I was debating the much more expensive Singh-Ray version, but just couldn't bring myself to spend that much for a filter - particularly given how much I planned to use it. I opted for the much cheaper B+W 6-stop filter. It works great. I was concerned about being able to focus with the filter in place. In bright sunlight conditions that is not really a problem as the camera will focus through the filter. In darker conditions, I do have to remove the filter for the focus system to be able to get a lock, but that's not a big deal. I am very happy with my purchase of this high quality filter.

A very dark filter that allows you to slow down shutter speed for that smooth silky water falls. Have tried sandwiching other filters with varied results nothing compares with this filter for final picture results.

B&W filters are simple the best. This filter is great for water falls and giving a sense of movement to extremely slow subjects.( try this filter on a macro of a snail )

After owning other B&W filters I was not disappointed with my purchase. Performs just as advertised. Awesome for photographing waterfalls in bright sunlight. Really great filters.

Comments about B+W 77mm #106 Neutral Density (ND) 1.8 Filter:
I ordered this 77mm filter for both of my lenses (50mm f/1.4 and 18-270 zoom). For both of them I needed step-up rings and was worried that the quality would be poor as a result. Not so. The first day of its delivery I took it out to the beach, attached it to my zoom lens with the step-up ring and shot the sunset along with other various scenes. The quality is astounding.
In speaking about facts, this filter has a 1.5% transmittance of light or in other words, 6 stops. This reduces a shutter speed of 1/4000s to 1/60s. Or 1/15 s to 4seconds. I found that it performed absolutely beautifully when capturing moving water at the ocean along with moving clouds in the sky for a very dramatic look. I received great praise for the images I took that day. 6 stops is also perfect for my 50 f/1.4 because it allows me to shoot at high apertures (f/1.4-f/2) in broad daylight. This allows for a seriously shallow depth of field at times during the day where it would otherwise be impossible.
The filter itself comes in a case that supports it well (has foam padding and enough space to be able to remove and replace the filter without accidentally touching the filter surface. The filter itself is of very high quality, well weighted, and has quality threads which allow for easy attachment to my step up rings.
I highly recommend this to anyone that's looking to try out long exposures in moderate light and high apertures in broad daylight. It is the perfect filter and transmittance amount for those sorts of photography.

Comments about B+W 77mm #106 Neutral Density (ND) 1.8 Filter:
Used mostly for long-exposure photography. The .9 (3-stop) often wasn't strong enough for shooting things like waterfalls during the day. This 6-stop filter offers extra flexibility for choosing shutter speeds and apertures.

I use this filter to slow shutter speed when photographing waterfalls. I use this 6 stop filter with my CP to achieve more dramatic effects.

Comments about B+W 77mm #106 Neutral Density (ND) 1.8 Filter:
This does what it should... cut the exposure by several stops. For me, it is useful to make running water very smooth with much longer exposures. It is very difficult to see through the viewfinder with this attached. Before buying it, I had assumed it would require prior composition and focus, but to my surprise my 17-40 still focuses with the filter attached.

Use this filter to smooth out water flows in your landscape shoot or eliminate fast moving objects in your street photography. Its effect is consistent but with a slight color tint which can be corrected easily in post processing. It's thin enough to leave no dark vignette when used on my Canon 5DII. This filter was bought together with a Hoya 0.9 ND. Stacked together, the two glasses provide at least 9-stop light reduction.

This is a wonderful filter to add to my collection. I love that you can use auto focus through this filter. B+W quality is superb! Solid fit and build construction. Consistent output... What more do you want?A little spendy, but if you want quality, that's what you have to deal with.

Comments about B+W 77mm #106 Neutral Density (ND) 1.8 Filter:
This filter is so dark, that when I took it out from the box the first time, I thought it was black! I've tested it with a winter scene and I was amazed by the effectiveness of this ND filter! It's says it is a 6 stops, but is some situations, with a light over exposure, I slowed down the shutter speed up to 8 stops! It really works well and it really worth the price! I use it with my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM and the image quality is stunning! Perfect for time lapse, to allow wide apertures in daylight and to slow the shutter speed even in the brightess winter day with a the glossy white snow reflecting the blinding sunshines!

Comments about B+W 77mm #106 Neutral Density (ND) 1.8 Filter:
I have been shooting with this filter for several years. Excellent ND filter; those that have replaced this filter due to it being "warm" failed to do proper research before their purchase. Per the B+W web site, it is one of the few filters in the B+W inventory that is naturally warm, and B+W specifically makes a filter to be used in conjunction with #106 in order to neutralize the colour. Most people won't be bothered by the slight warmth and it is easily corrected with a click of the mouse if you use a colour-checker card, etc., as part of your colour control.
This dark filter (6 stops) really tames harsh sun light when shooting on a bright beach at high noon in addition to using strobes. ND filters simply allow a myriad of artistic and technical options that are not available to the photographer otherwise when shooting during the daylight hours.
The filter is dark enough to give you a very slow shutterspeed even on the brightest of days, keeping your aperture in the sweet range, without having to stop down to the point where diffraction becomes an issue.
I highly recommend this filter.
