Ok, this is one you are just going to have to hit Add to Cart and stop thinking about it. I read the many reviews and comparisons of this lens along with the Canon 28mm f/1.8 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Lest you think it is a difficult decision and you want to pay more money then stop reading. Otherwise buy this lens you won't regret it.

Sure it is not the best built lens in the lineup, but it would be hard to say after handling it that the 28mm f/1.8 is built any better. Unless you are traveling in the Amazon or repelling down Everest it will hold up just fine.

It is true, the focusing of this lens is loud. In fact the first time I heard it is was almost startlingly loud like something was wrong with it. It emits a higher pitched whining noise than the Canon 50 f/1.8 mkII. You get used to it though, to the point that you don't notice it. Not a deal breaker by any means in my opinion. Despite the loudness and not being a USM motor it focuses just as fast.

On to the optical performance...WOW! I was blown away at how sharp this lens was on my 40D. Sharp edge to edge and to the very tip of the corners. Definitely sharper than my 17-40 f/4L. Colors and contrast are also very good and saturation is high but not overly so. Colors are accurate and allow for plenty of color detail adjustments in software later. The detail, both in color and resolution, is really impressive even wide open at f/2 and just gets even better around f/5.6-f/8. Alot of information is recorded with this lens, a real winner. I would say it is at least as sharp as the Canon 50mm f/1.8II, if not sharper. Both likely exceed the resolution capabilities of your camera, unless maybe if you own a 50D.

It is roughly 56mm on a 1.6x crop body which certainly feels the same as the Canon 50mm f/1.8II on my old Elan 7. You do not have quite the same depth of field as the 50 1.8 because the crop cannot make up for that or simulate that plus the 35 is one stop slower. In all practicality this will serve the normal lens role very well.

Most manufacturer's 50mm lenses are slightly longer than that to allow for better portraits. They often actually measure 54-57mm in the lab, so this lens as 56mm on a 1.6 body more closely approximates a normal prime than the 28 does. The 28 definitely feels a bit wider than a 50mm should. So I feel, based on focal length alone, this lens is the best choice.

Based on this lens's performance compared to the Canon 28's and Sigma 30mm and based on its lower cost, I think this qualifies as a no brainier. So stop reading comparison charts, buy this lens, and go out and shoot.

BTW, the barrel does extend about a centimeter during focusing, but it does not rotate so a screw in polarizer is easy to use. The dedicated focusing ring helps alot compared to the nub on the end of the 50 f/1.8II.

I got this to use as a "normal" lens for my 40d. It is a little slow focusing in low light and the picture quality is just OK. But for the price [...] it serves the purpose. The plastic is cheesy and the focus ring is loose feeling , it's not the "L" but not the price either.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

I've had this lens for more than 10 years and bought it to use on my film cameras. Nowadays, I mostly use it on my 5D. It's a really light and compact 35mm lens. It's a bit soft at the edges when wide open, so I generally use it from around f4. By f/5.6, it is extremely sharp.

Many people like this as a normal lens on APS-C cameras, but it's too long for me. For that purpose, I much prefer the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, which has much nicer bokeh than this lens.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

I'm an amateur living next door to the Adirondack State Park. Got my first Canon camera in 1967. Haven't had the lens very long but have enjoyed getting back to 35 mm shooting, whether in our back yard or in the country. I'm a slow learner as well, but this lens is very forgiving in combo with my Canon EOS T3. All it takes is patient practice sessions shooting closeups, then faraways, then in betweens, etc. at varied settings. I'll admit I'm still taking multiple shots of everything so I'll have plenty to work with in iPhoto, which by the way in its latest version(s) is invaluable to me. I still tend to overexpose too many shots, but with a little more experimenting I know that will get straightened out. I'm quite sure this will be my everyday lens because of its size and all around convenience.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

Having toured the Far East several times during the '60s armed with nothing but a Pentax 55mm Taukamar on first generation SLR, placing this lens on my Canon EOS 450 was like a return to the good old days when you really, really knew your lens. This lens on a Rebel is a great compact lightweight backup for a Mk5DII with L lenses, but you should not expect it to act like the premium equipment. On the full frame camera, it is a great light weight walk around lens, faster than most zooms with sharp accurate exposures. For some reason, 24 and 28mm seem to be the wide angle of choice but few of us shoot Ansel Adams landscapes with consumer equipment. A 35mm, with a 90mm or 135 in your pocket is all you need when just out discovering.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

