ZEISS Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 Reviews

Great Lens - Minor Precaution 58mm filters

I like this lens, no cons. But there is a bit of glitch about lens filter compatibility: despite the answers to my question in the Q&A here, this lens hood will not slide over any standard filter. With some filters the lens hood cannot be removed or attached with the filter in place because some filters have a larger OD than the bayonet ID of the hood which will not slide over it. I have no other lens that use a 58mm filter and had to buy specifically for this lens. After buying a couple of cheapies that did not work, I bought a Zeiss UV filter. Good news, it works perfectly with this lens/hood combo. Certainly other brands will work too, but it might be a trial and error process as the filter OD is never listed in the specs. Now I will look for ND and Polarizing filters that will work. I use this lens outdoors so a hood is essential, and I suppose I could just by a cheap 58mm screw-on hood instead, but that sort of defeats the purpose of this bayonet mount hood that can be stored on the lens when not in use. (Full disclosure: I am not a verified purchaser on this one. I waited and waited and waited for this lens to be back in stock, no other retailer had one either, so I finally bought a used one. My Zeiss filter is a B&H purchase as B&H is always my first choice. )

I can not believe Zeiss can put their name on that. I have some first gen rokinon's primes that ate sharper and shows significantly less CA than this lens at the same aperture. Lenses I bought nearly 10 years ago for less than 400$ each. I have to return this Zeiss and will lose money over custom and shipping. This is an absolute disaster. Ah and the T* Coating is a joke on this product the flare is ugly at best and not well managed at all. Paying this much for a lens that render nice images at f4 or higher is nothing less than a disgrace toped with a giant ripoff. DO NOT EVER EVER EVEN CONSIDER BUYING THIS USELESS PIECE OF GARBAGE.
