I bought this lens for the holidays to take pictures of our family and guests at each of our gatherings. I have a 50D and I take mostly sport shots. Indoor, non-moving targets are new to me. I have 3 kids that all play hockey and lacrosse so I have the 2.8 70-200 usm II and the 2.8 24-70 both L series and both incredible lenses. I didn't go for the 1.2L series because one of my friends is a professional wedding photographer and she knows people with both and found the difference slight. Please keep in mind when talking to my friend I was referring to non-professional use. It has done quite a nice job. I have been using it with a 580ex flash, so the pictures really do "pop". If you are in the market for a reliable, decent - indoor lens - I would recommend it. I have also taken some really nice sunset shots. The colors are very true. This lens is perfect for the price and the results. In this case - you may actually get a little more than you pay for...One thing - in low or filtered light, you better have a good flash, a tripod or a ridiculously steady hand - even at 1.4.

I mainly use this lens for weddings & portraits. The first thing I noticed was the green & magenta bokeh fringing. Green behind the plane of focus, magenta in front. I doubt that many clients would ever notice, but I certainly did. Also, this thing is NOT sharp at f/1.4. I had heard from several people that is was, but in my experience I have found that not to be true. If you stop it down to f/2.0 it is very sharp and tracks well using AI Servo. The focusing is decently fast unlike the 50mm f/1.8. If you can live without shooting your f/1.4 lens at f/1.4, then you will be pleased with this lens.

I use this mostly for night photography without flash. The results have been wonderful. I considered purchasing the L series equivalent 50mm prime but not having $1500 this lens was the obvious choice. It performs just as I had hoped and the autofocus outperforms my other lenses.

This is one of standard prime lens that you can use for various condition. I would say this is good for portrait and general snap shoot. I recommend strongly.

Sharp pix in low light. That's a tall order and this lens will fulfill its mission. Great for indoor events photography and night sports (assuming the 50mm throw is reasonable). PRice well, too. Haven't used it for portraits, yet but the specs suggest it be terrif wide open with the background easily defocused.

I am a hobbyist and enjoy taking scenic and portrait shots. This lens is a must have for "pro-sumers" who understand the value of aperture size and the speed of USM, especially for portrait shots of children. The motor is ridiculously fast and getting that focus in an instant really helps with the kids. Plus everyone should have at least one prime lens, so if $$$ is an issue, the cheaper brother to this lens is the 50mm f/1.8, but it's not USM.
Additionally, for people who are starting to use DSLR cameras for HD Video Recording, a prime lens makes an excellent static (on a tripod, etc) video lens.

Everyone tells you to get the 1.8 but if you can save up a little more for the 1.4 please do. The build is way better and you don't feel like its going to fall apart. Focus is pretty fast and images are tack sharp at 2 stops above f1.4. I shoot a lot of night photography and video, but I could not justify the 1.2 L. Sure, the extra light will help a whole lot but I rather purchase this lens, the 85mm 1.8 and maybe pick up a wide angle before I even think about getting that 1.2L.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
Recently I transferred from Nikon to Canon DSLR. I used to like Nikon 50mm F/1.4D very much. It was very difficult to choose a right one among the 3 50mm lens (1.8, 1.4 and 1.2L). Of course 1.2L should be the best but the price is also unreachable for me at the moment. I don't like the design of the either. Therefore, I purchased this lens from Canon to take photos for my wife and friends. I have used it for about 2 weeks. Most photos look very nice, thankful to its excellent design and big aperture. Its bokeh is also very creamy compared to Nikon 50/1.4d (also likely due to the better imaging of Canon 5D Mark II vs. old Nikon D70). Autofocusing is fast and accurate unless it doesn't have IS so you have to hold it steadily in dim environment. It's also small and light, easy to travel. Now I have 16-35/F2.8L and 70-200 F/4L as well. I only bring 16-35 and this lens with me when traveling.

A great lens for all my indoor portrait taking needs. Lighter than the standard Lens that comes with the Canon kit (but still has a bit of weight because it is a solid lens). Great buy even with the duty I had to pay to Canada.

Super Sharp, Great Contrast and color. Works really well with our 60D. Much more functional and flexible indoors than the 85 1.8 (which is also a fantastic lens, just a bit long for shooting in smaller rooms) especially on a cropped frame sensor

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens:
I put this lens on my 7D and haven't found a reason to take it off yet. It is one of two lenses I own that do justice to it's 18MP sensor. The sharpness is amazing stopped down to f/2 and the focus accuracy has been great so far, even in exceptionally low light. At f/1.4, the images are definitely soft, but comparable to my zoom lenses (non-L, I blew all my money on the 7D).
If you have a crop body and find yourself trying to decide between the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8, just decide if you would like to do more than headshots with the lens. If yes, the 50mm f/1.4 is the best value I have seen. I also own the 85mm f/1.8, but I have found that the focal length is very limiting on a crop sensor for anything other than portrait work.
I think I'm supposed to complain about something, so I guess that would be the lack of internal focusing. I have kinda gotten used to that feature of the 85mm f/1.8, so I'll have to make sure not to put it up against the glass at the aquarium and try the AF.
All in all, this is a great lens if you don't mind zooming with your feet.

I have had this lens for the Canon 60D for a week or so now. I have used it a lot in low light without flash and everyone that has seen the pictures are amazed at how good they turned out without flash. A fast focusing lens also. I turned down the 60D with the kit lenses and bought this lens to start with, best decision I could have made. I have not found anything to say bad about this lens at all. I am very pleased with this product and the great service from B&H Photo
