Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 Overview

The black, Sony E-Mount Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS Lens is a prime wide-angle lens designed specifically for use with APS-C sized image sensors. Providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm and a broad 98.9° angle of view, this lens is well-suited for architectural, interior, and landscape images. Its fast f/2.0 maximum aperture is further beneficial to working in low-light conditions.

Three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements have been incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortion in order to produce sharper images. Additionally, a Nano Coating System (NCS) has been applied to the lens elements in order to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved light transmission and more contrast-rich imagery

I bought this lens as an inexpensive option for wide angle landscapes and found it to be a surprisingly wonderful lens to shoot with. Its image quality is quite impressive for the cost, with very little distortion. I noticed some minor vignetting at wider F-stops but still pretty minor. I was surprised by its sturdy feeling as well. It is not as solid as an aluminum bodied lens, but the lens itself feels sturdy and well made. I was surprised to find that the lens i bought to capture wide angle landscapes became one of my favorites for street photography. The only thing I would add is autofocus.

When using this lens, I get black corners in my pictures, it looks like I am looking thru a tube, is there something wrong with lens, or am I doing something wrong? The viewfinder also shows this black distortion.

Sony makes both APS-C and full frame cameras that use the Sony E-Mount. If you are using an APS-C camera and see black corners, something may be wrong and you might want to get it serviced. If you are using it on a full-frame camera then you bought the wrong lens for your camera. The primary symptom of using this lens on a full-frame camera would be vignetting, a darkening of edges and especially dark corners.

I have a question for anybody who uses this lens with E-m10 or E-m10 II. When using the camera built-in flash do you get a shade at the bottom of the picture if let's say the subject is 5 feet away? If yes, how much of the picture does it cover: 10%, 20%, 30%? I use the following trick for flash photos: I take the shot with 4:3 format and crop the pic to 3:2 format and remove the bottom shaded part.

you are getting a shade because the flash is being partially hidden by the lens hood. this is common with wide angle lens hoods
