Hands-On Review: Sony A7 II

01/20/2015Link5

In the following video, Larry Becker, of KelbyOne, presents an overview of the Sony Alpha a7II mirrorless digital camera, and covers its updates and distinctions from its predecessor, the a7, as well as the other a7-series cameras. The video begins by touching on some ergonomic and physical changes, including a new metal body design, enhanced grip, and forward-angled shutter-release button. From here, Becker reviews the five-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system, and describes how it performs with a wide array of lenses. The video then segues into the updated video quality, with XAVC S support, and then covers the 24.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor, BIONZ image processor, and other key shooting attributes. The video wraps up with a brief introduction to the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA lens and highlights the key points of the a7-series’ different models. We hope you enjoy the video, and invite you to view the wide selection of other instructional and informative videos at B&H.com.

Hi, I bought the Sony a7 II from B&H in early February and I’ve been using it for both stills and video.  I love it.  But yesterday I ran into a problem I can’t solve:  I intended to film an event with attached shotgun mic, a mic I’ve used many times before.  Video quality was great, but no audio showed up at the bottom of the monitor.  The digital time read-out and the video recording worked fine, but no audio.

I took the shotgun mic out and still no audio showed up.  I brought the camera home, downloaded footage to Premier Pro, and still no audio comes through.  I checked the settings for audio in the Menu and everything is On.  What happened to the audio?  I’m leaving for a trip in two weeks, so I hope there’s an easy fix—something I’m not seeing.  Thanks for your advice!

Hi Robert -

Be sure to replace the battery in your microphone (if it uses one) and check the integrity of your connecting cable.

You can adjust the audio recording level by monitoring the level meter.

Access from the MENU button > (Camera Settings) > [Audio Rec Level].

Why is the sound synch always off in these vids?

its a shame that Sony make these great cameras but don't support them.  my A7R was damaged by water.  I had to prepay $800 to get them to look at it.  A week later, they advised it is not repairable.  None of my $800 has been returned and no one is returning my email inquiries.

The amount of water that killed my A7R was minimal compared to what my Fuji and Canon camers have been subjected to with no issue.
