Nikon calls their D4 Digital SLR Camera a "total professional imaging machine". They would be correct in doing so. Designed for the working photographer, the D4 meets the most-demanding photog's needs and then some. Packed with features essential to getting the job done, and getting it done well this rig is more than a digital camera, it's a shooter's bread and butter.
Building off the basic structure of its predecessor, the D4 goes big in a number of ways which are sure to be appreciated. The camera features a 16.2Mp 36 x 23.9mm CMOS sensor with Nikon's FX-format and the EXPEED3 image processor. ISO sensitivity can now be extended as low as ISO 50 or as high as 204,800 with a standard range of 100-12,800 ISO. Additionally, 10 frames per second continuous shooting in FX-format for up to 200 shots ensures the decisive moment will not be missed.
The D4 records in RAW, JPEG, TIFF, and RAW + JPEG files. Metering options include RGB 3D Color Matrix III metering, center-weighted, and spot. Additionally, compatible storage media includes the future of professional storage, XQD memory cards, and Type I CompactFlash memory cards (UDMA compliant). Of course, NIKKOR AF-S and AF-I lenses are compatible with the D4 body, putting an extensive line of lenses at the photographer's disposal.
Another improvement on D4's little brother would be the slightly bigger LCD screen. Up from 3", the D4 has a 3.2" LCD monitor with a 170° viewing angle, approximately 100% frame coverage, automatic monitor brightness control, and Live View. In Live View the image can be enlarged up to 46x to make on the spot focus confirmation. Surrounding the monitor are illuminated buttons for ease of use even in low light. Additionally, quick access Live View confirms exposure, white balance, monitor hue, histogram, focus mode, AF area mode, and focusing accuracy with ease.
The D4 also boasts stellar auto focus features - like 51 AF points, an AF mode selector switch, and fast AF point selection. All three of these components of the AF system ensure accurate, fast shooting whether the subject is a room full of children or a high-speed sporting event.
Of course, the D4 wouldn't be a professional level DSLR if it didn't include full HD video capture. The D4 does so, making it equally a pro videographer's tool as much as a pro photographer's. From 1080p broadcast quality video at 30 or 24 fps to full manual control to the option to add an external mic for stereo audio capture, the D4 isn't just a digital camera that also captures video.
Features like the aforementioned Live View allow the videographer to confirm capture of their footage on the camera's LCD and an external (optional) monitor simultaneously. It also gives you access to Picture Controls to handle the look and feel of the video, in-camera. Peak audio meters also allow the videographer to adjust sound levels manually in 20 incremental steps. Remote start and stop of view using wired and wireless remote accessories is also an option, among many others.

Got the D4 via NPS through B&H on March 16th. It did arrive with the Sony XQD 16GB card and reader. I use it for sports & wildlife so I wanted the FPS and high ISO. I also shoot a lot of landscape, weddings, and other events, so I needed a versatile camera to replace the D700.
Images shot at 6400 ISO are very clean (similar to the D700 at ISO 3200). The few that I have tried at 12,800 are just amazingly clean. In the short time I have had the camera, I did try some sports and was very happy with how tact sharp the images were. Focusing is very fast and very accurate (even in low light sporting event). Using the Menus is an easy transition from other Nikon cameras. The LCD is bright and very easy to read.
The ergonomics of the camera feel great and the buttons are easy to access without taking my eye away from the viewfinder.
All in all, a great camera and really happy with the purchase.
One negative note, the manual is simply atrocious to the point of being useless. In most cases, there is no context to why you would select certain settings. Would it be that hard for Nikon to put in some examples of menu item selection based on say sports, landscape, portrait etc.? Most corresponded to the D700 so I was able to setup the shooting banks quickly. Since this is my first camera with video, that section was incredibly bad and took a lot of trial and error before I got good results.

