The VideoMic Pro from Rode packs the audio quality and features of the popular VideoMic into an ultra compact and lightweight design that's ideal for use with HDSLR cameras, camcorders, and audio recorders. The microphone has a broadcast-quality condenser capsule with a supercardioid pickup pattern to capture audio from the front, while minimizing pickup from the sides and rear. An integrated shockmount and foam windscreen minimize handling and wind noise to keep your recordings crystal clear.
On the rear of the mic, you'll find a 3-way level control that offers -10dB, 0dB, and +20dB modes. There is also a 2-step high pass filter with 0 and 80Hz settings, letting you minimize the impact of low frequency hum, camera motor noise, and similar distractions. The mic has a standard camera shoe and a 3/8" threaded mount for easy attachment to cameras and boom poles. The 3.5mm plug is compatible with a wide variety of different cameras and audio devices. The VideoMic Pro operates for up to 70 hours on a single 9V battery, allowing you to work in the field without constant replacements.

Give it to Rode to make an already amazing product that much more amazing. The Rode VideoMic Pro, the spiritual successor to the ever popular Rode VideoMic took all the things that made the original shotgun microphone of choice for so many videographers and musical artists great and made it better. Rode really took into consideration the complaints and suggestions of the people who used the original VideoMic and added these features into the new Pro version. Features like broadcast quality audio capture, adjustable dB input (-10, 0, +20) and the ability to cut out low frequency sounds with the high pass filter, all in a form factor significantly smaller than the original model. Even the shockmount has been updated and shrunk to make whatever rig you are putting it on that much tighter and lighter without sacrificing quality sound. Now there is a significant price jump to the Pro version (from $150 to $230) but if you sign up for the 10 year warranty (another plus) Rode will send you a free dead cat windscreen for free! Easily saving you around [$]! For the new size of the device and the features it has, its well worth the extra money.Overall no camera rig would be complete without it. Pair this up with a Zoom H1/H4n and you've got a pro audio solution comparable to most industry standard audio solutions. If you have a tight budget but looking for the best quality sound for money you can't go wrong with the Rode VideoMic Pro.

Yes, this is a great microphone once you figure it out, especially the trick in getting the battery cover off and snapping it back on. What's worse, is the battery cover isn't attached by a small strap to the body of the electronics compartment of the mic. It's only a matter of (short) time that I'm struggling with removing or replacing the battery cover that it will fall and I'll lose it. Once you lose the battery compartment cover, that's it. The battery won't stay in its place, no contact, no power, no mic. Dead duck. This is a deal-killer for me.No matter how good the mic is, if you're on a shoot and somehow you lose the battery cover, you have no mic, and for most of us, that means no sound, or really bad sound. If you're shooting mission critical assignments, like a wedding, and you rely on this mic, you're in a world of hurt if you drop the battery cover and can't find it, such as under a table in the reception, or similar situation. If that weren't enough, the little rubber bands holding the mic body to the mounting bracket are very loose, and come off almost regularly as you try to fiddle with the body to change the battery. It's really poor design, and Rode should have figured out this is not a sustainable design for reliable field use. I ended up glueing the rubber bands to the body so they didn't keep coming off. You put one side on, and other side comes off. Geez, what a pain.If you plan to use the mic where a mixer is involved, as do I, you'll need an extension cable or two, because the short cord from the mic is long enough to reach the camera only if it's mounted on the hot shoe directly above the camera. If you plan to use an "L" bracket, you'll need an extension cable to reach the camera input jack. The cord is NOT coiled, which would have been nice. It just hangs there. The switches on the back of the body give good control over mic functions, but they're really small, and tight to operate, so you'll jiggle the mic quite a bit when you engage the switches. Sometimes, you'll go all the way to the right when you're trying to get to the center position, so more fiddling is involved. These might seem petty, but when you're under pressure to get the right shot, the last thing you need is to wonder if the rubber bands are loose on the suspension, or having to change the battery in mid-shoot, then losing the battery cover on the floor, and looking around for it. Heaven help us if we lose the battery cover in a dark room or outside on grass, or other equally distasterous situation.[...] So far, there is no fix for this in the pipeline that I know of, and there's no provision for purchasing extra battery covers. I'll update this review if I find out anything to the contrary. In the mean time, just keep in mind that if you lose the battery cover, you're a dead duck. If you want to take that chance, I'll sell you mine at a discount!Hope this helps.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
For its size, the VideoMic Pro is an incredible piece of audio gear. How the engineers at Rode managed to cram a high-pass filter as well as -10db and +20db settings into something so tiny, is beyond me.
No, it isn't the perfect shotgun mic for every production. Like any piece of kit, it has its purposes. It only has a 3.5mm jack, instead of a XLR connection. But for a one-man video production such as myself, it is the ideal setup. Until I can find someone willing to be my boom operator, this mic will be the next best thing.

