Fujifilm has just announced a new lens for their X series cameras, the XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS. This new lens stands as the longest lens in the current XF lineup and picks up where their first zoom lens, the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS, leaves off. Encompassing a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 84-305mm, this lens serves to bridge portrait length to true telephoto perspectives and integrates several mechanical features in order to produce sharp, clear imagery.

The construction of the XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS incorporates 14 elements in 10 groups, which includes one aspherical element, one ED (extra-low dispersion element) and one Super ED element. The aspherical element works to counteract a variety of aberrations and distortions, and the extra-low dispersion lenses specifically function to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range; both resulting in higher overall image quality and clarity. Additionally, an HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) multi-layer coating has also been applied to lens elements to further enhance performance and light transmission by reducing lens flare and ghosting. This coating enables a 99.8% transmittance rate to deliver consistent, uniform colors and values across the entire visible spectrum.

Dual linear motors are incorporated into the lens to benefit both the autofocusing system as well as the image stabilization system precisely and efficiently. For controlling the focus of the lens, the motors work to silently and smoothly move lens elements to gain focus quickly, with the utmost precision. In similar fashion, the motors also work to control the image-stabilization unit to provide a responsive and noticeable reduction in the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter-speed steps. The quiet and fluid movement is ideally suited to video applications, as well as fast-paced shooting or other instances, where focus is being changed quickly and often. Additionally, the image-stabilization system greatly benefits close-up shooting in macro mode, for focusing as close as 3.6’ with 0.18x magnification.

As with previous XF lenses, this lens features a minimalistic black metal lens barrel and a manual aperture ring with 1/3-step detents. The enhanced tactility of the lens is in line with the entire X series of both cameras and lenses and is equally functional as it is aesthetic.

This lens will prove to be a valuable addition to an existing collection of XF lenses; its long reach coupled with highly efficient linear motors and advanced optical design make it suitable for working in a variety of conditions and for rendering imagery with the notable clarity, sharpness and consistency.
