Canon has just introduced four new additions to their expansive line of PowerShot point-and-shoot cameras, including a newly, uniquely designed model, the PowerShot N. These cameras build on Canon’s successes of providing high image quality, simple functionality and compact form factors into their PowerShot lineup.
The PowerShot N, available in black or white, features an innovative new design that provides more creative freedom and intuitiveness when shooting. The compact form factor revolves around a 2.8-inch TFT color tilt capacitive touch screen LCD and a lens that is surrounded by two control rings for omnipresent shutter and zoom control. This camera is designed around the premise that it can be held in any direction during shooting and easily controlled with the dual-ring configuration. The outermost ring controls the shutter, which can be released at any point on the ring, and the innermost ring controls the zoom of the 28-244mm (35mm equivalent) f/3.0-5.9 lens. The 2.8" capacitive touch screen monitor offers an intuitive method for navigating menus, and its 90° tiltable design makes it ideal for viewing from high or low angles.
In regard to the imaging capabilities of the PowerShot N, it features a 12.1MP CMOS image sensor that works in collaboration with the DIGIC 5 image processor to provide high-quality imagery and performance. The combination of this sensor and processor form the Canon HS SYSTEM, which aids in producing clear, detailed imagery in low-light settings, due in part to the high maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400. This low-light sensitivity is further benefitted by an integrated Optical Image Stabilizer that uses a lens-shift mechanism to counter the effects of camera shake. Furthermore, image stabilization can be applied automatically in myriad ways using Intelligent IS. This IS system will automatically analyze the way in which you are moving, or not moving your camera, to select one of six different methods to best reduce the effects of camera blur. The DIGIC 5 image processor also contributes greatly to providing a continuous shooting rate of 2.3 fps, full HD 1080p video capabilities, and advanced camera functions and scene modes. Creative Shot mode is a newly introduced working mode that intelligently applies artistic presets to your imagery in order to produce aesthetic results. Rather than applying a series of filters to an image, this mode analyzes individual elements of each picture, including the scene type and exposure settings, and then generates five unique variations of the original.
Expanding the PowerShot N’s efficiency even further, this camera supports Wi-Fi connectivity to allow instant sharing of images and video directly from your camera. Connectable to both Android and iOS devices, you can freely share your imagery between devices using the Canon CameraWindow app, and then easily upload to social networking sites using CANON iMAGE GATEWAY. The Wi-Fi ability also affords you the opportunity to wirelessly back up image files to your computer. When searching for a wireless-compatible device, the Mobile Device Connect Button provides a one-touch solution for searching for enabled smartphones or tablets and quickly connecting with them.
The PowerShot ELPH 130 IS, which is available in gray, silver and red, is a compact point and shoot that features a 16MP CCD sensor and DIGIC 4 image processor to produce high-quality imagery, that is easily shareable due to built-in wireless connectivity. The combination of the sensor and processor can render still photographs and 720p HD movies with high clarity and detail, even in low-light conditions. Also benefitting low-light shooting is the Intelligent IS system, which automatically detects the shooting situation—Normal, Panning, Macro, or Tripod—and applies appropriate stabilization techniques to reduce the effects of camera shake. The built-in 8x optical zoom lens gives a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-224mm, providing you with a wide range of focal lengths for shooting in almost any situation. Contributing further to producing sound imagery, Smart AUTO is available and utilizes 32 predefined shooting situations to apply camera settings to help render scenes with the utmost clarity.
All of the imaging enhancements and quality this camera affords can be instantly showcased by utilizing the built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. Similar to the PowerShot N, the ELPH 130 IS can connect easily to Android and iOS devices for sharing imagery and uploading to social networking sites or image-hosting sites.
The last two models introduced by Canon fall into their A-series and also provide impressive imaging capabilities with easy-to-use functionality. The A2600, available in pink, silver, red, blue and black, and the black-only A1400 both feature 16MP image sensors with DIGIC 4 image processors. Like the ELPH 130 IS, this combination provides notable image quality and low-light performance to an expandable ISO 6400. They both feature a 35mm-equivalent 28-140mm lens to cover a wide range of focal lengths and have Digital IS image stabilization to further benefit shooting in dimly lit locations by correcting for unwanted camera shake. Aside from still imagery, these cameras are capable of recording HD 720p movies with added convenience with the inclusion of a dedicated movie button. Smart AUTO and an array of Scene Modes, including Super Vivid, Poster Effect, Miniature Effect and Toy Camera Effect, are also integrated into these cameras’ designs to help achieve highly desirable imagery.

Separating the two cameras from each other, the A2600 includes a larger 3.0" TFT LCD monitor compared to the A1400’s 2.7" TFT LCD monitor. However, the A1400 does integrate an optical viewfinder into its design to help compose imagery in bright situations. The A2600 accepts a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for power, whereas the A1400 is powered by AA batteries. Both cameras feature Canon’s new ECO mode to help conserve battery life for longer shooting sessions.
