The TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod from Tamrac is constructed of sturdy, high-quality aluminum with a heavy-duty ballhead. Weighing in at just 11 oz (312 g) and measuring 15" when folded, the ZipShot is highly portable and can fit almost anywhere. It can support a DSLR with a lens, or a camcorder up to 3 lb (1361 g).
There are many situations when a tripod is needed to capture a great shot: a fleeting photo opportunity of the perfect sunset or the family photo with everyone in it. The problem is that most tripods are heavy, difficult to carry and slow to set up which causes many missed photo opportunities. This tripod is a great remedy. When its two red shock cords are released, the Zipshot springs open in seconds to a height of 44" (112cm). A single release lever of the included ballhead allows the camera or camcorder to be positioned at any angle so vertical and horizontal shots are easy.

I got this last week. Simply AMAZING!
The tripod sets up in 5 seconds, almost fits in a coat pocket, is pretty stable when set up correctly, the ball head bends 90 degs, and collapses in 10 seconds. If you're looking for something handy, there's none other like it!
I read an earlier very negative review. It was absolutely unfair because He doesn't even own one. I know this because the tubes are made of aluminum and not fiberglass as he described it.

This tripod is not as sturdy as I would have liked when fully extended and it is only usable, when fully extended. I added a few rubber bands to the legs that did not have factory installed tie-downs and turned it into a usable tabletop tripod. The factory should consider putting the tie down devices on all three legs and make this standard as it doubles the usuability of the device at very little extra cost. It is very compact and easy to set up which is why I bought it but it is not as stable as I had hoped it would be.

This is the easiest tripod I have ever owned. You take the two red ties off and the thing opens itself up every time. To me ease of use and the fast that it is so light mean that I will actually have the tripod with me and thus use it when taking pictures. No more lugging around a heavy tripod that takes minutes to set up and collapse. The zipshot opens in 3 seconds and closes in less than 10 seconds. This is a great accessory for any photographer - professional down to amateur point and shooter!

I haven't used it in the field yet, but it appears to be quite sturdy and would have no problem holding a smaller DSLR with a kit lens. (I wouldn't put a 5D with a telephoto on it.) I do a lot of backpacking, and being able to use a "real" tripod will be a treat. The only problem is you can't shorten the legs, but given the 11 oz weight, it's not much of a criticism.

Comments about Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod (Black):
I bought the ZipShot as a travel tripod, and it seems to perform well under situations that are not difficult. I just keep it in the car or my backpack and when I need a tripod it is there. It will even fit in a coat pocket comfortably.
When it folds, it folds to the size of a tabletop tripod. It is light. It takes literally 3 seconds to expand. The legs come together in a compact formation and can be used as a monopod as well.
Haven't experienced it, but if you ever end up in a situation that you were not supposed to drop a tripod and get caught, it will become a monopod instantly.
Keep in mind that it is what it is. It won't perform well with heavy loads, uneven surfaces and strong winds, but will save you in the occasions that you wished you had a tripod.

Comments about Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod (Black):
This tripod is extremely light and easy to pack which is the reason I bought it. On reasonably level ground and with no wind it allows for slow shutter speeds and night shots while I'm traveling. This is not what I'd call a stable platform in any way but with no wind it makes shots possible that otherwise wouldn't be.

Love the TR406 zipshot. I used to bring my wife's profesional tripod on our travels. And having to carry my camera bag, the tripod, and sometimes my wife's purse, I feel like a camel at the end of the day.
Having a light weight, quick setup tripod was something we needed, and after seeing the Tamrac Zipshot on a magazine ad, I knew this one was a keeper.
I would have given it a 5 star overall rating except for the short height and the lack of a quick release. I bought a SLIK mini quick release here on B&H and the height is definitely workable.
I wouldn't recommend the TR404 which is shorter than the TR406. An optional Tamrac bag is also available that is M.A.S. compatible.

This is a extremely lightweight Bungie cord tripod. Seconds to open and close. Best use is for P&S cameras in non-demanding situations. There is no height adjustment. Weight is under a pound. See the B&H video.

Traveling with camera gear is a challenge, especially when you don't want to check your bags (my son's was just lost.....permamantly). How nice to have a small yet sturdy tripod to take along without taking up much room or weight.

Comments about Tamrac TR406 ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod (Black):
I'm mostly concerned about keeping my gear to a minimum - will rarely change more than one lens, don't really use strobes unless the situation is in dire need, etc. Absolutely hated carrying a 3-6lb tripod if I wanted a steady shot!
Zipshot filled a beautiful niche - weighs next to nothing and takes up minimal space, but allows for steadier long and dark exposures. As has been said, has it's limitations - wouldn't use it on uncertain terrain or inclement weather, isn't the most fluid for certain adjustments, but many times better than some awkward handheld moments.
Had a massive tripod before this guy that was rendered useless - it only sat at home because I couldn't be bothered to take it anywhere!

I use it strictly for a digital slr.
Small compact, fits in my motorcycle saddle bag.

I bought this tripod because I needed something ultra portable for my camera bag. It works well for quick shots where added stability is needed. The tripod sets up in a matter of seconds and is just as quick to break back down.
The only concern I'd have is how stable it is. I wouldn't be eager to put a nice camera on it on a windy day. But for quick candid shoots it's wonderful.

This tripod is quite portable, suited for use
on a long trip when space is at a premium. It
opens easily, and automatically sets it legs
for immediate use. It holds a good sized dslr.
To break it down, one just extends the elastic
cord that unites it and it folds almost as easily
at it opened. Highly recommended.

A bit pricey, but a great match for our tiny new Sony NEX-3 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera and Panasonic SDX1 camcorder. Watch the video to see how easy it is to deploy and fold. Best thing about it is light weight and compact size when folded.

Saw this tripod demonstrated at PDN Expo in NY and bought it for use with compact still and video camera. It is exactly what it purports to be - cheap, fast, ultra-lightweight and relatively sturdy. Hang your camera bag from the head for extra stability if needed. I've even used it (indoors) with my Canon 5D and a remote - not ideal (wait 10 secs for it to stop wobbling before shooting) , but o.k. in a pinch and steadier than I can hand-hold at 1/15 sec.

I use it for my Nikon CoolpixS1000pj and it is perfect. It is great when I want to shoot video but the indispensible use is when I want to project video on a screen. It can go anywhere, lightweight and easy to use.

Keep in mind it doesn't replace a good solid tripod. That said, it's perfect for travel or those times when you want to lighten your equipment load without giving up too much.

This little thing looks so fragile, but I have to tell you, I put a Nikon D200 on it. I was skeptical at first, but it held it fine. With a big lens, I have to set the camera a little high to compensate for a little settling, but no big deal. I admit, I use it for a compact camera most of the time and it is just a super for that. It sets up before you can say boo and is very light to handle. I would definitely recommend this tripod to anyone wanting a fast setting. light weight tripod.