This is a great replacement for the 18-55mm kit lens. I used this with an EOS 350D (Rebel XT) and the improvement in the image quality was amazing. When you stop down, it creates a nice bookeh and it is very useful in low light conditions. For me the size of the camera matters a lot and the small size of this lens was very advantageous in many cases, such as carrying or doing street photography where not many people are disturbed compared to using a large zoom lens. The build quality is quite good and it focuses pretty fast. The noise of the focusing motor that is mentioned in many places was not an issue at all for me. Overall, it is a great buy for the price and quality.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

I bought this lens because I wanted a fast wide angle prime but wasn't so keen on dropping the cash on Canon's L series 35.

If you don't mind the lack of USM or FTM focus you will make good use of this lens. Yes the AF isn't lighting fast in low light and yes you can hear it but it isn't nearly as big a deal some people make it out to be, it's easy enough to focus manually if needed.

Only real issue is it seems to require a higher than average amount of force to attatch, I'm always afraid of breaking it or the camera. Corners are slightly less sharp on a 1.6 crop body wide open but you won't notice it unless you're looking for it, would probably be worse on a full frame camera.

I also use this lens for video since I quite like the colour and contrast on it, no IS makes it a challenge though, but that would just make the lens cost more.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

This is a very handy lens. Small in size, but moderately fast. Great for inside shots at school, church or parties where you don't want to use a flash. Much faster than typical zoom kit lenses.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

This 35 works as a 50 on my 7d, and it looks great. The extra stops on this mid-range lens will come in handy for those who can't fork out the $ for the L version. The lens is sharp and the bokeh is fantastic. My only complaint is that the mount tolerances are sketchy on my lens. It requires much more torque to rotate the lens to its locked position on the camera body than do my other EF lenses.

I bought this lense to have a bit more forgiveness with focusing large groups of people and objects. While I am enjoying the lense, if found that it is not very fast .In very bright light, it's amazing and allows a much wider view then my 50mm 1.4 but it's still not nearly as sharp, fast and brilliant then the 50. I amShooting with a canon t3i , always manual focus.I was not about to soend1,200 bucks for the next step up since the 2.0 35mm was [$]

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

                          NARROW DEPTH OF FIELD

Canon primes have a razor thin DOF when the aperture is wide open. IMHO, this makes them almost unusable compared to Nikon primes which have a much more generous DOF. I like that this particular lens has a slightly more generous (deeper) DOF than others, but the DOF is still thin the way Canon seems to like it. Clearly, some people are into razor thin DOF. More power to them!

                          CRANK THE ISO

You also need to crank the ISO up into the 1000s to get decent photos of anything with motion in low light. Rumors (and patent trolling) indicate that an IS version of this lens is coming if you are prepared to pay for it.

                          NOISEY

This lens is also quite noisy - Bzzz! Zzzz!

                          BOKEH

If you like bokeh, this lens gives great bokeh. That's the trade-off. You couldn't have such awesome bokeh without a narrow DOF.

                          SHARP

Unlike the 50mm 1.4 I returned, this lens is actually capable of taking sharp photos.

OVERALL HAPPY WITH IT DESPITE IT ALL

I'm happy with it. It can't compare to my L-series lenses, but given that I don't like Canon primes and their narrow DOF - this is about the best that Canon can offer and I didn't have to spend tons of money for it. It's absolutely tiny compared to Canon's other lenses, reasonably priced, and has decent performance.

on my crop sensor this lens feels like my 50 on my AE-1. perfect for me. it's only come off my 60D twice in the last month leaving my 24-105L sitting lonely in my bag. must buy if you love street photography. yes it is noisy but not a deal breaker by any means. it makes up for it tenfold in performance.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/2.0 Autofocus Lens:

Purchased for indoor photography without flash. Previously, used the ubiquitous 50mm f/1.8 II, which while having astounding sharpness, proved to be incredibly unforgiving due to the narrow field of view on my APS-C body. I appreciate the metal mount, and the lens has a nice weight to it, unlike the cheap-feeling f/1.8. Coatings on this lens must be somewhat better than the f/1.8, as color rendition is noticeably better. The loss of 1/3 stop is more than made up by the wider field of view, making this lens far more forgiving in practice. The one downside for me is that this lens is quite noisy when focusing, and the manual focus feels somewhat rough.
