The Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm VR Zoom Lens (Black) is a compact and easily portable digital camera with a 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Zoom Lens. The mirrorless design allows the camera to be extra-small and lightweight, while still retaining all of the best qualities of a mirrored model. Featuring a CX-Format High-Speed AF CMOS Sensor and an EXPEED 3 dual image processor, this small device packs some punch. The sensor enables great photos even in low light, while the EXPEED 3 enables superior system performance, high-speed processing, advanced phase detection autofocus and high-speed data transfer rates.
The J1 comes with a 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Zoom Lens, featuring up to 3x magnification and a silent stepping AF motor (STM). The lens has image stabilization (VR II) to combat the effects of camera shake. The angle of view ranges from 29° 40" to 77°. The lens's minimum focus distance is 0.66' (0.2m), and the filter size is 40.5mm. The 10-30mm is a versatile lens for applications ranging from wide-angle to tight portrait shots, and applies 3 aspherical lens elements to ensure high image quality, even at the widest aperture settings. The 10-30mm zoom range enables excellent capture of fine detail, even in far-away shots. Internal Focusing / IF technology enables more compact, lightweight construction, as well as a closer focusing distance. A multi-layer lens coating helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level.
The J1 camera has an interchangeable lens system, allowing you to select from 3 optional 1 NIKKOR lenses in addition to the included one. There's even a lens designed specifically for movie filming. Swapping lenses is quick and easy, enabling you to stay at-the-ready at all times. Aside from the 10-30 mm focal length of the included lens, you may choose a single focal length of 10 mm or a 30-110mm telephoto.
A highly responsive autofocus and a fast shooting speed ensure that you never miss a moment. You get 10 fps continuous shooting speed in autofocus mode, so your camera won't lag behind the action. An impressive 73 point AF array gives you amazing clarity, even when capturing fast-moving subjects. A large 3.0" LCD color screen features a 460k-dot resolution and an anti-glare coating for easy viewing, even in bright sunlight.
Enjoy one-touch Full HD (1080p) movie record mode-and the ability to capture still images while recording! Add a slow-motion effect to make your imaging more dramatic. Experience the Motion Snapshot One-Touch Photo Animation Experience to bring your photos to life. This feature essentially creates a picture slideshow where there would otherwise be merely a single image. Thanks to Smart Photo Selector, the J1 chooses the best of the images you've taken, so all you have to focus on is getting the shot you want. Let the camera do the work for you while you do what you love and stay in the moment. Enjoy easy access to advanced features with a menu that is easy to follow, no matter how much photography experience you've had.

Comments about Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm VR Zoom Lens (Black):
I bought the camera to shoot short (5-15 minute) videos and occasional stills. I ended up buying the 30-110 lens too, and suddenly I enjoy taking pictures again. The video quality is incredible. I caught my son's band performing 3 songs and put them on youtube. I had recorded the set with my Tascom, but didn't even use that for the video because the Nikon's mics were good enough. Definitely get a fast SD card, you'll get a stutter with a class 4. Other than that, open the box, charge the battery, and enjoy it. Small enough to take anywhere, big enough to have a solid feel.

Comments about Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm VR Zoom Lens (Black):
I own a Nikon D90 and a D40. Both are great camera's but sometimes I want to focus on "the moment" instead of lugging around the bigger body camera. My point and shoot (a Cannon Powershot SD 1200S) camera fits in my pocket but can't stop the action of my 6 year old boy and those pics come out blurry. I purchased this camera as I was looking for something that could meet my all around / everyday needs; something that was sort of in the middle of a larger DSLR and a point and shoot camera. The Nikon 1 J1 does EXACTLY what I needed. It takes great photos (better outdoors than indoors as you would expect from a camera of this size). The photos are FAR BETTER than a regular point and shoot camera as the sensor is over 6 times larger than a normal point and shoot camera. I now get crisp photos I can enlarge to 8x10 without a problem. It is small enough that I can bring it anywhere and not worry I am going to miss that special shot, yet I can still enjoy myself and not have to worry about lugging around my larger D90. Nothing will replace the quality of a larger size DSLR but with the Nikon 1 J1, you will always have the flexibility of having it with you and not miss a photo opportunity. It goes everywhere with me.....

I will be using this for personal photography. I am adjusting to composing the image on the back of the camera. At first I kept putting it up to my eye. The picture quality is great.

Comments about Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm VR Zoom Lens (Black):
This is a nice step up from point and shoot. While I liked my point and shoot I wanted a little more including interchangeable lenses. However, I did not want to get something large or complicated. The J1 is perfect. Has a lot of neat features including video but not many features I'll get lost.
Fairly small and light and has great pictures. The menu system is shallow and easy to learn.

Comments about Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm VR Zoom Lens (Black):
Excellent small package with exchangable lens system. My wife loves the portability relative to the larger DSLR packages. Image quality not noticably reduced for our level of photographic expertise and excellent sports photography ability (hockey).

Comments about Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm VR Zoom Lens (Black):
Nikon filled a niche perfectly with this camera. It's dramatically smaller than a DSLR, but has interchangeable lenses and extremely quick reflexes. While I like the Micro 4/3 systems, the larger sensor requires larger lenses.
The Nikon 1 is a perfect camera for those who are frustrated with the limitations of most P&S cameras (slow focus, slow start-up, often mediocre lenses and few options for growth). The Nikon 1 lenses seem to have the same excellent qualities of Nikon's better (but not-pro) SLR lenses - well made, feel durable but light weight and with excellent optics.
If the camera and lenses were smaller, they'd be harder to use. The size is perfect.
In use the camera is extremely capable. Exposure is excellent, focus is accurate and fast, auto-WB produces very natural colors.
What future lenses become available and how the camera works with the legacy Nikon lenses will be interesting to see too.