My work requires both photo and video, mostly documenting action sports. While the D4 is an amazing camera for photo, it's a huge disappointment for video. Focus tracking is insanely fast for photo and high ISOs are clean. Video is VERY soft and largely unusable at a professional level. I was hoping to consolidate all my work into one gear bag, so it looks like after 10 years I'm finally switching to Canon.

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I have seen plenty of website that say the D3s is better in this way or that way. At first I believed them ,but then I delved into the details of the Nikon D4. Going from the d3s to the D4 is an immense change on the software configuration level. Nothing in the D4 is going to be easy to learn on the fly, you MUST sit down with the book with and without the camera and learn what you have in front of you. Going from the D3s to the D4 is like going from Elements to Photoshop.
There are many deep settings and controls that I either never used on the D3s or that were not available. My initial D4 images appeared too soft, until I realized the default configuration is slightly softer of the center setting. I notched this up a bit and the problem went away. Other settings such as contrast and saturation need appropriate adjustment as well. As I said, this is not a camera you turn on and go shoot with. It is basically a computer with intense image processing capabilities. You need to understand what you are holding before going outside.
The D4 with the 85/1.8G lens is noticeably lighter than the D3s with 85/1.8D. The grip is better and the rubber is not as hard, allowing a better purchase on the grip. The D4 is evenly weighted and easy to carry.
Okay let's face it, you want to know the bad stuff. For me this is what I didn't like so much. First, the battery life appears to be less than that of the D3s. I have only taken a few hundred pictures and the battery it at 70% already. I also dearly miss the focus selection switch, going through AF-S, AF-C and Manual. Not with the D4, you lose this. So much for changing settings with one hand. The strap is no fun, get a Domke strap instead and keep the D4 strap in the box. I think I'd have preferred two CF slots and not one slot of each type, but this has never really been a show stopper before. It is just that now I need to carry two card readers with me. Adding on an Ai lens requires you to add the lens to the database in the camera. Not a big deal but you cannot just pop a lens on and shoot.
That's about the extent of my gripes. So buy TWO extra batteries in case you are wondering.

Comments about Nikon D4 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I've been exclusively using Nikon's to make a living since 1971. It is a pleasure to have the flagship model back in my bag.
The handling and control, while a bit different from the D300 I've been using for the last 5 years, are well thought out and right where you need it. Having a full frame sensor is like returning to my 35mm film roots, getting the most out of every Nikkor lens I have. Image-wise, I am speechless! The depth and resolution blew me away, even in the first "family" grab shots. Using this camera at ISO's at 1000 and above for an old dog like me seems impossible, but the results are exceptioal to say the least. The opportunities that that range affords are wonderful. My goal was to use it for video production, but it has rekindled my passion for still photography. I was concerned with what some reviewers had said about the video being soft in full-frame sensor mode, but when I put the D4 side-by-side with my AG-AF100 using the same lens, they match perfectly in my first tests. Sure it doesn't look like 4K, but for 1080P, it will more than do the job. All the other features, timelapse, wireless, truly make this camera the boss! Thanks, Nikon.
Cons: Haven't found one yet.

Just had my first wedding with this camera and I'm beyond impressed. I'm coming from a D2X so obviously the full frame and low noise high iso are the 2 biggest improvements. But the metering, autofocus and dynamic range blew me away. In 3D Matrix metering the camera did an amazing job at picking out my subject I wanted to expose. This is my 3rd flagship DSLR from Nikon and I've never seen sharper autofocus! When I was thumbing through my images on the monitor I was amazed by the detail in my shadows and highlights but I just thought it was an improvement in the monitor but once I got home and blew them up on my computer I couldn't believe that there was detail in my blacks. I can't say enough great things about this camera!

Love the easy access to change mods and functions. I have been asked by friends why do I buy pro gear to photograph kids functions and my answer is always the ease of use. Low light capability is amazing with the Nikon D4 compared to my previous DX camera (Nikon D7000). Should have upgraded to full frame sooner. Definitely recommend this camera.

