Canon has just announced two new Rebel DSLRs, the EOS Rebel T5i and the EOS Rebel SL1, both of which are poised to be compact DSLRs that will deliver impressive imaging performance. Additionally, a new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens has been announced. This lens, which is designed specifically for use with APS-C-sized sensors, adds a level of refinement to the existing 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens and matches the new features of these two cameras well. In addition to the DSLRs and lens being announced, a new member of the point-and-shoot PowerShot family has also been announced: the SX280 HS. This camera succeeds the popular SX260 HS and adds a new level of imaging performance and integrated wireless connectivity.

Canon EOS Rebel SL1

The new EOS Rebel SL1 is a highly compact and lightweight DSLR that features a large 18 megapixel APS-C CMOS image sensor and DIGIC 5 Image Processor for producing impressive image quality and high low-light sensitivity to an expandable ISO 25600. The DIGIC 5 processor contributes greatly to achieving notable image quality when working in low light, and also offers great speed throughout the camera, including a maximum continuous shooting rate of 4 fps. Full HD 1080p movie recording is supported, too, in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps, as well as HD 720p video at 60 fps. While recording video, the Movie Servo AF system enables continuous autofocusing with subject-tracking capabilities, and manual exposure control is available for greater control over the look and feel of the movies. A built-in monaural microphone handles the sound recording, and manual audio level adjustment is available as well, for enhanced control.

Benefitting both still and moving imagery, a nine-point AF system is used to acquire focus accurately, and a high precision, dual-cross f/2.8 center point allows especially precise focusing capabilities. When working in live view, for either still shooting or video recording, a new Hybrid CMOS AF II system is employed to combine the precision-oriented benefits of contrast-detection focusing with the speed of phase-detection focusing for faster, defter, overall focusing abilities. The 3.0” 1,040k-dor Clear View touch-screen LCD monitor II also features Touch AF, which provides the ability to simply touch anywhere on the screen to pinpoint focus position, for use in creative selective focus applications or when working with busy backgrounds and subject matter.

The touch-screen functionality also gives way to intuitive menu navigation and playback control for applying camera features and modes, such as Scene Intelligent Mode, as well as the new Effect Shot mode and Background Simulation.

In addition to being available as a body only, the EOS Rebel SL1 is also available in a kit with the newly announced EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. The combination of the SL1 and this lens is an ideal system to use for travel and everyday shooting applications, due to their individual and combined light weight and small form factors.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is the updated kit lens that has been specifically designed for use with Canon APS-C-sized image sensors. It provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28.8-88mm to cover wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. This lens separates itself from past 18-55mm iterations by its inclusion of Canon’s STM stepping focus motor, which fully supports the use of the Movie Servo AF mode to produce quiet, smooth, fast and accurate focusing abilities, which are particularly beneficial when recording HD movies. Also contributing to sharper movie recording is a dedicated image stabilization mode, Dynamic IS, which can account for a greater variety of camera movements and provide an enhanced level of reduction of the effects of camera shake. When working with still imagery, a four-stop equivalent Optical Image Stabilizer system is also available for minimizing the appearance of more traditional camera shake that can occur when working in dimly lit conditions, or at the longer end of the zoom range.

One UD (ultra-low dispersion) and one high-precision aspheric lens are integrated into the lens design to help lessen chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range and provide greater color fidelity and image contrast. Optimized lens coatings are also applied to lens elements to help achieve greater light transmission, higher contrast, and to reduce lens flare and ghosting.

Canon EOS Rebel T5i

Combining speed, imaging abilities and efficiency, the EOS Rebel T5i is the new flagship Rebel DSLR, and with it comes an 18 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 Image Processor to provide high-resolution imagery with expandable low-light sensitivity to ISO 25600. The image processor also integrates a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter to produce smooth image quality, which is especially apparent when working with higher ISO sensitivities in difficult lighting conditions. The processing prowess also provides notable speed throughout the camera system that enables continuous shooting up to 5 fps and full HD video recording in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps. When recording HD movies, full-time continuous autofocusing with subject tracking is possible in the Movie Servo AF mode, and manual exposure and audio control is also possible for more refined control over the look and feel of movie recordings.

The built-in 3.0” 1,040k-dot Clear View touch-screen LCD monitor features a vari-angle design that enables extensive positioning capabilities to better suit working from high and low angles, as well as aiding in composing self-portraits. The monitor’s touch-screen functionality also gives way to intuitive menu navigation and playback control, as well as the Touch AF interface, which enables precise control as to exactly where in the frame it focuses. The focus system itself utilizes an array of nine cross-type points, including one high precision, dual-cross f/2.8 central point, for effectively acquiring focus. When working in live view, the imaging sensor (Hybrid CMOS AF) also contributes to the focusing performance by enabling both phase- and contrast-detection focusing methods, to achieve sharp focus quickly and precisely.

