I haven't bought a lot of gear lately, but I was struck with a case of G.A.S. about a week ago and decided I "needed" a new remote shutter release for my Canon DSLR's. I already had two, one being Canon's basic shutter release and the other a wireless unit which I never had much luck getting any distance with. After some thought I decided on a wired release as I found I never really had much need for wireless anyhow. I did however want one with more functionality, such as an intervalometer timing and extended time delays.I didn't look to far to find one at B&H Photo that fit what I was looking for and at the price of [$], was almost $100 less than the Canon comparable timer release. This is the Pearstone ShutterBoss Timed Remote. [...] Two AAA batteries included and a well written instruction manual were tucked in the box along with the unit. The ShutterBoss Timed Remote's have a plug which is made to fit specific camera's. The one I ordered fits the 30D, 40D, 50D, etc. cameras that have a 3 pin plug connection. B&H also carries the ShutterBoss Timed Remote to fit other brands of cameras as well. When plugged into my 50D, the plug fits snuggly and should stay in place well while in use. The build quality is very good and seems rugged enough to last as long as I'll own it. Probably not waterproof and there's no mention in the manual of being so. It would have been nice to have a case included, but I should be able to find something inexpensive to fit the bill.I tried several functions with my 50D, such as a 60 second time delay, a sequence of shots at 10 second intervals, and it performed flawlessly. Setup is very easy and almost could be done without the manual. I wasn't to sure about auto-focus when timing, but just before the shutter was to release, it activated AF to grab focus. The display does have a backlight which stays on long enough to make some settings and then shuts off to conserve battery life. If the batteries are dead or out of the unit, it can still be used as a simple remote to set AF and then release the shutter.Overall I'm pleased with the quality of the unit as well as the price paid. Interestingly Nikon's own similar remote release looks identical to the Pearstone with the exception of the branding name. Does this mean I'm using Nikon gear on my Canon? :)

Remote switch gets the job done. Several timing features that are nice. It's functions, response and workmanship feel kind of 'cheap'. This impression was backed up by the fact that the "Confirmation" LED mentioned in the buttons diagram of the instructions, is never mentioned again in the instructions and never lit for any function I've ever used or tested. [...] I don't really need an LED confirmation. I've got one on the camera. As others have said, lack of an On/Off power switch seems to be a moronic oversight. I just reverse one of the batteries to secure the power. The batteries don't then have to be banging around in my bag.Works well as a manual shutter release without the batteries which is nice. Plug doesn't confidently seat in camera jack. Feels like it should have a firmer and deeper feel. Not 100% sure yet that I would recommend it to a friend.

Comments about Pearstone ShutterBoss Timed Remote for Canon with 3-Pin Connection:
I discovered that it can be used with autobracketing for HDR photography. One needs to specify TIMED EXPOSURE LENGTH (LONG on the readout) that is in excess of the total time of the autobracketed exposures. Autobracketing works with Autofocus either on or off. Will buy inexpensive velcro straps to secure to tripod. One needs to experiment with the unit. Not difficult to learn to use--except HDR application was tricky. Will allow me to experiment more. Already carry flashlight for night photography.

Comments about Pearstone ShutterBoss Timed Remote for Canon with 3-Pin Connection:
I purchased this mainly to do some Timelapse work. It works amazing. I love either using it for long exposures or sequences. I would say the only downside is that the light on the screen turns off even if you are mid way through something (I'm sure I am overlooking something in the settings or something). Also, I haven't figured out how to turn the device off so I'm sure I will be buying quite a few batteries. But other than that a solid product for an incredible price.

I used it a lot for timelapse and long exposure shoots. I like the fact one can program the amount of pictures to be taken, and the interval of time. I wish the wire would be a bit longer, and I could work on the camera parameters from the remote control, but it isn't a problem. I does work very well and has a good balance quality/price. I recoomend this product.

I purchased this for my son at the time he and my daughter-in-law were expecting their first child (who was born last week). He got it in time to play with it for a while before the baby came, and it's helping him take some great shots of the whole family. He loves the adjustable timing.

It's easy to use, I use it for long exposures mostly for now but will be using it for timelapses as well. It fits my 7D well but this problem has only one weird little problem which others have already pointed out - you can't turn it off! So you have to remove one battery(or reverse it), which is quite annoying but when you think about the price of this product, it's quite easy to get over it.

Comments about Pearstone ShutterBoss Timed Remote for Canon with 3-Pin Connection:
The remote works fine, but there are some reasons that are making me return it after trying it just once.
1. The connection to the camera (1D Mark IV) is too loose, so much that it got physically disconnected from there.
2. It is big, 6 inches big. I was wondering why do I want to keep the Canon simple switch RS-80N3, but size would be the reason, I prefer using the RS-80N3 when i don't need the timer functions, just a simple switch.
3. The weight of the remote itself can cause the disconnection of the remote from the camera, for example in windy conditions.
4. Setting time is difficult with the circular switch which when touched up/down can also effect in left/right press, so you have to be looking at the screen to make sure that while increasing time you didn't actually cause a left/right press which could switch you to setting something else. Canon original (expensive) wired timer has a turn know on the side that is used for setting numbers, so I started thinking about spending 3 times as much as for this remote just to have a device that performs well and quickly (it was a cold night and I didn't have patience for equipment issues).
I am returning this remote, getting the wireless version instead (Pearstone brand too), to get 2-in-1, a wireless and timer remote, and if that doesn't work as i like it, i want to get the Canon expensive timer remote TC-80N3, which is just as big as the wired Pearstone at 6 inches, but it does not fall out during operation.

Comments about Pearstone ShutterBoss Timed Remote for Canon with 3-Pin Connection:
I use this with my Canon 7D to do long exposures and timelapse photography. It works perfectly for both. This product is far cheaper than its Canon equivalent and works all the same. It is very easy to program and use. Take a minute and read the manual and you'll be set. The only thing that this is missing is an on/off switch to extend battery life. This is easily fixed by turning a battery around when you're done using it for the time being. Overall a great product at a good price that I would recommend.

Hands down, this thing is worth the money. It is made of light plastic, so I wouldn't recommend you throw it or step on it. At this price point, I wouldn't care if I broke it. Functions great with the 7D. Slight annoyance with having to take out the batteries to turn it off, but I just keep a plastic bag handy for keeping track of them. Very easy to use interface. The connection was fine for my 7D, with no concerns of breaking anything.

I bought this about a month ago. I used it a couple times and it works great. The last time I used it, it was freezing outside and a grabbed my camera off the tripod and ran back to the car... Losing this in the progress. It has been 10 days, six inches of melted snow later and I went up there today to look for it and after almost giving up I found it sitting there in a pile of snow..... STILL WORKING! Would buy again! Weather Resistant apparently!

It does its job. Two cons is that it doesn't have an on/off switch... and it doesn't have a proper box where u can put in, but it feets quite well on a standardsize front panel rigid plastic box. If u have one, this is a good tip...
