The 58mm UV Protector Filter from Tiffen is a wise initial investment. It can help protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs. A UV filter not only minimizes the bluish cast sometimes found under daylight conditions, but is also the best available protection against accidental damage to the front element of your lens.
A UV filter is the best available protection for the front element of your lens. A lens that accidentally gets dropped on its front element while hiking can potentially be saved by purchasing this item. Some people refer to them as "cheap insurance".
Aside from that more-than-significant benefit, UV filters cut through some of the haze in the atmosphere rendering your photos clearer, sharper and more contrasty. For those who enjoy outdoor photography, especially distant vistas, a UV filter can produce a more distinct image by removing much of the blue tint normally associated with atmospheric haze.
A UV Protector is probably the most popular UV filter people use. As a lens protector, it should be left on at all times to guard against front element damage but also adds the benefit of rendering your images clearer.
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

This item is designed to protect your existing lens from UV light and to help protect the front lens from minor impact/scratches/dust.
About 2 days after receiving and installing two of these filters (I got one for each lens), I was on an outing with my kids. My youngest, 7, had been collecting pebbles and, without my realising it, had tossed a bunch into my camera bag.
When I got home, I found all the pebbles he had stowed and, much to my dismay, found that the 300mm lens for my 35mm film camera had been scratched by one of these pebbles because the lenscap had come off in the bag. This lens was NOT otherwise protected
I also found that one of the lens caps for my digital camera (Olympus E-500) had also worked it's way loose, but with the Tiffen filter, it was not scratched. Maybe it wouldn't have been scratched anyway, but I felt MUCH better for a MINIMAL investment to know for sure that it wouldn't have been.
This filter, though not specifically designed for my camera, actually seats better than the lens caps ever did and it's barely noticible on the camera, does not intrude with the camera or accessory's functions, and my lens caps fit better on the filter than they did on the lens itself!

I bought this to protect the lens. I take it off for most of the stuff I do, but leave it on when the lens is in my bag or when using it outdoors.
This is a cheap UV filter that performs the function, however the glass was so loose when got it I thought there was broken glass in the package. On inspection I found that the retaining ring was just loose, and rather than hassel with returns I just fixed it and moved on.
I'm not unhappy with it but not particularly impressed either - but hey - it's just a UV filter. If I could rate it at 2.5 stars I would.
Yes I would reccomend it to a friend with the above disclaimer. And I would buy one again for the same purpose.

I always buy the tiffen filters because of the price/quality they have. This filter helps you eliminating the "fog" in landscape photography, also helps you to keep your glass clean and scratch free.

I love Tiffen products, especially the 58 mm UV Protector Filter! I recently tried out the 58 mm UV Protector Filter, taking ocean photos near Kennedy Airport at Rockaway Beach, New York. My photos turned out great, with perfect light in the afternoon sun and at sundown with the ultraviolet rays being filtered beautifully. Thank you, B & H, for selling me this great filter!

I purchased this lens to protect my Canon 50mm F/1.4.
It is cheap and nice. Does what I want. It doesn't interfere with imaging of the lens obviously,
Under dim light, the focusing of the lens sometimes was not very accurate compared to those after removing it. But I'm not very sure whether its because my shaking hand or not.

I always wonder why some people buy lens fot f.e. 2000$ and they don't use any filters...? I use it on every lens I own, lens lifetime is much longer.

the lens is not set tight and floats. Hate the sound of the lens moving around so I bought a new and different one.

Just threw it on my 50mm 1.4, I was sad to find it had some dust on it out of the package, a noticeable amount. No a big deal, but odd. The glass fits solidly in the ring and that screwed right on, so I'm happy.