For refining the look of imagery, a host of imaging modes and features are available ranging from intelligent autoexposure systems to creative effects. Scene Intelligent Auto Mode works to produce highly accurate exposure settings based on an analysis of the scene, resulting in aesthetically pleasing, well-rendered imagery. When working in difficult lighting conditions, Handheld Night Scene mode, HDR Backlight Control, and Multi-Shot Noise Reduction all work to produce images with exceptional quality by layering and compositing several exposures into one frame. Additionally, seven Creative Filters are available for use, and their effects can be displayed in real time when working in live view.

Canon EOS Rebel T5i with EF-S 18-55mm Canon EOS Rebel T5i with EF-S 18-135mm

The EOS Rebel T5i is available as a body only or in a kit with either the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens or the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Both of these lenses are ideal choices for use in a wide variety of shooting situations, as they range from wide-angle to telephoto perspectives and feature compact, lightweight designs. Both lenses also incorporate Canon’s STM stepping focus motor to provide notably smooth, quiet focusing performance that is especially well suited to HD video applications.

Canon PowerShot SX280 HS

The SX280 HS, available in black or red, features a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor that is paired with the newly introduced DIGIC 6 Image Processor. The combination of these two technologies works to produce high resolution, well-detailed imagery with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 6400. The processing abilities of the new DIGIC 6 also produce the Canon HS SYSTEM, which works intelligently to diminish the appearance of noise when working with higher sensitivities and, in turn, create higher-quality imagery when working in dimly lit conditions. In addition to still-imaging performance, the SX280 HS supports full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps for fluid motion rendering. Aiding the sensor and processor is a built-in 20x optical zoom lens that provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25-500mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide range of scenarios. An Optical Image Stabilizer system is available, too, to help minimize the effects of camera shake when working in low-light conditions or with greater zoom magnifications.

For intelligently handling exposure and camera settings, Smart AUTO mode is available, to select from 58 predefined shooting situations in order to optimize camera settings. The Face ID function also contributes to Smart AUTO by helping to achieve sharp focus and proper exposure on pre-registered faces to ensure clear, detailed portraiture. A Hybrid Auto function is available, which utilizes Smart AUTO as well as the Intelligent IS (image stabilization) system to produce crisp, clear four-second HD 720p video clips when working in Movie Digest mode. The four-second clips are automatically recorded every time a still image is taken to provide additional insight and context into the resulting photographs. The Intelligent IS system that is employed in this function works to reduce the effects of camera shake, and can select from six different stabilization modes: Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid IS), Tripod IS, Dynamic (video only) and Powered (video only).

Benefitting all of the imaging technologies within the SX280 HS is built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, which enables instant sharing of image files to social networking sites via the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY. Additionally, transferring of imagery to a PC and to an Android or iOS device is also supported when used in conjunction with the Canon CameraWindow app. A GPS module is also integrated into the camera’s design to benefit travel photography and geo-tagging possibilities for recording locational information within the metadata of each image file. When used in combination with the included Canon software, tracking and pinpointing of each shot is possible on a map.

Hi,
Any information on the audio recording capacity of this camera? The Rebel T5i; I mean.

The EOS Rebel T5i features a built-in microphone with manual audio level control as well an a mini mic input for attaching other mics.

Hello guys.

Do you have any news for EOS 70D? Specs? Release date? Price?

Thanks!

Hello,

No sorry, but we will post as soon as we hear anything official from Canon USA.

I can't wait to pre-order the T5i. It will be my first dslr.

Will the new Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens work with eos d550 and d7?

The lens will mount to the 2 camera bodies but the STM focus feature will not function on non-STM cameras.

Non-STM cameras, being all other than the Rebel T5i, T4i & SL-1 ... right?

Yes, that's correct. Currently the 3 models you listed are the only STM compatible models on the market.

To be clear, the STM functionality is not reverse-compatible, correct? My 24-105/4 L series lens will not be able to auto-focus?

Hello,

Correct, "STM functionality" depends on both a supporting camera body and lens to work.

I have to correct what you said. He was asking if his L lens would NOT work and you said correct.

That is TOTALLY WRONG. That lens will work fine on all of the T series cameras, the STM lens won't have all of it's features on other cameras.

Why Canon had to muddy up the waters again with the M series, the STM series, etc is beyond me. I have been a loyal Canon user since a TLb but have picked a Nikon D series to play with, and it sure is nice to be able to use every lens ever made by Nikon on it even if just in Manual mode with no adapters needed.

Is the manual focus on the SX280 on the ring? I'm so disappointed with the 'manual focus' push button on my Lumix FZ150.

Hello,

Neither a demo or manual is available for this new camera. I checked the SX260 and manual focusing is done via the controls on the back of the camera. I doubt this would be different on the SX280.

PowerShot SX260 manual Page 125.

Can I ask about what country made SL1 and 18-55mm lens kit
Made in japan ?
thank you

Hello Dienson -

The new Canon EOS Rebel SL1 is manufactured by Canon in Taiwan.   The  CANON EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is made there as well.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:  AskBH@BandH.com

Do any of these two SLRs have multiple exposure capability?

Based on the released information from Canon it appears that neither the T5i nor the SL1 has multiple exposure capability.

Both the SL1 and the T5i have 1/8" mic inputs.

