While there are many apps that enable recording using an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, Tascam's iM2 Stereo Microphone for Apple iOS Products provides you with an external pair of condenser microphones that plug into the dock connector of your chosen device. The iM2 has several recording features that make it easy to use and allow for superb audio recordings -- while its compact size means it can tag along pretty much anywhere you go.
For the best sound placement, the microphones can be adjusted 180 degrees from front to back. The uni-directional elements are arranged in an AB pattern for detailed stereo imaging while capturing the ambiance of the recording room. The iM2 has its own microphone pre-amp and analog to digital converter for low noise and exceptional sound quality. The unit can handle up to 125 dB sound levels for capturing varied noise levels without distorting the sound. The iM2 also has a stereo limiter to subdue loud bursts of sound.
A knob on the side adjusts the microphone level for quick adjustments. While it's powered by your device, it has a USB input so that you can charge your device through a computer or power adapter to avoid cutting off extended recordings due to a drained battery. Whether you're recording live audio, writing songs using the help of an app, recording during rehearsals or gathering sound effects for productions or remixes, the iM2 is both useful and affordable.

Good quality recording and portability. I use this for recording live music and voice overs. But here are some problems:1) Gotta switch to mono if you use during movie record since mic orientation will be top to bottom instead of left/right. Assuming horizontal screen during recording.2) Seems the 4S issue with cell signal/wifi disconnecting is a known problem, but from what I can gather is an Apple problem since an iPhone 4 I tested doesn't have any issues. Anyway, no biggie because you should put your device in airplane mode anyway for best quality and no interruptions.3) Tascam free app is very quirky, but there are better ones that you can buy like TwistedWave.4) Does not fit securely on the connector, but not so much that I'm afraid it will fall off. It weighs very little fortunately.5) exporting .mp3 files is much more difficult than it should be, but that is also due to Apple iOS and not this product. Could be a deal breaker to some and purchase a complete self contained portable recorder instead.6) Product feels very cheap and doesn't fell like a [$] mic. Recording quality is good though. If this cost $50, I would probably go with 5 stars. While that doesn't change the recording quality, I have a hard time believing this product is going to last longer than 1-2 years due really cheap plastic components.7) There is still debate on if monitoring through headphones works or not. Some have claimed that it works for certain apps and only when using a headphone that doesn't have a built in mic. I have had no luck with the combination of Tascam app and standard iPhone headphones.8) Yeah! A USB port to power the phone through the mic. Booo!, mini USB connector from the 90s when everything else (even Kindles) have moved to micro USB. Man I wish I didn't recycle the 10+ mini USB chargers that I had when Nokia and Blackberry phones were the rage.Overall, a lot of nit picky issues but keep in mind, the same issues on a product that is not related to Apple will get two stars less.

Cons: It DOES NOT work with Garageband. Although GB does recognize it, the sound level coming through is so low that it is unusable.
-I tried it on both my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 and no luck. I read the instructions carefully and tried connecting and disconnecting the unit and the levels were never high enough to use.
Pros: It has good sound... but only with the Tascam apps. The Tascam app is clunky in comparison to other apps, but it's also simple to use if you just want stereo recordings with no editing, and produces good sound. You can bring the tracks out in iTunes at least on a Mac, which is handy.
Might be good for simple interviews, recording meetings, but not for music tracking.

I use it with my iPhone 4s, now the audio quality is much better than before!I suggest to buy a pocket bag (such as a compact flash zip bag) in order to safely carry it.

Purchased this microphone for a concert I was going to see that night and it worked out great. I was able to video parts of the show and have great sound. Good memories of the concert and my trip. The mike blocked out the disturbing vibrations and made the sound clear. High highs and low lows.

Obviously, this should be easy. Plug in. Record. Play. And it is fairly simple to use. I am still having issues with hiss and "tape noise," if you will, however, not to mention the clunky soundcloud upload in order to get audio off the device. i DO like it .. and will keep slugging away...but the device could clearly use a few improvements.

Used on a newer iPod Touch. Works great with the Tascam app as well as the Apple voice recorder. Sound quality was great for the price paid for this thing.

