I bought this lens for the holidays to take pictures of our family and guests at each of our gatherings. I have a 50D and I take mostly sport shots. Indoor, non-moving targets are new to me. I have 3 kids that all play hockey and lacrosse so I have the 2.8 70-200 usm II and the 2.8 24-70 both L series and both incredible lenses. I didn't go for the 1.2L series because one of my friends is a professional wedding photographer and she knows people with both and found the difference slight. Please keep in mind when talking to my friend I was referring to non-professional use. It has done quite a nice job. I have been using it with a 580ex flash, so the pictures really do "pop". If you are in the market for a reliable, decent - indoor lens - I would recommend it. I have also taken some really nice sunset shots. The colors are very true. This lens is perfect for the price and the results. In this case - you may actually get a little more than you pay for...One thing - in low or filtered light, you better have a good flash, a tripod or a ridiculously steady hand - even at 1.4.

I mainly use this lens for weddings & portraits. The first thing I noticed was the green & magenta bokeh fringing. Green behind the plane of focus, magenta in front. I doubt that many clients would ever notice, but I certainly did. Also, this thing is NOT sharp at f/1.4. I had heard from several people that is was, but in my experience I have found that not to be true. If you stop it down to f/2.0 it is very sharp and tracks well using AI Servo. The focusing is decently fast unlike the 50mm f/1.8. If you can live without shooting your f/1.4 lens at f/1.4, then you will be pleased with this lens.

Having a Canon DSLR is great but it means nothing unless you have the right lens. This lens will take great pics outdoors and even better pics indoor. With the use of a flash and setting your f stop to a low value, you can get pics to come out bright and clear, even in a dark club scene.
Takes your photography to another level.

Use this for portraits and indoor low-light situations. I needed fast open lens for photographing the kids. Lightweight, sharp and nicer quality compared to 1.8. Worth every penny.

Very easy to use. Love the quality. I use it for general photos. I like macro stuff, but so far have just used it for some photographing some vintage items. Nice bokeh.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
I only give it 3 stars because it is very soft in F1.4. It is sharp enough at F2.0. Also I have noticed the green and magenta fringing when I performed focus test. The green behind the plain of focus and magenta in front. The focusing is decently fast. The lens shows a little bit front focusing and I am not sure what I need to do with it. I just got this lens for 3 days and I will do some research before making my decision.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
I just upgraded my gear from Canon t2i to 5D mark II. I used to have Canon 50mm 1.8 and I was really happy with the image quality. However the build quality was a joke and It was making me feel like it was going to fall apart in my hand one day. It was doing the job well , however It wasn't something that I could rely on in long term. I sold my t2i with the lens included.
After getting Canon 5D mark II, I needed a lens that that could give me great result in low light conditions as well as for the portrait work. As I said I was happy with 1.8's image quality but the build quality. after reading all the reviews that was saying that Canon 50mm 1.4 has better build and image quality, I decided to give a shot. This is the lens that I was looking for. Much better lens than 1.8.
Worth every penny... This lens is a must to have.

This lens is worth the couple hundred dollars extra over the f/1.8. It has the slightly larger appature which becomes quite sharp at f/2, a manual focus ring, feels solid with metal base. Most importantly it is great for indoor photography and gives great bokeh.

Great lens for portraits with very nice shallow depth of field. Very good for night photography as well.

This lens is a must have, works great on full frame camera. Had it on my 40D cropped sensor but I LOVE it even more on my full frame 5d Mark II. Crisp, great in low light situations and easy to carry all day. What more can you ask for!!

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
I've been using the F1.8 for over a year now and it's been great. But making short films with my 7D required a lens with a much bigger Focus ring. This one has just that. It's also much stronger built and the lens quality is great. F1.4 is hard to shoot at though, as the dept of field is so narrow! But it's definitely worth the extra cash if you can afford it.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
Just got the lens in from B&H. Ordered it by phone, service was excellent and shipping was quick. Very impressed with the lens so far. It is lightweight and fast. Impressed with its low light capabilities. Still getting used to the lens but it is pretty promising for portraits and childrens photography. Hope to use it for a little video work as well. Good value for the price...

Bought this lens recently, and so far it's been a great portrait lens (which is perfect for me, since I love taking pictures of friends & family.)
I agree with others who have pointed out that sharpness suffers quite a bit at f/1.4, but by f/2.0 it's all good. The bokeh is nice.
Will continue to experiment with this!

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
Using this lens for portraiture settings. The lens is solid and smooth. The focusing is superb and the tight control of the DoF allows for spotlighting of the subject. The bokeh is quite smooth and much better than other lenses such as the f/1.8. I plan to use this lens for a long time and can't imagine what the L version provides over and above the capabilities of this lens.
