I purchased this lens specifically to use at the wider apertures not for more light per se, but for the very shallow DOF. I plan to use this mostly for close ups such as still life and food shots, shots where I want a very soft background, candid shots in social gatherings and casual portraits. As bonus, it certainly has given me some "breathing room" in low light conditions.
I checked numerous reviews and this lens seemed to measure sharper from F1.4 through F4 than the AF-S 50mm F1.5G lens, which then measured sharper after F4. I don't plan on using this lens much beyond F4 so I choose the AF-D version.
I am currently using this lens on a D80. So we have full frame lens made for 35mm film cameras being used on a DX-format digital camera. I added the Hoya Pro 1 Digital filter to help eliminate internal reflections that the coatings on the newer design lenses are supposed to eliminate. The field of view is of course more like a 75mm on a film camera so you do get slight image compression you might expect from a telephoto in that range. The slight image compression and effective length of 75mm presents both advantages and challenges.
Personally, I LOVE the color and contrast rendering of the AF-D lenses more so than the modern AF-S lenses. I am sure this will be a minority opinion. At F1.4 I was not expecting razor sharp and it is not, though it is sharp enough for what I wanted. Stopped down a bit it seems as sharp as my other (more modern design) lenses. At wide apertures, the colors are very natural and not overly saturated or contrasty...which is precisely what I wanted.
The bokeh can at times exhibit some "outlines" or appear busy or jagged, though I find this much as the same as on the AF 50mm F1.8D lens that I have tried.
Focus is as fast and accurate as my other lenses. I purchased the Grey Market version. The lens is currently doing everything I had hoped for. Being relatively new to using a DSLR I am looking forward to exploring the world at F1.4!

I usually shy away from primes, but the small size and large aperture made this one appealing since I shoot at crowded club events. After a few weeks of use, I find that the lens is very sharp stopped down to F/2.8, but at 1.4 images are very soft. Focus is accurate and fast, a definite plus, but that's where all the good ends. I'm disappointed with the build quality as the lens just feels too plastic. It just doesn't compare to any of the newer nikkor primes, such as the 60mm AF-S or the 85mm PC-E. Also, the bokeh is a bit harsh due to the 7 bladed design. The lens is prone to CA and flaring, so you have to be careful when shooting in certain conditions. Overall, I'm not too impressed, but the small size and speed of this lens makes it useful for club shoots. Nikon seriously needs to update some of there primes and this lens would be a good start.

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:
I bought this as a gift for one of my biggest clients since he had just bought a D700. He loved it right away. The bokeh was buttery. The sharpness and color rendition were great. He was very impressed at the picture quality even in comparison to the 24-70mm f2.8 Nikkor.

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens because my other lenses struggle in low light conditions. The way this lens handles low light is really impressive. A 50mm lens is a must-have for all photographers-so says Ken Rockwell. Get one and you won't be let down.

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:
This is my first lens upgrade from the standard lens that came with my Nikon D90, and I am very pleased. I tried both the 85mm 1.4 as well as this one, and although the difference is notable, it's not worth spending 3x more. I use this lens primarily for street photography and fashion portraits. It's also worth noting that the bokeh is BEAUTIFUL.

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:
This is a great lens for capturing images the way your eyes see them. It's also light and inconspicuous making it ideal for street photography. Best of all though, it performs brilliantly in low light situations. I have used this lens under near dark conditions without a tripod and I never have to worry about camera blur. Also great for portrait photography. Opening up the aperture to 1.4 will vaporize the background and deliver crystal clear images that seem to pop off the screen. Highly recommended.

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:
I use this lens evrywhere, except on a very Sunny day when i want to take landcape photos, then I take my 18-135 lens.
I love that there is no need for flash almost at all, and the photos come out very proffessional.
The only problem is that the field is fixed (no zoom), this is pretty limiting, but you know it when you buy this lens.

I shoot a lot of rock concerts and this lens is unstoppable in the low light. Plus, it's an amazing portrait lens. For the money, you can't buy faster or sharper glass.

I use the f1.4 50mm for publishable images of action indoors. So far I have only a few shoots and find it meets my expectations capturing faces and nearby unevenly lighted still life. No concerns relative to design or weight.

Comments about Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:
By far a superior build quality to the 1.8D, and much more acceptable while still being a plastic made lens. Obviously the plastic feel can't compare to the old MF Nikkors, but it's most definitely a step up from the 1.8D and will provide you with the fast autofocus you might desire on a new DSLR.
I needed a lens that I had manual control over for usage on my Nikon FM2n, and the 1.8D was too difficult to manually focus due to its shaky and unsmooth focus ring. The 1.4D is definitely a much smoother and better construction than the 1.8D, which left me very satisfied.
The performance of this lens is both contrasty and sharp. Peak performance lies around after f/2 or 2.8, but I was shocked by the contrasty nature of the lens, it's excellent. The lens is a bit soft wide open, but honestly most 50mm Nikkors will give you this results and I wasn't expected any different. I bought this lens so I can get great results from 2 and beyond, and only use 1.4 in extreme situations.
Definitely a great buy for the price, and if you need a lens to complement both a DSLR and a film body (my D700 and a FM2n) then this lens will leave you very satisfied with the manual focus abilities and still having an aperture ring. Lastly, it is most definitely a step up from it's little brother and I think it was worth the price to upgrade.

Great lens that performed exactly how I wanted. It was definitely a step up from the 1.8D and provides some very contrasty and sharp images right out of the lens. Best performer when stopped down a bit to at least f/2.

First of all this is excellent lens, although I have return it.
I brought my friends 500mm F/1.8G and carried out some test results. F/1.8G performs exceptionally well. The results were shocking. Also F/1.8G is cheaper then F/1.4D. So its worth buying it.
