I bought this mostly to use as a 50mm prime. I mostly use zoom lenses because of their more variable range and it has been cheaper to get zooms then replace tons of primes since I have gone from film to digital. I wanted to get a 50mm prime but I wanted something more rugged and better quality then the 50mm (nifty fifty) lens. I also didn't want to spend an arm and a leg for another 'L' glass so I went with this. The quality is wonderful. It is not an 'L' glass but it still feels nice. It is a good weight and is a fun lens to use. Unlike zooms, with a prime you need to be more creative with your framing and you need to actually move around to find a nice shot. The macro is not true 1:1 macro but I am a landscape shooter so this is not a big deal. I have had some fun playing around with the 'macro' feature and the photos it can produce have been amazing. With a set of extension tubes you can get even closer to the subject. There is a 1:1 converter you can use but this is a waste in my opinion because you will lose light and the cost of the lens and adapter combined is almost the same cost of the 100mm 1:1 macro from canon. So if you want a true 1:1 macro with a better auto focus then go with that. But for my purpose of wanting a 50mm prime and something to take close up photos this was a good investment.

The autofocus is noisy but who uses autofocus when doing macro? The manual focus ring feels sturdy but not as smooth as an 'L' lens. There is a little play with the manual focus ring, allowing you to wiggle it a little but i suspect if you treat your equipment right (I baby mine) this should not be a problem.

All in all, this is a good quality lens and I have been able to get professional quality results with mine in the short time I have owned it. I shot a sunset the other day with this and was able to get tack sharp detail on the contrast edges of black and red between sky and a grain silo. The individual struts holding a grain elevator up were nearly tack sharp and this was without the use of a tripod or monopod at f8... and the silo was over 3/4 of a mile away. So this lens packs a lot of punch for the price. For closeup work, bokeh is pretty good and although I don't shoot portraiture, I would imagine this lens would work well with these too.

Only negatives I have found are that the lens does have some rather bad chromatic aberration wide open on high contrast areas (like dark leaves and a bright sky). Of course this can easily be corrected in photoshop as long as the area it occurs is not the main focal point of your photo but this was a little disappointing, however I already knew about this issue before buying. This can be a problem with the landscapes I shoot but as long as I keep this problem in the back of my mind, I can either switch lenses or change my position so this is kept to a minimum. Unlike 'L' glass, this does not come with a lens hood but you do not need it. If you are like me and keep a UV on your lenses to protect your investment, just take it off for a few minutes when shooting in high sunlight and the recessed front element will be shaded by the 'built in' lens hood.

Overall I am very happy. This is a middle of the line lens - A step up from the nifty fifty and a step down from the 'L'.

This lens is good if are shooting anything with a tripod. Using this lens handheld I noticed it doesn't hold Its focus half the time. It also takes a while for it to find the focus. But I only have used it for close ups of objects like guitars and everyday items. If you're on a tripod it should be fine.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:

I´m a very active enthusiast and use this lens for products macro photography and the results are pretty decent! the quality of the optical parts became very visible when we recieve a sharp full frame image on our shoots. The lack of an image stabilizer is something that makes this lens not to be 5 stars.

The lens is awesome, but the focus ring is really long and make a louder than normal noise when focusing in video. other then that really nice, crisp clean focus, very detailed, great lens.

I did my first photo shoot with this lens in the studio. (I am a painter and I photograph my paintings.) It did a great job with no distoration, which is exactly why I needed this lens. I used the polarizer lens on half the shots and I liked the end result better than without the polarizer. I shot with natural light in the space but none direct on my piece. (I use a Canon 5D, Mark II.) I'm looking foward to experimenting with it!

The focus is fast and spot on even making a smooth transition to macro shots. I would buy this lens again and highly recommend it to others.

I used it in a wedding recently and I love the images. It's a bit on the noisy side so I didn't dare use it during a ceremony, but for actual macro shots before and after the ceremony it was great.
Its not a fast lens when it comes to focus, but the images are clear and allows for gorgeous natural light, and works fine with bounced lighting too.

I've been looking for a macro for a while now. Of course an affordable one. The common option is to get a used manual macro. Until now.
The lens looks nice, It's not heavy and the only issue perhaps is the slow focus. All do, when you're shooting so tight it must be hard for any lens to be ultra fast. The 1:1 size is fantastic and the 2.5 gives a beautiful blur.
I love the lens and would definitely recommend.

The best lens for video in my opinion, and does an outstanding job for photos. Takes in a lot of light, so any low light situation you're in, don't worry, just set your settings on your dslr to get the most out of this lens. I gave it 4 stars out of 5 because it doesn't have a stabilizer, but cancel the blur with a well bought flash and you shouldn't have any problems at all. For [$] get it, it's a steal for sure. Do your research if you aren't sure, and it gets SUPER close (MACRO) especially when you shoot in crop mode! It's unlike any other lens, even it's not top of the line, it's the most common lens anybody should always have for any situation.

I was looking for an amazing lens to take pictures of food for my blog. This is it! Previous to this one, I purchased the 100mm Macro. It's was great, but I had to stand 15 feet from the subject to get everything inside the frame. First: it's ridiculous. Second: I don't have that kind of space. So I bought this one. The image quality is the same, and I can stand closer to the dish. I would recommend it to any Food Photographer out there who wants to take amazing pictures. I find that the image quality is at its best when the light is difused.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:

This is a great all round lens which is extremely sharp with good color and resolving ability. It's only f2.5, but can achieve very nice bokeh and a shallow depth of field.
I was considering the Canon 1.2L, Zeiss 1.4 Planar & 2.0 Makro Planar... I read that this lens had great optical quality and I now believe that's true. For the price and if you don't need the speed, this is an excellent purchase.
Although I wasn't looking for macro capability, I find the close focusing distance very handy and a nice bonus.

I use this for product shots (especially food shots) and wedding details.

Compared to the 100mm macro, although the 50mm is the cheaper one but also I like being able to get closer to the subject. This lens is essential to every gig I do!

while not 1:1 focusing, works great to get those needed closeups of rings and such. Low aperture too. And really small and lightweight. Perfect macro lens for weddings.

This is an awesome lens. I was between this 2.5 Macro and the 1.8 50mm, but I really wanted the macro capabilities that the 1.8 lacked, and I'm extremely happy that I spent the extra $200. I use this lens for everything, from macro to portraits to landscape, on my rebel t1i. It truly makes my camera a whole new thing. I absoltutely love this lens. The one and only thing that I could possibly complain about is the slow (yet accurate) auto focus...

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:

I would consider myself an advanced amateur but a newbie in the world of macro, with that said, this lens is worth the money if what you want to do is experiment. You will quickly learn the pros and cons of using macro lenses for both macro and portraits.

Pros- Cheap, get some interesting pictures, it is a very fast lens and you will have fun experimenting.

Cons- The auto focus is the major downfall of this lens, I do not even use it and have been on manual since day one. The reason is is that other reviews say it is is noisy, they are not kidding, it could wake up a hybernating bear in winter and when you a very close to a subject it will not focus at all (though it tries and tries).

Besides the autofocus being very bad, I love this lens as it has brought me into a whole new world of snapping and has taught me to think differently about lighting and how to operate my camera.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:

If you want lenses for macro photos (or regular photos) and you're not willing to spend that much, these lenses are for you. Provides an excelent blurred background effect when shooting on really small distances (macro). Just keep in mind that its viewing angle is really narrow, so if you're going to use it for regular distance photos, you might need to back away a few steps in order to get the whole subject in the picture.
