer to get Flash player to run on certain sights

1 month into using at and so far this notebook is great. Its not too small that you can barely use the screen, and still small enough that it feels like a small travel laptop. Its dual processor lets it pack some punch and I was able to run games on it and movies without any issues. For its price I think its a great powerful little computer.
On the minus side there isn't much space between the keys so when you're typing its very easy to hit 2 keys at the same time on accident.

This is the perfect size and plenty speedy for basic computing like browsing, email, and word processing. Just what I was looking for: a light weight computer with a real keyboard, a real processor and a screen that doesn't seem like a total compromise. This dual core Celeron processor is surprisingly speedy. I've streamed Netflix movies using the HDMI port to my TV and it's worked just fine. I can't comment on battery life as I usually use the power cord. I'm very pleased and give it two thumbs up.

Comments about Acer Aspire AS1410-2936 Notebook Computer (Ruby Red):
This thing is light and thin, and comes with a full sized keyboard too! We mainly bought the laptop for University work etc. This laptop is amazing, not only is it able to play 1080P content flawlessly. The resolution for this laptop is 1366x768 pixels. That's 720P worthy right there. The screen is small but not too small to read text. It's also crisp and very clear. With an added HDMI port, you can easily turn this laptop into a HTPC if you wanted to! just remember there is no BLU Ray drive, so you'll need to buy one. But for portability sake, it doesn't need one. I know i don't miss it since I don't use DVD's anyway. It also zooms through every application thrown at it. I use an opera browser and with 20 tab's open, there was no slow down.
There are some drawbacks though, currently, it can't run HD Youtube because the flash plug-in draws its power from the dual core CPU instead of the 4500M GPU like it would on non flash video files. Battery life was lower then expected.
Even with the lowest brightness and set on power saving, it only managed 6 hours. It could be because I didn't charge the thing when I first turned on the laptop, but neither the less, it's quite average. The glossy plastic and glossy screen are real fingerprint magnets too. Not to mention dust. The sound isn't great either. With the sound maxed, it's still quite hard to here anything on those tiny speakers located below the laptop. Headphones are highly recommended. In built webcam isn't the best, but it does what it can on the budget. The keyboard wasn't really to my liking, the flat keys seems a bit harder to type with compared to normal keyboard with concave keys.
If you think the 6 hour battery life with the ability to play 1080P content, then it's a great laptop for any student.