What is the major difference between T4i and New T5i? What is the price difference.?
Will the new Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens work with T4i?
thanks

Hello,

The T4i and T5i are very similar. They share: 18MP CMOS sensor, 9-point cross-type AF sensor,Hybrid AF and a 3"vari-angle LCD screen.

700D features real-time preview of Creative Filters in Live View mode,a redesigned mode dial that can be turned 360 degrees and a new body finish.

The new Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens will work with the T4i.

Pretty Rediculous that a point and shoot camera can shoot 1080 at 60fps but not the superior DSLR models... What was Canon thinking there? I usually have to shoot 720p 60fps and scale it to 1080 which loses quality. When is Canon going to release a DSLR that can shoot 1080 at 60fps?

My speculation is the small size of the sensor on the PowerShot makes it an easier feature to add onto the camera. Outside of that I am not sure why Canon has not added this as a feature on any of their HDSLR line.

Uh Digic 6 vs Digic 5?? see any difference there? That explains why and also tells us what we should be seeing in the next generation of DSLR's

So the main differences (performance rather than features) in the DSLRs are burst rates and battery ?

Hello,

Both the T5i and SL1 are very similar 18MP cameras. The T5i is regarded as the "Flagship Rebel" while the SL1 is geared towards compactness. They both share an 18MP 22.3 x 14.9mm (APS-C) sensor with a DIGIC 5 Image Processor, RAW capabilities and a pop up flash with expanded ISO to 25600. The full featured T5i has - 9 AF points all cross type at f/5.6, center is diagonal cross-type at f/2.8. Up to 5 fps, stereo audio recording, Pop up flash is IR commander, Vari-angle TFT-LCD with Touch Panel LCD (capacitive type) and anti-smudge coating.

SX-280 is available for pre-order? When will it be available for shipping to customers?

Canon is permitting us to accept pre-orders on the camera. They have not yet indicated when we can expect for them to arrive to fulfill the pre-orders. Hopefully once we return from our upcoming holiday closing Canon will be able to give us a more definitive date of arrival.

I am disabled and I was wondering if the SL1 has a flip out screen? The T5i looks like it has one.

Hello,

No, the Sl1 does not have a flip out LCD like the T5i.

I am surprised the SL1 does not shoot RAW.

Hello,

It does, we fixed our spec sheet.

Touch screen? I certainly hope that Canon doesn't start adding touch screens to their professional lineup, I prefer the controls where they are and I don't need the viewfinder getting all smeared up.

I suppose it's a cool feature for Soccer Moms.

I have an SX260 HS and use it as much as my DSLR. It will shoot video at 1080/24fps or 720 and 480/30fps. I see that the SX280 HS only has 1080 or 720 at 60fps? It would be really nice if this camera included a jack for an external mic since the built in one is useless, terrible audio recording. Hopefully they have included a PRINTED user manual which is more user friendly and clearly written. I have no need for WiFi so why upgrade to an SX280 HS ?

Hello;

The new Canon SX280 records video in 1920 x 1080: 60fps, 30fps (29.97)
1280 x 720: 30fps (29.97). There is no mic input available.

The big improvement in the SX280 is the next generation DIGIC 6 image processor.

According to Canon USA:

*Record full HD movies at up to 60fps
*Movies are recorded in the web friendly MP4 format
*ISO sensitivity, up to ISO 6400
*Shoot in low light conditions and get up to 30% more detail1 without the need to use a flash or tripod.
*7.5 cm (3.0") PureColor II G LCD
*Hybrid Auto; Smart Auto

Will it come with a PRINTED user manual ? How long of a movie clip will the buffer store when shooting at 1920 x 1080 30fps using a SanDisc 16GB class 10 45MB/s SD card ? 12 minutes or ? Sure wish they could improve the mic location and quality.

Hello,

Sorry I missed your "PRINTED user manual" question. At this time, we do not know what Canon will include. A 16gb card will hold aprox 90 minutes of AVCHD quality video and as far as we know, the memory card will limit the video length.

With my PowerShot SX260 HS I can only shoot 16 minutes maximum in 1080p until the buffer is full and the camera stops. You can keep shooting 16 minute segments until the card is filled. One thing also is the small battery, short life and $50+ for a spare from Canon! The generic battery does not last as long on a charge.

Do either of these DSLRs have an audio input?

Hello,

They both have a 3.5mm stereo mic input.

Just wondering what is the continuos time length of the video recording? (for example: Mark II does about 12 minutes in HD and then stops)
Is it able to record video continuously/only dependant on the size of the memory card?

Hello,

Like all current DSLR's, the camera is limited to 20-30 minutes of video. The vintage of the 5DmkII was 12 minutes at the time it was released.

I have the T4I it shoots 30 minute videos weather I have a 16gb or 32gb card in it.

As incredible as it seems, DSLR manufacturers have to limit video recording time to under 30 minutes (29m59s is OK) --- due to a heavy European Union CAMCORDER import tax that kicks in at 30 minutes. IE, anything that records 30 minutes and longer is considered a video camera. I suspect this tax was implemented to protect the German video recorder industry. (Siemens, for one)
