Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm & 55-200mm VR Lenses:
I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur photographer. The D5100 meets all my needs. It makes a wonderful family camera when used in the automatic mode. It's no harder than your current point and shooter. It, however, will allow you to advance from a "picture taker" to a "photographer" if you let it and study all of its feature set.I found the most valuable accessory I purchased to be the "Nikon D5100 for Dummies" book. The Nikon user pamphlet is next to useless in its brevity, and this book gives a full color, detailed description of all the camera, lens and photo manipulation features. I knew a lot of this information beforehand having once been a film user, but do yourself a favor, swallow your pride, and get the book. No one has to know. :)I also thoroughly read David Busch's "Nikon D5100". I had ordered and read both volumes weeks prior to ordering my camera package. Not only does it instantly make you fairly self sufficient as a user, but as you study the various features, you can make a more informed buying decision. What's [$] worth of knowledge, compared to my $1600 investment. It's cheap insurance and money very, very well spent. In less than a week, I'm probably 95% up to speed on this camera.I selected the D5100 over the D7000, since I like the smaller body size, while still having the same image sensor as the more expensive D7000. I don't need a water resistant camera that's built heavier and sturdier. I also don't find I miss the outboard control buttons for sundry adjustments. Once you master a few basic processes and or adjustments, the camera is quite fast and flexible. I can alter my focus or release functions in about fifteen seconds, as opposed to a one click adjustment on a prosumer D7000, and if you're honest with yourself, unless you're making your income by shooting weddings or shooting for National Geographic, you really don't need that sort of speed either. I also find a burst shooting rate of c. 4 frames per second to be more than fast; again unless you're a professional sports photographer. I'm guessing you don't fall into that category either.I also opted to save the extra money over the D7000 to invest in two extra lenses. When technology sadly but inevitably passes up both the D5100 and D7000 sooner or later, I'll still have my DX lens assortment to simply add to a newer body.Lastly, and considering that I had to save for many months to make my purchase, B & H provided me with all brand new, factory sealed merchandise. Their prices are competitive, and by choosing UPS ground shipping, I was able to track my order constantly. Overall, one of my best on line transactions.I'm hoping this bit of information will allow you also, to make a well thought out, and pleasurable buying decision...