what can i say? this machine takes the cake. it is far smaller than the original rode videomic, but gives you the same top quality audio. fits easiy into the shoe-mount and locks into place. the audio is far superior of that on the onboard mic. great price on BH. highly recommended.

The mic works well but still picks up the auto focus sounds from my D7000. Much better than using the built-in mic though. In using where focusing is not required, it is far superior to the built in mic. Like the options for volume levels and the on light.

I use this on my D3s to capture run-n-gun behind the scenes video of my thesis work in 3D imaging. The sound quality is way way better than the built-in mic, and it's so light I barely notice it.
Just know that if it's not pointed within a few degrees of your subject the volume drops way off as this is a directional shotgun mic.
The only con I have is that when using it (or any mic) with a RRS L-plate, it can be hard to open the rubber flap to plug it in, but that's an issue for Nikon and RRS, not Rode.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
The size and shape are definitely an improvement over the older videomic. But I have questions about the shock mounts and mic wire. The plug cord seems a bit flimsy, but on the pro side it has a gold connector. The shock mounts actually came detached in the middle of a job and I thought they were broken. Later I realized they were just detached which shouldn't happen without a big jolt. Audio sounds good, but can't really tell much of a difference from the old videomic. The external switches for gain is great. The old videomic's gain switches were almost useless since you had to take the battery out, get out a flashlight and use a toothpick to move the jumpers.

I use the VideoMic Pro on the Canon 60D and WOW! It is smaller than I thought it would be, and fits in the camera bag with all the rest of the gear. I have not found anything not to like about it. I would recommend this product to friends and relatives.

Just bought this for a trip where I need to capture video testimonials in the field, in all kinds of conditions including wind, background noise, etc. I am not well-versed in audio recording. This mic performed great and was VERY easy to use. I used the furry wind shield on it for most recording. VERY happy I brough this on the trip.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
I bought this mic on recommendation. I wanted it in case of failure with my H4N external audio setup, so that I wouldn't have to resort to the Canon 7D camera mic. While it did bring some direction and tone to the voice directly in front of the camera, it brought ALOT of mid range hissy noise too...very obnoxious and something that would need to be edited with every use. Definitely not a good fall back and can't imagine why people would applaud this mic.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
I have a Rode VideoMic and I thought that this one which is more expensive, smaller and has the Pro name on it might be better to use it on speakers. 20-40 feet away. But compare with Rode VideoMic not only the sound is not as natural but the hiss is a lot more pronounce. I did the testing unto the same conditions, and the Rode VideoMic proved a lot better. The quality is cheaper aslo- plastic, maybe design for dslr cameras only! Hope will help.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
The sound through this mic when properly mounted on a boom pole is amazing. This lightweight short compact run and gun shotgun mic out does many standard shotguns. This mic, the h1, rode miniboompole, 10' extension cord, and super clamp is a amazing setup.
Now, the only reason this is not 5 stars is because of the design. Design doesnt matter? Think again. The stabilization bands come off every once in awhile, and one has already broke (they give you extra). When stored in a bag, even a little trip can put a lot of bands off the mic. The battery door compartment is very bad design. Hard to open, close, and get to.
A would HIGHLY reccomend a windmuff with this mic. Every shotgun NEEDS one if you are outside even with NO wind!

I shoot video with a Canon 7D. The audio that the camera records isn't usable... ever.
I love this mic for two reasons. When I shoot events, it allows me to be able to use the natural sounds of the event. So I don't have to lay fake sounds of music over top. And two, when I shoot narrative pieces, it makes syncing audio with an external recorder a snap.
It works great with DSLRs and allows for shooters to have a lightweight, powerful shotgun right on top of the camera.

Going to South America for ten weeks. Packing only a Nikon D7000 for video work. Needed a shotgun that is light, small and captures decent sound. In an at home trial run this little gem held up very nicely against my ME66.
