I am a professional sports cinematographer, videographer and photographer who gets to play all day with lenses in the $20,000 to $200,000 range, so I’m usually disappointed with many of the cheaper SLR lenses that I have encountered. This is not one of them.
This lens is a whole lot of fun. I borrowed one from a Canon rep at a car show and went to town with it. It allows me to over-emphasize detail in an unusual but natural way. It also makes it easier to photograph in any public exhibit environment because this lens allows me to move forward of all the lookie-loos that would otherwise be in my way. My daughter actually won the event photo contest at that car show using this lens: Big embarrassment for dad.
Two weeks later I bought one from B&H. I’ve used it with great results on my 20D (1.6x) and my 1D Mark IIn (1.3x), but it now lives permanently on my 5D (1x).
This lens is great for all aspects of landscape photography. I especially like it for sunsets, where the sky can light up clear over my head. On my full 35mm sensor 5D, this lens has a diagonal corner-to-corner viewing angle of 180 degrees. People standing next to me look confused when I ask them to please step back out of my shot.
A discussion on distortion is pretty much irrelevant, because this is why we buy fisheye lenses; however, I will say that the distortion is mild and not overbearing.
This lens gives me corner-to-corner sharpness, even at a wide aperture. I don’t find the auto focus slow at all, but it is noisy. You have to keep in mind that this is not an L Series (Professional) lens; although, I wish Canon would make it one, with a magnesium housing and an ultrasonic motor.
The discussions on full time manual focus are confusing. This lens does have full time manual focus, at the flip of a switch. It does not have manual focus override when in auto focus mode, a feature that many L Series lenses do have.
Filter freaks will realize right away that filter changes in the field will not be fun. This lens uses a rear gel-type filter that requires removal of the lens, a move that can be detrimental to digital dust magnets (CMOS Sensors) in the field.
As mentioned before, the lens cap is a big bummer. It is a non-flexible metal cap that can scratch the front element if you aren’t looking when you put it on. It will also scratch up the outer edge of your non-removable lens hood (learn to live with it), and it will fall of constantly! My fix is to take a 1” x ¼” sliver of Velcro, the soft side, and adhere it inside the edge of your cap. This will apply just enough pressure to keep it on, and still allow you to easily take it off and then put it back on again.
The bottom line is that this lens is a must. It will bring you lots of photographic enjoyment; and, as in my case, possibly a few extra dollars profit as well.
Buy it!

I'm very dissapointed about this lens. I bought it as used from B&H Used store, but the lens is absolutely soft, especially in corners and at ANY aperture. Stopping down helps just a very little, the corners remains blurry.
I've find it as unusable at any condition, it was a very bad buy.

Use it for wedding photography to give that unique look for certain pics. Decided to purchase this lens rather than the new 8-15 for 2 reasons...f2.8 and price. I am very pleased. AF is a little noisy, but that's expected for a lens that was made back in late 1980's. Perfect for 5d mark ii. On my 1d mark iv, it still has that "edgy" wide look...but on full-frame, you get those fishy pics.

The fisheye takes me away from my usual type of photos, and I am learning to see differently as a result of this experience. It took me over a week to decide to keep it, and I plan to use it only for specialied portfolios, but it is fun. As for the lens, it's sharp, light, and easy to use. And, for me, it's affordable enough to decide to keep it. Far from a must, it is taking some time to learn how to fit it into my style. But I'm learning and enjoying the process.

Great little lens ! Quality of images seems to be as good as any of my "L" class lenses. This lens is one of my top two favorites. My other favorite is my prime, 200 x f/1.8

when used with a 60D it gives you a sort of wide angle effect which is very intriguing, beautiful angles and a pop to your shots when taken closed.

This is a lens I have been waiting to get to complement my current camera gear and to use on my 5Dmk2.
With this lens it gives me more creative options when paired with my other lenses of choice. When shooting events, or night clubs, where it's crowded I can swap between my 16-35 2.8L and fisheye add variety to the sets. Also being a fast lens, it's useful for when you really need to open it up for those dark situations.
I am a big fan of the L lens version, but the @ f2.8, being a prime, and for the price, it made it an easy sell.

I bought this lens because I knew what it was.
A mid-grade relatively fast fisheye.
I do mostly nightlife photography and this is a great addition when I want the fisheye effect on my full frame body.
This is the only non- L lens I own.. and had the new 8-15mmL been out I would have probably bought that instead :)
The lens is not a tank - it feels cheap compared to some of canons other 500+ EF glass.
The focus is really noisy and clunky - but it gets the job done and the results are beautiful!

I use a Canon 40D which is not a full frame camera and this lens is for a full frame camera. With that in mind I was unsure how i would like the pictures. I do night club photography and with the crop frame it gave just enough effect but not over bearing to wear i could use the lens the whole night and not get tired of seeing the fisheye effect.
its a fast lens, its noisy(loud) but that doesn't bother me fast focus and very clean. If you are looking for a lens that gets alot of people in the picture and you don't have a wide angle lens this is a great purchase to be able to stand close or a few feet away to give the effect of a normal picture or close up for the fisheye effect.
I am very happy with this lens no regrets.

As a Wedding Cinematographer I say this is a perfect match. 60D has a crop factor of 1.6x, that makes this a 24mm with little distortion (of course if you take this too close to a person it will fail doing a nice scene). Great depth of field makes this a great use in glidecams and steadycams.

This is a great lens to have if you have an arsenal of other lenses. Unless you are a pro, semi-pro, or photo enthusiast, this is a great lens to have. However, this wouldn't be a good lens to have if you only have one lens. Additionally, I like to use UV filters to protect my lenses, but you can't use one (or any filter) on this lens.
I enjoy this lens and I have a lot of fun with it and if you're in the market for a fisheye, this is the one to get!