Got it from the first batch entering my country 2 weeks ago. A very nice update over D3s (which I still keep). Faster autofocus, better button for vertical position. If you used to use D3 dan D3s, you will feel at home once to hold this camera. If you impress with high ISO capability of D3s, you will be surprised with the even better D4. Love it. I never use video feature, but a friend of mine who use D3s has to use Canon 5D Mk2 to make a commercial footage video. I had a plan to buy this 5D Mk2 too, but with the release of D4, I cancel that plan. The RRS L-plate for D3s also fit to D4, so it is nice to save a couple hundred bucks. I still feel strange with XFD card on slot 1, but maybe later on I will get used to it. Need to bring 2 card reader, but some companies will provide integrated card reader soon. I don't like the idea to have different battery with D3s', but what I can say....

I have been shooting with a D2Xs for years and my needs had pushed that platform as far as it could. I was ready to move to the D3s and then the D4 came to market.
This camera as brought my photographic capabilities to new highs. I, along with my friends and clients, are simply stunned by the amazing image quality being captured. If you are reading this you already know the low light capabilities this camera offers, and yes, they will not disappoint. I'm using my D4 for interior design, architecture, landscape, portrait work and fun family shots. It is nothing short of amazing! The dynamic range is stellar. My portrait subjects all comment on how remarkable the skin tones are (right out of the camera). When DX is needed, I use my D7000, but the D4 is the go to tool 95% of the time. Have done little with video, as it is not my main requirement, but test samples have been excellent. The upgrade for me was quantum, and this is likely the last camera I will buy for quite some time. This baby will go in the family Will.
From ergonomics, extensive feature functionality, to it's money making image quality, this is a platform you MUST consider. I could go on and on, but if you are on the fence, take the plunge (yes, it's a costly one), but you will not be sorry.

My first DSLR was a D1 back in late 1999, from there it was D1X and then D2X.
In 2008 I got my first D3 and it was a true revolutionary camera (5 stars) as it rendered DX a dinosaur format.
Certainly the D4 is outstanding but as a piece of technical kit the jump from D2X to the D3 & the D3S was warp speed.
I shoot lots of aviation and flying wildlife and the D4's focusing system still has a ways to go in that area.
Forget all this fine-art-video stuff . . . give me a focusing system that tracks fast moving, long distance targets . . . like a TOW missile.
Maybe they will get it right on the D4S?!

I'm an extreme hobbyist. And this camera has it all. Prior to owning this camera, I was a Canon user. I had the 5D Mk II which is an awesome camera as well. But every Nikon camera has an edge because of the button location. And this D4 is so easy to use. The buttons are just at your figher tips when you need them. No need to go to menu and all that. The first picture I shot of this camera was of my daughter. No flash, at ISO 8000, it was noise-free. Amazingly vivid colors. I was so impressed that I was speechless for a good 20 seconds. This camera doesn't need an introduction. If you buy one, you know you got the best one.

I have just had over a month with both my D4's via NPS and I am very impressed. I previously had two D3's which were incrediable! (2007 launch) The D4's are an evolution over the D3 - the biggest improvement for me is when I need to push the iso for sport the D4 is cleaner at 6400 (but the D3 was great anyway). My work is in London and also in Moscow with my Russian wife, so a pro system that delivers is crucial. I have been Nikon since 1983. For Pro's this is a system that delivers everytime. One thing I don't like is having a missing SD card slot, I'd prefer a choice of having 2 with the cameras.

I love the new Nikon D4. I started with the D3 then the D3s and now the D4. I like the improvements/advancements - 16MP, larger preview screen, improved color/skin tones, lighter body, improved preview function and so on. I would recommend this to any pro user.

I've only had it for a few weeks, but this is a fantastic camera. I've used the D3s and the D700 before it - this is more of an evolutionary step over the D3s than a revolutionary one - but the refinements are still welcome. The weight is ever so slightly less, the extra pixels are welcome, and the backlighting of the control buttons is such a small thing, but a huge help!