Comments about Tascam iM2 Stereo Microphone for Apple iOS Products:
My rating is based purely on the fact that I only paid [$] for something that rivals the quality of equipment that is a lot more expensive. It is a very compact microphone that is also extremely sensitive. The free App is also a decent compliment to this microphone which actually allows you to monitor your recordings. Take this thing ANYWHERE!!!!! The woods, a concert, your next band rehearsal, space, wherever....it will perform beyond your expectations. I do recommend doing a couple of test runs before committing to a big recording like a concert or rehearsal. Make sure that you turn AirPlane mode off (not sure why) and dim your screen to save on the battery (unless you have access to a USB port, which this mic allows you to plug into for charging. Anyway....excellent microphone for the money.

I've only had the microphone for a week and have used it only a few times but in combination with a recording app I've gotten some good preliminary results. It does work just as well with the voice memo and video functions on the Iphone but I wanted a bit better quality. I had no issues with set-up it was plug and play and worked right away. I have yet to try it in high volume situations like winter drumlines or outside but inside especially with distance. Like I said so far so good. No complaints.

Comments about Tascam iM2 Stereo Microphone for Apple iOS Products:
We were looking for a microphone that was more sensitive than the built-in iPad one and this was not. In fact, the volume levels were lower than the iPad's.
If not doing its job was not lame enough, the setup, "manual?" and software were unintuitive and dysfunctional. If Tascom wants to compete in the Apple environment, where people expect plug and play excellence, they better upgrade not only their products but the user interface as well.

I interview clients and audience members before and after presentations and this is great product to do this. I don't have to carry another audio recorder around with me as I travel. For a great quality recording with multiple uses and ways to distribute the iM2 Stereo Microphone is fantastic.

The Tascam app is the weak link in the chain. Visual levels may indicate that you are recording well, yet you are completely overloading.
The instructions that come with the unit are weak.
Best method seems to be to not touch any iPhone 4S controls, but control levels with the on-mic control.

It simply did NOT work. I could never get the microphone to record even though there were just a few switches. I went back to using the built-in mike on the iPhone and returned this piece of junk for a refund.

Comments about Tascam iM2 Stereo Microphone for Apple iOS Products:
A friend and I have been recording a podcast for a couple years using two microphones, a computer, a mixing board, audio interface, headphone distribution, etc, etc. When my home studio was torn down for remodeling I went looking for a simple podcast solution so we could keep the show going. The Tascam iM2 is the answer. It sounds really great and uses the iPhone that I already have. We sat across the table from each other and recorded our podcast and it turned out just fine.
I also got the opportunity to record a live performance of our school choir performance and burned the files directly to CD for the teacher. She was thrilled with the next day feedback and couldn't believe I could get such a good recording on an iPhone.
For a room mic it is as true as any I have ever heard. Recording in a relatively quite environment yielded great results, though we have to keep the paper rustling 2 inches from the mic under control, but that is operator error. All in all I think it is a great value and I don't think I am going to go back to recording the podcast the other way, this is just too simple and quick.
As a side note, you will need to set your iPhone or iPod to not go to sleep or it will terminate the recording and turn off. Once I had it set properly it recorded for the entire time with no issues.

Comments about Tascam iM2 Stereo Microphone for Apple iOS Products:
I purchased the Tascam IM2 mic to record live music and make interview of people (work and leisure).
It's a great compromise between quality, simplicity and price.
It produces wav files that can be played on a hifi system without any problem. Using itunes, sound files can also be transfered on a mac or pc for further edition.
The reasons why I don't give it a 5* is because the device doesn't stick perfectly well to the iPhone (no secure lock).
Also, it consumes a lot of the iphone's battery if not pluged to a miniUSB power source (sold separately).

After years of searching for the perfect way to capture new material in the practice room is now over. The iM2 is the answer.
The days of heavy clipping, ugly distortion or mono recordings a thing of the past.
I can not recommend this product enough and would suggest that everyone does recording on their iPhone4/4s, iPod Touch or iPad should own one.

The actual audio reproduction - acoustic guitar was good but the output level seems weak. I had everything turned up all the way and still seemed tepid volume. I was playing a high-end 12-string that has plenty of volume.
