I bought this mostly to use as a 50mm prime. I mostly use zoom lenses because of their more variable range and it has been cheaper to get zooms then replace tons of primes since I have gone from film to digital. I wanted to get a 50mm prime but I wanted something more rugged and better quality then the 50mm (nifty fifty) lens. I also didn't want to spend an arm and a leg for another 'L' glass so I went with this. The quality is wonderful. It is not an 'L' glass but it still feels nice. It is a good weight and is a fun lens to use. Unlike zooms, with a prime you need to be more creative with your framing and you need to actually move around to find a nice shot. The macro is not true 1:1 macro but I am a landscape shooter so this is not a big deal. I have had some fun playing around with the 'macro' feature and the photos it can produce have been amazing. With a set of extension tubes you can get even closer to the subject. There is a 1:1 converter you can use but this is a waste in my opinion because you will lose light and the cost of the lens and adapter combined is almost the same cost of the 100mm 1:1 macro from canon. So if you want a true 1:1 macro with a better auto focus then go with that. But for my purpose of wanting a 50mm prime and something to take close up photos this was a good investment.
The autofocus is noisy but who uses autofocus when doing macro? The manual focus ring feels sturdy but not as smooth as an 'L' lens. There is a little play with the manual focus ring, allowing you to wiggle it a little but i suspect if you treat your equipment right (I baby mine) this should not be a problem.
All in all, this is a good quality lens and I have been able to get professional quality results with mine in the short time I have owned it. I shot a sunset the other day with this and was able to get tack sharp detail on the contrast edges of black and red between sky and a grain silo. The individual struts holding a grain elevator up were nearly tack sharp and this was without the use of a tripod or monopod at f8... and the silo was over 3/4 of a mile away. So this lens packs a lot of punch for the price. For closeup work, bokeh is pretty good and although I don't shoot portraiture, I would imagine this lens would work well with these too.
Only negatives I have found are that the lens does have some rather bad chromatic aberration wide open on high contrast areas (like dark leaves and a bright sky). Of course this can easily be corrected in photoshop as long as the area it occurs is not the main focal point of your photo but this was a little disappointing, however I already knew about this issue before buying. This can be a problem with the landscapes I shoot but as long as I keep this problem in the back of my mind, I can either switch lenses or change my position so this is kept to a minimum. Unlike 'L' glass, this does not come with a lens hood but you do not need it. If you are like me and keep a UV on your lenses to protect your investment, just take it off for a few minutes when shooting in high sunlight and the recessed front element will be shaded by the 'built in' lens hood.
Overall I am very happy. This is a middle of the line lens - A step up from the nifty fifty and a step down from the 'L'.

This lens is good if are shooting anything with a tripod. Using this lens handheld I noticed it doesn't hold Its focus half the time. It also takes a while for it to find the focus. But I only have used it for close ups of objects like guitars and everyday items. If you're on a tripod it should be fine.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
I have wanted a Macro lens for awhile -but not ready to lay down the $$$ for the 100L - since I use a FullFrame camera the 60mm won't work as it's an ef-s lens. I found this little guy, read reviews and looked at sample images on Flickr and decided this was the one for me until I was ready for the 100L. I LOVE THIS LENS. It lets me actually get wonderful Ring-shots (I'm a wedding photographer) and does a magnificent job. I don't know why more people don't use this thing!

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
I have to say I'm pretty impressed with this lens. I figured it would be a good starting point to macro lenses because I wasn't sure that I was going to enjoy it or use it often as I'm slowly phasing out weddings.
I recently went to Florida for a week. The lens never left my camera. It's versatility from macro to normal 50mm was great to have.
I'll admit it is kinda a pain to get on and off my camera as it is a super tight fit. The first time I put it on it stressed me out by the force it took.
The auto focus is LOUD!!! It is also decently slow. I'm not sure how well it will work with a newborn sound wise, I'm planning on trying it soon enough, but it has been pretty spot on focus wise thus far.
For the price, I'd buy it again. Great lens for a new macro user. I just wish it had full time manual.

I'm new in macro-photography and I wanted something good without paying too much. I quite happy with what I have. This lens does take great pictures in macro.
but: the autofocus is not as performing as I was expecting, and is really noisy. Anyway, in macro, you better off with manual focus.
it's quite heavy, but you can see it is well build compare to the lens that was coming with my camera.

I got this to use a portriat lens and macro. The macro is ok but its not 1-1. If you only use macro a very little this perfect.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
I'm not a pro but am a serious amateur with over 50 years of photography under my belt. I needed a smaller lens for close up work and this baby served the bill. It provides crisp results and has outstanding macro range down to just over 7". This small lens also allows my use of a bellows I got recently. My 50mm F1.2 L is too large for it and this one fits fine. I may leave this on the 5D II more often such as when I need to carry it all day. It weighs a small fraction of the 24-70 F2.8 I have on for normal use when size and weight are no factor. My other 3 lenses are all L series but I decided to give the normal series lens a try and I'm not disappointed. I haven't had this one long enough to rate its durability or construction which is where the L series are supposed to excel. I gave it 4 stars because I am making the assumption that it's not quite up to the quality of an L series. The Bokeh is excellent and the focus is quick and sharp even is very limited light which was a pleasant surprise out of an F2.5.

This lens is really great. The sharpness is great and I am able to get extremely close up shots as well as great portraits. Even though it does not open as wide as my 50mm 1.8 lens I think this may be my new old faithful.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
After weeks of research I decided to settle on this lens, it was noted to have good bokeh, and to be very sharp wide open. But, the focusing system puts a burden on the lens. First of all, it's noisy, noisier than the kit lens, so any insects I would try to photograph I would have to use manual. It's fine if it's at regular distances. There is also no full time manual focus but manual focus is precise. This only has a 1:2 macro ratio, good for beginners going into the world of macro but there are better macro lenses out there for serious use. This is also a great normal 50mm lens, although not as fast, it still can be used indoors with high ISOs. I couldn't live with the super noisy AF so i decided to return it to get the 50mm F1.4 and maybe a true macro lens in the future.

It took some getting used to not being able to use the manual focus ring at all when having autofocus on, but auto focus is generally sharp and quick, although very noisy as other reviewers have mentioned.

Can't say anything bad about this so far. It's our first macro lens and we've been having a ball with it. The pictures are awesome. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to buy a macro lens and take some really cool close up shots.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
We actually had the same lens in our studio before, but being over 8 years old and dropped a few times, we figured it'd be good to buy a new one. The only difference between our new EF 50mm and our old one is the previous lens had image-stabilization. However, even without, it's wonderful. I don't think I'm too concerned about not having image-stabilization with this lens, mainly bc we use a tripod and remote 98% of the time.
I think the fact that the same lens has been around for over 8 years is a good review of itself. I can speak for our previous lens. Being that old, and dropped a few times, and STILL working like a champ? Sounds like a quality lens to me.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens:
I usually have this on my old 5D and it has taken quite a beating. Extremely durable, medium weight lens that is very versatile.
While not the fastest lens in my bag, it is the most used one I have when I'm walking around town.
Also a decent portrait lens to boot.
Does have a bit of CA wide open and is slow to AF, but all that is moot because of it's overall sharpness.
Highly recommended.
