While at Photokina, I saw this device and I was amazed at its holding power for a full size DSLR and 24-70mm f/2.8 Pro Lens. I was even more amazed after I took out the quick release plate and was able to mount my Really Right Stuff camera "L" bracket into the receiver clamp with no fuss! I imagine that Kirk, Arca Swiss, and Wimberly plates may even be able to fit the clamp on the ball head. The ball head can also be removed from the legs, and other ball heads can be mounted in its place using a 1/4" or 3/8" (with reducer) stud. Not to mention, the clamp can also be replaced on the ball head, maybe a RRS quick release would even fit. The legs are nice and strong and wrap tightly around objects and hold the shape with lots of latteral forces applied. I think the only thing I can say bad is that the legs could be 1/3 to 1/2 longer than they are. That would give you more options for afixing it to stuff. Oh, the ball head, clamp, quick release plate, and legs, are all metallic and feel strong. Now I wouldn't trust this with a 400mm f/2.8 lens, but the 70-200 f/2.8 is doable as long as the mass is centered on the tripod. As an owner of Gitzo Tripods, Wimberly Heads, and Really Right Stuff ball heads and accessories, I can trully say that this unit is in the same league; just not rated for as much weight! I haven't used this extensively yet, so maybe time will tell a different story.

Overrated product. I had a terrible time adjusting the camera since the ball head has a tendancy to get stuck. Even hurt my finger once in the process. The ads make it look like this tripod can help you take shots where regular tripods fail. Infact, the opposite is true. If you do not find a pole or railing nearby you will not be able to take a shot. Unless you fancy climbing a nearby tree (if you find one). The tripod legs can be twisted to grip railings, thin poles, etc, but will not always be stable. When I was trying photograph the NY skyline from Exchange Place (JC),by hooking this up to a nearby pole. A suspicious policewoman walked over to question me :) If the poles are thick it is not easy to get this thing to stay. Overall, investing in a standard tripod is a lot wiser. Gorillapods may suit point and shoot owners (relevant versions are available), but for SLR owners with zoom lenses it falls short.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus/Ballhead X Bundle (Black/Gray):
This Gorrillapod Focus is great for on the go when you don't want to carry a lot of gear, you can place it on various things to have a secure on the spot tripod. The joints are stiff and articulate very well, the ball head is smooth and locks tightly into place. The only concern I have would be using anything close to the 11lb. rating weight.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus/Ballhead X Bundle (Black/Gray):
I bought this product to mount a camera or lights in 'difficult' places that needed to be used - because the legs can be twisted, they can be set up on rails, mounts, stands, tripod legs, rear-vision mirror mounts and even guitar necks. Would like slightly longer legs - but this would put the price up. The ball head mount is a must and supports a canon D5 and 70-200mm L zoom lens - but do keep the profile low (don't use weighty accessories on top of the camera body). Love this product and definitely recommend it.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus/Ballhead X Bundle (Black/Gray):
Pretty solid device but still can be struggling to withstand 7D with 24-70mm 2.8 L lens canon. The joints closest to the ballhead would sometimes move apart due to the camera's weight. place it slowly then it would hold the position.
The head is a definite must to have to get a proper upright positioning of the camera.

I've had a joby before, but this Pro series is definitely a Pro level. Very solid build and the ballhead X is extremely well made and smooth to use.

Holds my 5Dii with grip and 180 macro lens securely and without slowly creeping to the ground. I also use it (serious over kill) with a hot shoe adapter to place flashes in/on many places for wireless flash and better lighting which increases the Gorillapod's usefulness for me. The ball head makes adjustment in most positions possible and easy while being very secure.

I bought the Gorillapod Focus for traveling. Its first mission was to hold the camera for some sunrise pictures on the beach in Florida. "Mounted" on a wooden stake I took some longe exposure shots. Ajustment was very easy, steady and accurate withe the Ballhead (Canon 7D + battery grip+ lenses)
Even under heavy rain it was working as expected.

I've thrown my gorillapod around a tree, on fire-escapes, on poles, on a roller-skate, and I've used it for some product photography. It's really sturdy-- and it has allowed me to get shots that would have been impossible otherwise. I've used it to shoot timelapses and really long exposures -- as long as I gripped it to something sturdy the shots have all turned out amazing, without any shaking or movement.
I highly recommend for anyone on the go or shooting GoRILLASTYLE!

this is a great thing to have in your camera bag. It's one of those things you don't even know you need until you are on a shoot and it's solving a problem for you. I've used it with big and little cameras but i've also mounted LED lights and mics with it when i needed to rig up something fast and dirty. I have 2 of the lighter ones and they are good but this pro version gives you that added security that will let you put your camera in some crazy places that you otherwise wouldn't consider.

This is a great minipod when the regular tripod can't go any lower. It's strong enough to hold a big DSLR camera (I haven't tried w/ the flash unit). It's also compact, I can put in my camera bag.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus/Ballhead X Bundle (Black/Gray):
This tripod is fun and versatile, but the size and weight slightly diminishes the intended advantage of portability that the smaller Gorillapods enjoy. A good price. The ballhead X works as described - smooth operation. I use a Nikon D300 with a variety of heavy lenses and the tripod does the job, although it is difficult to get on the ground sometimes to look through the viewfinder when there is no tree other other thing around to prop it up on. The joints are solid, but of course this means that adjusting them is more difficult.

The Gorillapod is much more durable and stronger than I had expected. This is a perfect travel tripod for larger equipment. I'm very pleased with the compact size and light weight. I intend to use my tripod under water half the time for tight macro shots.[...]

I use this for timelapse photos off of railings, etc. I also use it to mount a camera in odd places. You can adjust the legs to fit most objects and with the rubber rings on each section of the legs, it tends to stay put fairly well. I am operating a Nikon D700 off of my heavier duty version of the Gorillapod. The only drawbacks I have are that the head that comes on it is a little lighter duty than I care for and the leg segments are a little difficult to adjust. Having said that though, I haven't had any issues yet.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod Focus/Ballhead X Bundle (Black/Gray):
Great tripod for what it is. It's not trying to be a full blown tripod, so it shouldn't be judged as such.
The ballhead that comes in this combo is of great quality and allows portrait shots without having to wrap the gorillapod around a vertical post.
It has weight to it, which is good given it's dimensions. It stays planted if you take the time to adjust the feet in a way that they don't want to pull a 'bambi on ice'.
To summarize, I love it.
I have a Thinktank retrospective 5 camera bag with a D7000 & 2 lenses and I put the Gorillapod Focus across the top and use the velcro flap on the bag to keep everything down tight. Works great for day trips when I don't have any specific shooting planned.

I like to shoot macro and low level photography, so this is the perfect tripod for me I have use it with my Canon 7D, and 70-200mm f/2.8, and keep the camera steady. I have also use it to get underwater photography with a Kodak Z3x and Ikelite housing, so I cam place it on the sandy bottom of the sea to get some nice pictures, while it helps with the bouyancy.

I was looking for a lightweight, all-around tripod that I could use in several situations. After using this tripod over a week, I can say I'm more than happy with the functionality, stability, and mobility of it. I do lot of hiking and this is just perfect tripod to pack in a backpack. The tripod is stable enough to carry my 5D MK II with EF-L 70-200 2.8 ISM US. I also use it in DSLR video shootings when I'm on the go.
